The hype surrounding Arctic Monkeys' 2006 debut album was so monstrous it threatened to swallow the band and its music whole. And a lesser band might have been swallowed, but it should be clear by now that Arctic Monkeys weren't undone by a little media frenzy. It's no surprise: They're a skilled band that writes complex songs filled with unexpected musical turns, wit, and observational acumen. They have a level of musicianship that hasn't been fashionable since the 70s, but they employ it in a modern way, and everyone I've heard doubt the group changed their mind when I played them one of their records.

Humbug, the band's third album, breaks ground in a few directions for the Arctics. It's their loosest record yet by far, following on the heels of the hyperaggressive Favourite Worst Nightmare, which at times was wound so tight it felt like it might collapse from a heart attack on the next chord change. Part of this looseness can be credited to producer Josh Homme, who brings out the darkness that often underlies Alex Turner's songwriting. The guitars in particular have a snapping, reverberant desert/surf tone that fuels the band's descent into night. It's an interesting look for them, and one that undeniably sounds much better on the third or fourth listen than the first. This perhaps reflects that the Arctics, having established and subsequently defended their place in the UK pop firmament, can now afford to make a record that grows on you rather than walloping you in the face repeatedly.

First single "Crying Lightning" is among the record's loudest, most aggressive tracks. Alex Turner's Yorkshire accent and penchant for detailed writing-- he catalogs the sweets the "you" in the song ingests almost obsessively (pecan mix, strawberry lace, gobstoppers, and ice cream) and the song rides its overdriven bass line to a theatrical horror guitar build-up. The song's heavy hand is oddly off-putting and engaging at the same time. As an antidote, they'd do well to release "Cornerstone" as the follow-up single. The album's highlight, the song is beyond lovelorn, with Turner delivering a swooning, dreamy vocal, possibly his best to date. He makes a somewhat hokey premise-- a guy who keeps approaching women who look like his ex-girlfriend, only to strike out when he asks if he can call them by her name-- actually work through clever turns of phrase and his usual flair with detail.

That song feels like a legitimate expansion of the band's songwriting arsenal, but their usual territory offers its share of good stuff as well. Matt Helders' drumming on the frenzied riff-fest "Dangerous Animals" is jaw-dropping, and it's one of things that saves the song from its spelled-out vocal hook. "Potion Approaching" threatens to turn into a cover of Nirvana's "Very Ape" on its opening riff, but the band instead opts for Zeppelin-ish start-stop passages that read like "Achilles' Last Stand" recast as a Britpop tune before it shifts completely into a seesawing, mildly psychedelic mid-section.

Their riffier tendencies can get the best of them, as on "Pretty Visitors", a progged-out song that gets lost in heavy metal thunder, choral vocals (not an actual choir, but the band built up into one), and creepy organ interludes. The balance between songwriting and excess seems to hold across all three of their albums, though, and it's never undone them yet. Humbug isn't better than either of its predecessors, but it expands the group's range and makes me curious where it might go next. It also demonstrates a great deal of staying power for a band that could have imploded before it ever got this far.

You do wonder whether, in their treehouse, the Arctic Monkeys haven’t got a copy of the lyrics to ‘Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?’ pasted to the wall, with the important bits circled. Never were truer words spoken in drawl: “Stick to the guns. Don’t care if it’s marketing suicide…”
So, as they Montgolfier off on the magical balloon ride that is ‘Humbug’, over the side they chuck about half of the fanbase who filled Old Trafford like so many sandbags. Goodbye proper-tunes people! This is not for you.

It’s not unexpected. What could a band with such a massive fanbase possibly want in life? A smaller, more discerning fanbase, of course. Seasoned Monkeys-watchers have been waiting for their balls to fully descend for a while now, and these songs are pretty much what you’d expect if you put a bunch of gaga QOTSA fanboys in a room with their idol – a grinding peyote-trip of desert rock. And, like any good peyote trip, ‘Humbug’ can often feel sticky, claustrophobic, like your heart is going to explode and about a week long. Which isn’t to say it’s not often brilliant. Just that ‘Humbug’ extends ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’’s trend for being squat and muscular right up to the border of brutishness.

They’ve always had a clever way of retooling rock clichés – their songs seldom start or
end where they were supposed to. On ‘Humbug’, generally, when the words run out, the song ends – as if they’re now so no-compromise that proper segues would just be pandering. Structures are topsy-turvy, often intriguingly. It takes a few listens to figure out just why ‘Secret Door’ feels so unsettled before noticing that the sequence is chorus, verse, bridge, verse, bridge, chorus, chorus. For all its righteous fury, there are moments when they don’t find that extra gear, and the trade-off between texture and songwriting unbalances in their haste to zag away into the future.
Band album it may be, but only the snarling cipher of Alex Turner can ever truly star in this show. Over ‘My Propeller’’s uncoiling high-wire riff, his opening line falls light as a feather. “If you can summon the strength”, then a pause – an elegant, brilliantly theatrical, pause, “tell me”. If Miles Davis is all about the ‘spaces in between the notes’, then Turner is now mastering the spaces between the words. His delivery has become super-sentient; the twists and turns of his lips are immaculate.

Underwhelming when it first landed, repetition allows ‘Crying Lightning’/b]’s knotty chorus to finally twine itself around the mind. The heavier-than-hell ‘Potion Approaching’ gives way to the grind of ‘Fire And The Thud’ and ‘Dance Little Liar’, the sweaty torpor only lifting for the Ford-produced standout ‘Cornerstone’ before the sonic heat finds its apex in the nonsense-poetry strafe attack of ‘Pretty Visitors’.

Here is the wake-up call for everyone who assumed in 2006 that Alex Turner was some sort of People’s Poet. He’s a poet alright, but rather than pour himself into his art like a latter-day Morrissey, he seems to have spent the intervening years stepping away from himself. So the first-personal vignettes of jackpots-from-fruit machines that made way for the third-person observations of sex-starved housewives have in turn been shunted aside for a perspective so loose its practically cubist. “We embellished the banks of our bloodstreams, and threw caution to the colourful”. Que? ‘Humbug’ confirms his genius, but in a way that’s often more abstract than moving. In the world’s oldest critical get-out clause, it’s a grower. One for the fans. Brave. Challenging. And all the other clichés that suggest that the Monkeys have reached the point where the people who love them a lot will clutch them even closer to their hearts, and the people who kinda liked ’em will be wondering who the fuck they are in five years’ time.

If ‘My Propeller’ was the foreboding opening overture, then ‘The Jeweller’s Hand’ is its fellow bookend. The trip is over. But rather than the veil of madness lifting, we follow the piper’s tune over the hills into Mad Land. “A procession of pioneers” proffers Turner, pausing again mid-sentence with priestly authority as the ground gives way beneath us, “all drowned”. Well, of course they did, you cynical bastards. No-one gets out alive in the Arctics’ world. They’re fatalistic, smirking sceptics who’ll never, ever take the soft option. They’re exactly the sort of rock’n’roll band you shouldn’t put your life in the hands of. And that’s exactly why you should love them even more.

Termen als ‘veelbelovend’ en ‘talent’ kun je anno 2009 eigenlijk niet meer op Alex Turner loslaten. Na met z’n Arctic Monkeys zowel in 2006 als in 2007 de Plaat van het Jaar te hebben afgeleverd (althans, volgens een gezonde hoeveelheid critici en popliefhebbers) en zelfs van een ‘tussendoortje’ als The Last Shadow Puppets (2008) iets ontzagwekkends te hebben gemaakt, mag de pas 23-jarige zanger/gitarist/songschrijver gerust gelden als – en u mag me citeren – het grootste muzikale genie dat het Groot-Brittannië van de 21ste eeuw tot dusver heeft voortgebracht. Om maar meteen terzake te komen: Humbug verandert daar niets aan. En het is maar de vraag in hoeverre de inbreng van Queens Of The Stone Age-voorman Josh Homme, onder wiens productionele leiding het grootste deel van de plaat werd opgenomen, daar iets mee te maken heeft gehad.
Ik vermoed dat ie weinig grip had op de eigenzinnige Turner en zijn maten. De aanvankelijk verwachte en zelfs aangekondigde ‘hard rockende plaat vol stoner- en Black Sabbath-invloeden’ is Humbug dan ook niet geworden. De nadruk ligt zelfs meer op bas, drums en toetsen (!) dan op gitaren. Nee, áls Homme al iets van z’n habitat (de Californische woestijn) in de plaat heeft kunnen leggen, moet je dat zoeken in hogere sferen: psychedelica, surrealisme en andere zinsbegoocheling. In muzikale zin vertaalt zich dat keurig op z’n Arctic Monkeys. De heren keken op hun twee eerdere albums al niet op een schijnbeweginkje meer of minder en ook Humbug volgt die lijn: de drumpatronen van de woest om zich heen slaande Matt Helders gaan zelden recht vooruit, songs maken de merkwaardigste U-turns (let op de zwierige Bowie-pastiche aan begin én eind van Secret Door of de geestige glamrockgedaante die het lekker staccato hakkende Potion Approaching uiteindelijk aanneemt!) en het wemelt van de onverwachte breaks, stops, orgeltjes en koortjes. Nee, aan ideeën en variatie andermaal geen gebrek. Ook liet Turners Last Shadow Puppets-flirt met pseudo-kitscherige sixtiespop hier en daar sporen na: Cornerstone en Dance Little Liar, tezamen een welkom rustpunt halverwege het album, zijn nog nét niet cheesy. Daarna gaat ‘t overigens meteen de achtbaan in, met wat we gerust de meest opwindende botsing van deeltjes en impulsen in de nog jonge Arctic Monkeys-historie mogen noemen: Pretty Visitors. Progrock? Psychedelica? Mini-rockopera? Jeugdige onbezonnenheid? Horen is geloven. En ja, dat geldt eigenlijk voor de hele plaat, die qua impact, potentie en – ach, waarom niet – langdurige amusementswaarde (want hier kom je de maanden tot de eindejaarslijstjes wel mee door) nergens onderdoet voor z’n twee voorgangers. Moeten we ‘t nog hebben over de poëet in Alex Turner? Dat scherpzinnige, welbespraakte en nu al met de Ironie Der Groten (van Davies tot Morrissey tot Cocker tot Albarn) gezegende kereltje dat op Humbug met veel flair en humor vorm geeft aan z’n langzaam scherper wordende blik op én begrip van all things human? ‘My propeller won’t spin and I can’t get it started on my own,’ zingt hij nog plagerig in opener My Propeller. Zondag houden de Arctic Monkeys op Lowlands 'Humbug' ten doop, het derde studioalbum sinds 2006, waarop de band uit Sheffield voor het eerst een echte koerswijziging doorvoert in geluid en songstructuren.
Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age) produceerde de meeste songs en hoewel de groep rond Alex Turner beslist geen stonerrockband is geworden, is het geluid wel heavier en donkerder geworden: meer rock, minder pop. De jonge Engelsen tonen zich in interviews plots fans van Queens Of The Stone Age, Jimi Hendrix en Cream.

Maar de opvallendste verandering is toch wel het feit dat de liedjesband een albumband geworden is. Dat veroorzaakt gemengde gevoelens. Hoewel 'Humbug' een geslaagd, coherent geheel is, er goede songs te over zijn en de groep erin is geslaagd zich te vernieuwen zonder zichzelf te verloochenen, ontbreken singles van het kaliber 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' en hebben spontaniteit en puntigheid over de hele linie plaatsgemaakt voor bedachtzaamheid.

Zo dienen zich bij 'Humbug' toch meer bedenkingen aan dan bij de twee voorgangers. De band móest deze stap zetten, maar 'Humbug' zou wel eens een overgangsplaat kunnen blijken: een veelbelovend, maar nog wat aarzelend begin van een nieuwe fase.

Wat een geweldig optreden op Lowlands! Stond in het linkervoorvak, redelijk vooraan, maar ben na de helft naar achter gegaan omdat ik amper kon ademhalen tussen al die irritant duwende mensen. Niks mis met springen maar mensen tegen de hekken plat duwen is niet cool.

Wat ik bij AM zag, was een echte band. Alex praatte meer dan normaal, was meer een frontman dan vroeger. De muziek is nu echt beter, nummers die langer doorgaan, anders gespeeld worden (overigens niet leuk voor het springpubliek).

Bij 505 dacht ik echt: "Hier staat 1 's werelds beste bands te spelen!

The UK rockers recorded their third LP at Joshua Tree in California, where they also posed for the photo that appears on the artwork.

"We were heavily involved in the album artwork this time." Drummer Matt Helders told The Sun. "It's a bold thing to be on the front of our album, even though we are still slightly disguised."

"It's a photo I took with a dollar camera. I bought a camera for a dollar while we were in Joshua Tree in the Californian desert. There were film students selling all this stuff off at ridiculously low prices."

Explaining why Arctic Monkeys decided to show their faces on the album (it's the first time all 4 members have appeared), frontman Alex Turner added: "We're on the cover because it feels like the album is more ours somehow."
