Canadian Diana Krall also returns to the show, for the first time since the nineties, with a number or two from her acclaimed samba-inflected Quiet Nights album, inspired by a trip to Brazil.

Wild Beasts come down from the Lake District as one of the most talked about bands in the country thanks to their highly acclaimed second album Two Dancers.

Plus there is Northumbrian moody folk courtesy of the Unthanks, comprising the vocal harmonies of Rachel Unthank and sister Becky, plus an eight-piece supporting cast of strings, drums, brass, guitar and piano. They play tunes from their much acclaimed album Here's The Tender Coming.

Also in the studio to perform a few of their gems are the Foo Fighters, who are about to celebrate their career so far with a greatest hits album. Norah Jones returns to showcase numbers from her new album the Fall, and, fresh from being a Policeman again, Sting plays a song from his new album If On a Winter's Night.

At the other end of the scale sales-wise, but just as essential to the show's mix, Oxford's unsigned indie-folk faves Stornoway are making their Later... debut after enchanting all who saw them on BBC's Glastonbury coverage, and a unique talent from Montreal, Erik Mongrain, displays his distinctive lap-tapping technique. Jools also chats with legendary drummer Ginger Baker about his new autobiography Hellraiser.

Joining Jools on the music show are Seattle's Alice in Chains, who first came to attention in 1993 with their breakthrough album Dirt, and recently released their comeback album Black Gives Way to Blue.

Best known as a film star and producer of funny films, as well as a stand-up comedian, Steve Martin is also a highly accomplished banjo player who has performed with Earl Scruggs and Dolly Parton, and whose first album, The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo, was released to acclaim earlier in 2009.

Ahead of a couple of rare live shows in the UK, the legendary Rickie Lee Jones is also in the studio, and Devon soul sensation Joss Stone performs tracks from her new album Colour Me Free.

Hotly tipped Manchester three-piece Delphic make their television debut on the show before they head off and try to make 2010 theirs. From Austin, Texas, Black Joe Lewis, who caused a sensation at the SXSW festival playing seven shows, perform a song or two from their album Tell 'Em What Your Name Is.

Jools's guests include David Gray, who is back in the studio to perform his duet with Annie Lennox, entitled Full Steam, from his recent Draw The Line album.

Portland, Oregon's The Decemberists are also in the studio, performing songs from their acclaimed album The Hazards Of Love. Inspired by the British folk revival in the mid-60s, it tells of a woman, her shape-shifting lover, his forest queen mother and a rake.

Making a welcome return to the show is Corinne Bailey Rae, who is performing a couple of acoustic exclusives ahead of the release of her second album in 2010.

Plus The Big Pink, who deal in a fuzzy electro rock blend and released their debut album A Brief History Of Love to much acclaim recently, are making their show debut, as is South London's Rox, whose pop/soul stylings have won her an array of admirers, and will no doubt gather more with the release of her debut album in 2010.

Plus, Free/Bad Company and latterly Queen legend Paul Rodgers pops in for a chat about his incredible career.

Seattle-based Band of Horses make a welcome return to the studio to showcase numbers from their new album Infinite Arms. Jerry Dammers and his Spatial AKA Orchestra plus a host of guests embrace the spirit of the legendary Sun Ra along with all manner of far out sounds, and make their TV debut playing a Sun Ra number as well as their unique take on Ghost Town.

Also returning after making his TV debut on the show is Plan B, who performs songs from his new acclaimed album The Defamation of Strickland Banks. Pennsylvania's Melody Gardot returns to the show to perform tracks from her My One And Only Thrill album; and Cream's legendary Jack Bruce is on hand to chat about being in Cream and his rock and roll life in general.

London-based Klaxons, who made their TV debut on Later in 2007, perform songs from their new album Surfing the Void. The legendary Herb Alpert, whose career spans 50 years as multi-million selling musician, producer and co-founder of A&M Records, is in the studio to discuss his career. Having helped out many a Later favourite with their albums, producer/man about town Mark Ronson and his band the Business International play a couple of tunes from his upcoming Record Collection set, joined by a couple of special guest vocalists.

Also in the studio, originally from Houston, Texas and now living in California, Queen Emily - who knew she would be a singer from the age of six, and at the age of forty achieved a top-five place on America's Got Talent and subsequently a record deal with Tommy Couch's soul label Malaco.
