Waar is Kei Nishikori eigenlijk gebleven?

Querrey Clinches US Open Series; Meets Davydenko In QF

New Haven, U.S.A.

American Sam Querrey capped a stellar summer by clinching the Olympus US Open Series with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Bjorn Phau at Pilot Pen Tennis Thursday. The straight-sets win at the ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament in New Haven saw the sixth-seeded Querrey advance to his seventh quarter-final of the season.

The 21-year-old Querrey will now enter the US Open competing for up to an additional $1 million in Bonus Prize Money. The Californian has been one of the standout players during the six-week Olympus US Open Series, reaching the final at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships (l. to Ginepri) before capturing his second ATP World Tour title at the LA Tennis Open with victory over Carsten Ball. Last week at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters, Querrey knocked out World No. 5 Andy Roddick in the second round before falling to Lleyton Hewitt.

In Wednesday’s 64-minute win over Phau, Querrey fired 14 aces and won 88 per cent of points behind his first serve, while crucially converting all three break points he created. The right-hander, currently a career-high No. 23 in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings, is through to the New Haven quarter-finals for the first time and will look to even up a 0-1 head-to-head standing with Nikolay Davydenko in his next match.

Niks presteren?

Hyung-Taik Lee To Retire In October

Former World No. 36 Hyung-Taik Lee, who is Korea’s highest-ever ranked player, will retire from professional tennis in October.

The 33-year-old Lee is already looking to inspire the next generation of children by opening the “Hyung-Taik Lee Academy” in the Gangwon Province on 12 September.

“I want to pour all my effort into bringing up young talented tennis players,” said Lee, to the Korea Times. “I am very proud of starting my academy in my hometown. While I moved around the world on the tour, I really felt that Koreans could be world class tennis players. My goal is train players who can make it into the Top 100.”

In January 2003 he became the first Korean to capture an ATP singles title at the Medibank International in Sydney, where he qualified and beat Juan Carlos Ferrero 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 in the final. Two months later he clinched his only ATP doubles trophy at the SAP Open in San Jose (w/Voltchkov).

His best performances at a Grand Slam came at the US Open, where he reached the fourth round in 2000 (l. to Sampras) and 2007 (l. to Davydenko). His best showing at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments came at 2003 Miami (l. to Ginepri) and 2008 Indian Wells (l. to Wawrinka), when he made fourth round exits.

Lee made his Davis Cup debut in February 1995 and amassed a 51-23 overall record in 30 ties (41-9 in singles). In beating the Slovak Republic in September 2007, Lee led Korea back to the World Group for the first time in 20 years.

He has compiled a 161-164 singles record and a doubles ranking-high of No. 95 (16 January 2006) with a 40-71 record. He has won $2,350,372 in prize money.

CEO: Event meant to create tennis buzz

NEW YORK -- Andy Roddick vs. Roger Federer in a serving speed contest? How about Rafael Nadal vs. Andy Murray in a timed race to chase down drop shots?

Those are the kind of matchups that could be featured at an All-Star showcase the head of the men's tennis tour is introducing next year as part of his efforts to help boost the sport's popularity.

"We're looking at it as a way to extend our reach, to reach more casual sports fans and tennis fans," Adam Helfant told The Associated Press on Tuesday in his first one-on-one interview since becoming the ATP's chief executive in January.

"It seems to work in other sports. We'll see if it works here. Our players think it will work."

The idea is to have a one- or two-day event in March, during the week before the hard-court tournament in Indian Wells, Calif., including a skills competition, pro-am celebrity doubles matches and an awards show. There have been preliminary talks about a TV deal.

Not interested in making any immediate changes to the game itself -- no on-court coaching, the way the WTA tour allows, for example -- Helfant is more concerned at the moment with off-court promotion and marketing.

He would, for example, like to generate more buzz at the beginning of the season, saying that's something other sports manage to do better than tennis. He's not sure whether anything can be put in place by the start of 2010, but he wants fans paying more attention in the days leading to the Australian Open each January.

Helfant, who grew up in New York, has an engineering degree from MIT and a law degree from Harvard. He worked for the NHL and in global marketing for Nike -- getting to know tennis players such as Federer and Maria Sharapova while negotiating their endorsement contracts -- before being hired by the ATP.

Touching on various topics, Helfant said he does not consider doping or match-fixing a "significant problem" for tennis. He also noted there are "some very serious conversations with a number of interested parties" that could result in a long-term deal with a new major sponsor beginning in 2010.

Mercedes-Benz ended its sponsorship of the ATP tour when its contract expired in 2008. The carmaker had been one of the tour's main global sponsors since 1996.

"We understand that we have a hole in terms of not having a tour-wide sponsor," Helfant said. "We have not replaced Mercedes yet. At the beginning of the year, it was very difficult to even get meetings. Companies and industries are hurting, and the tour isn't immune to that."

Nadal pulls out of Thailand Open

BANGKOK (AP)—Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the Thailand Open due to an injury sustained at the U.S. Open earlier this month.

Nadal was advised by his doctor to withdraw from the Sept. 26-Oct. 4 tournament to recover from a stomach muscle problem, Suwat Liptapanlop, president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand, said Monday.

Nadal lost his U.S. Open semifinal in straight sets to Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro, who went on to capture his first Grand Slam title with an upset victory over top-ranked Roger Federer in the final.

Nadal was forced to skip a title defense at Wimbledon due to sore knees that kept him off tour for all of June and July.
