quote:Positive news about Massa
Jul.26 (GMM) Felipe Massa will remain in induced coma for two more days but the result of his brain scan on Sunday was "reassuring", the medical director of the AEK hospital in central Budapest said.
"It (the CT scan) brought the result we had expected concerning an injury of this type," Peter Gaszo said.
He revealed that the 28-year-old Brazilian, who underwent emergency surgery after sustaining skull damage and brain contusion in a qualifying incident on Saturday, was woken for a short time on Sunday.
Massa responded to his family, including his father, brother and wife who are at his bedside, and then sedated again, reportedly as standard procedure with head injuries of this type.
Baszo said the coma will continue until Tuesday.
"I think he's okay," F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone, who visited Massa in hospital on Saturday and again on Sunday morning, said today in the Hungaroring paddock.
"Everybody seemed quite happy with him this morning. The hospital is happy, which is more important."

Renault has been suspended from the European Grand Prix for the events that led to a wheel coming off Fernando Alonso's car in Hungary today.
Following a post-race discussion with the stewards, it was deemed that the team had breached the regulations enough for it to be suspended from the next event.
It means Alonso will miss his home event that takes place in Valencia next month, unless he moves to another team.
Alonso had been leading the race up until his stop, but his efforts came to nothing after his right front wheel was not fitted properly. It worked its way loose and flew off the car later that lap, ending up against the crash barriers.
A statement issued by the stewards on Sunday night said that there had been multiple breaches of the regulations by the Renault team.
Stewards talked to Renault representatives twice after the race.
The statement said that Renault "knowingly released car no. 7 from the pitstop position without one of the retaining devices for the wheel-nuts being securely in position, this being an indication that the wheel itself may not have been properly secured."
It added that Renault, "being aware of this, failed to take any action to prevent the car from leaving the pitlane....failed to inform the driver of this problem or to advise him to take appropriate action given the circumstances, even though the driver contacted the team by radio believing he had a puncture."
It said that the team's actions had compromised safety in breach of Article 3.2 of the Sporting Regulations, and in breach of Article 23.1.i had released the car from the pits before it was safe to do so.
Renault has been reminded of its right to appeal the decision.

quote:Motorsport: Massa remains in life-threatening state
8:56AM Monday Jul 27, 2009
BUDAPEST - Ferrari driver Felipe Massa remained in "life-threatening" but stable condition today despite "reassuring" results of his surgery on multiple skull fractures, a doctor said.
Peter Bazso, the AEK hospital medical director, told reporters that Massa would remain sedated until tomorrow, but will be woken up periodically during that time.
When asked whether Massa's life remained in danger, Bazso answered: "Yes, of course."
Bazso said doctors were able to "remove the broken bones and stabilise the area," which was necessary since Massa arrived with "an open skull fracture and a contusion."
He did not specify how long it would take Massa to recover, or whether there would be any long-term effects of the injury.
"At the moment, we have to overcome this life-threatening condition," Bazso said, adding that a CT scan revealed "expected results after an operation of this type."
Massa's parents and wife arrived after flying in from Brazil, and doctors woke Massa temporarily to check on his condition and so that he could see his family.
Team principal Stefano Domenicali and several Ferrari staff were also on hand to support Massa's family, which included pregnant wife Anna Rafaela.
Fellow Brazilian driver Rubens Barrichello was buoyed by the news he received from a doctor at the hospital when he visited after the Hungarian Grand Prix, although he didn't personally see Massa.
"For me I can leave it in peace because he's going to be fine," Barrichello said. "The improvements from yesterday were quite good and that most probably he's going to be OK."
At the Hungaroring circuit, Ferrari's garage displayed a banner reading "Forza Felipe Siamo Con Te" - or "Be Strong Felipe, We Are With You.".
"Yesterday was a quite sad day to not see Felipe with us today," said race winner Lewis Hamilton, who beat Massa by a single point in the 2008 championship following a battle that stretched to the final corner of the final lap of the season. "We miss him and wish him well and wish him a speedy recovery."
The spring from Barrichello's Brawn GP car bounced into Massa's helmet as the 28-year-old driver reached speeds of about 190kph. The impact concussed Massa, who then plowed into the protective tire barrier.
"That's the job we do. We don't want to get too carried away with it," Red Bull's Mark Webber said. "He'll be fine. We missed him on the grid but the show must go on."
The impact of the rear suspension part, believed to be made of steel, damaged the left side of Massa's helmet, ripping out the visor and leaving a long dent on its side. Blood was visible on Massa's left brow.
Barrichello said the incident weighed on his mind during the race.
"I would be lying if in the middle of the race it didn't sometimes come to my mind. It's a friend," he said. "Not because the spring came from my car - it could have come from any car so I'm not actually (blaming) myself for that."
The crash came less than a week after Henry Surtees, the son of former F1 champion John Surtees, died in similar circumstances in an F2 race last Sunday. Surtees was struck in the head by a tire from another car, causing him to lose consciousness and drive into a barrier.
Governing body FIA was expected to launch an investigation into the crash after several drivers and team principals called for safety measures to be re-examined.
"It was very unfortunate what happened. (But) we have phenomenal safety in Formula One," Webber said. "Yesterday was terrifically freakish."
No F1 driver has died on the track since three-time champion and fellow Brazilian Ayrton Senna's crash at Imola 15 years ago.

quote:"He's woken up (from sedation) more and more often now and he's able to communicate actively – that is, he reacts when he's talked to," said Bocskai.
"We are optimistic. In our hope a slow recovery is beginning."
Bocskai said Massa could move his hands and legs, signs that his brain probably suffered no particular damage, but doctors were not at the stage where they could be totally sure of that.

quote:Valencia tells FIA to think of the fans
European Grand Prix organiser Valmor Sport has called on the FIA to think about the Spanish fans after the Renault team was suspended from the Valencia race.
The French squad will not be able to race in Spain in three weeks time after the Hungarian GP stewards deemed the team had allowed its star driver Fernando Alonso to leave the pitlane with a dangerously loose wheel.
Renault has appealed the decision, but it could mean thousands of Spanish fans who had bought tickets to see Alonso are likely to miss the two-time champion.
The decision will also be a big hit for the race organisers, who had already announced they were reducing the seat capacity for this year's event.
Jorge Martinez Aspar, vice-president of Valmor Sport, said he understood that the FIA is putting safety first, but he says the fans should not be hurt by its decision.
"We believe it (the FIA) must also think of the fans and, as everybody knows, a lot of them have bought tickets to see Fernando Alonso racing in Valencia," Aspar told the EFE news agency.
"We believe they must not be the ones paying for this decision.
"We are going to be looking closely at the verdict of the appeal and we have been in contact with the Spanish Federation, with the Renault team, and with Fernando Alonso's people. We would like to have him on the grid in the Valencia grand prix.
"It would be a shame if he missed the race and we are confident that he will be able to race, although we know it will be hard especially considering the other accidents that took place over the weekend.
"What happened is serious, but we hope it doesn't hurt the European Grand Prix or the fans."
EFE also quoted Campos Meta1 team boss Adrian Campos as saying that Alonso's absence from the race would be "a disaster."
"If things were already not going well for the Valencia grand prix, this is just what was needed," said Campos.

1:48pm UK, Monday July 27, 2009
Felipe Massa's life is no longer in danger - but an eye injury the Formula 1 driver sustained in a crash could affect his racing future, a doctor has said.
Felipe Massa
A spring from Ruben Barrichello's Brawn GP car bounced into the Ferrari driver's helmet as he reached speeds of about 190kmph (120mph) during qualifying circuits on Saturday.
The impact before the Hungarian Grand Prix concussed the 28-year-old, who then ploughed into a protective tyre barrier.
Robert Veres, the doctor who performed surgery on the driver, said he was stable and remained sedated "to protect his brain".

The doctor continued that Massa had suffered damage to his left eye but he did not "know the quality of this damage".
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemelo said Ferrari's first priority was Massa's health.
But the Italian team does not "want to wait too long" to decide on finding a driving replacement, he added.
Doctors had induced a coma at the AEK hospital in Budapest, Hungary, after the operation.
Later, Hungarian defence ministry spokesman Istvan Bocskai revealed Massa, who was not yet speaking, had been reacting when spoken to and was moving his hands and feet.
An investigation into the causes and repercussions of the accident has been launched.

The probe will be conducted by the sport's ruling body, the International Motoring Federation, with the Brawn GP team.
Massa suffered multiple skull and eye injuries. The debris hit his helmet just above his left eye at around 275kph.
His carbon-fibre helmet absorbed most of the energy from the spring and appeared to save his life.
The accident came just six days after Briton Henry Surtees, 18, the son of former world champion John Surtees, was killed.
The teenager was hit on the head by a wheel from another car struck that crashed during a Formula Two race at Brands Hatch in England.

RacingOne Report · Posted Monday, July 27, 2009
FIA President Max Mosley has asked the FIA Safety Commission to prepare a report on the recent debris-related accidents in the FIA Formula One World Championship and FIA Formula Two Championship.
The FIA Safety Commission, which is made up of medical and technical representatives from all areas of motor sport, will submit its report and recommendations to the World Motor Sport Council.
Preliminary findings suggest the helmet being used by Felipe Massa may have played a significant role in limiting the injuries sustained. The FIA 8860 helmet, which took eight years to develop by the FIA and FIA Institute, provides increased protection in all key impact areas.
quote:Massa woken up, recovering well
Doctors at the AEK Hospital in Hungary where Felipe Massa is treated told a news conference on Monday that the Brazilian driver has been woken up from sedation in the afternoon, and was on a good way to recovery.
"In the last 24 hours some major changes have gone through in the condition of Felipe Massa," Colonel Dr. Lajos Zsiros, the chief surgeon of the Hungarian Defence Forces, said. "His condition continues to be stable.
"During the CT-scan we performed we could ascertain that there was an improvement in his condition. We stopped sedation and after that Felipe Massa became capable of making contact.
"So in the afternoon we stopped the artificial ventilation of Felipe. As we speak he is sleepy, but he gives adequate answers to the questions we ask him, and he can move his arms and legs spontaneously.
"Right now he has no fever, and we have removed the drain tube from his wound. Further improvement of his condition can be expected. During the night we do not plan to do any more interventions on him."
Zsiros denied earlier reports that Massa, who has suffered a serious accident on Saturday, when a spring broken from the Brawn GP car of Rubens Barrichello hit him on the head during the qualifying session of the Hungarian Grand Prix, had eye injuries.
"It is too early to answer this question. We can give no positive neither negative answer to this, because at this stage the vision cannot be examined", he said, referring to the fact that Massa is not yet able to open his left eye after the accident, so the routine eye inspections could not have been performed so far.
However, the doctor made it clear that a full recovery was possible for the Brazilian.
"There is no such thing as 'this condition', because every case is different," he pointed out. "Of course it isn't impossible."
When asked when they will be able to determine if Massa has suffered any kind of lasting injury, Zsiros said: "There is no interval which we can define, but I would say it should be from one week to ten days."
He added that doctors didn't plan to sedate the Ferrari driver again, but Massa would remain in intensive care as long as his condition made that necessary.
Dino Altmann, the Chief Medical Officer of the Brazilian Grand Prix, who also attended the news conference, confirmed Massa was able to speak. In the morning a statement said he was only "communicating passively."
"He spoke, he wanted to know what happened to him. And he had some questions," Altmann revealed. "I would like to say that the family is very happy with the treatment Felipe is receiving here, and there's no question about transfer at the moment."
Altmann said they didn't yet check if Massa was able to remember the accident. He also revealed that the operation on Saturday, which doctors described as "life-saving", had to be performed because of the skull damage, not because of the brain swelling.
A spokesman to the AEK hospital confirmed Massa's family were already in Budapest, and a room was made available for them so they could stay with the Brazilian all the time.
