In Antwerpen heeft de diamanthandel altijd geleund op onderling vertrouwen, persoonlijke contacten en familiebanden. Met de komst van de Indiërs is deze orde evenwel verstoord. Aida Grovestins kon het vertrouwen winnen in een besloten wereld, en maakte een mooi beeld van wat misschien de teloorgang van de Antwerpse diamantindustrie is.

Despite being the most destructive thing in the Universe, scientists now think our supermassive black hole could be crucial in creating the galaxy as we know it.
The supermassive black hole in our own galaxy may be the reason we exist, but recent work suggests it may also be our end. At present Earth is so far away from the black hole that it can’t affect us, but physicist John Dubinski thinks all that could change. In January 2000 he graphically simulated the final fate of our galaxy. In 3 billion years we will collide with the next door galaxy, Andromeda. The resulting apocalypse will force the Earth and our Solar System out of orbit. Dubinski has calculated a worrying 50:50 chance that we’ll be sent hurtling in towards the black hole at the centre of this maelstrom. This would be fatal for the Earth.

Het is de moeite
The wave op de middelbare school gezien, erg indrukwekkend vond ik dat toen. Net naar Swansea Love Story gekeken...pff wat een troosteloze bende daar in die stad. Maar op een of andere manier creëer je een soort sympathie voor die junks/gebruikers.

Nothing strange about all that. Except the fact that Cameron is only five years old now; his memories seem to be of a former life. Cameron’s stories have become increasingly more detailed since he first started telling them, and the shock of him insisting “I’m a Barra boy, I’m a Barra boy” has worn off a little. But his emotional attachment to his ‘Barra mum’ concerns his mother, and there’s clearly something going on in the poor kid’s head when he says, “My real barra dad doesn’t look left and right.” Intrigued by her enigmatic son, Cameron’s mother Norma has decided to investigate his claims.

Laatst de Vice guide to Liberia gekeken. Documentaire over de burgeroorlog in Liberia waarin onder andere een aantal 'generaals' worden geinterviewd. Behoorlijk heftig, maar wel erg interessant.

Ondertussen melden zich wereldwijd steeds meer zieke piloten die niet meer kunnen vliegen, waaronder piloten van de KLM. Hoe veilig is het in de lucht? Die vraag stelt ZEMBLA in de aflevering ‘Gif in de Cockpit’, die wordt uitgezonden op zondag 21 februari a.s. om 21.45 uur bij de VARA/NPS op Nederland 2.
De 36-jarige Belg A. Adriaensen vertelt in ZEMBLA dat hij een half jaar geleden stopte met zijn werk als piloot, toen hij dagen achter elkaar geen normaal gesprek meer kon voeren. Zijn geheugen liet hem zo in de steek dat hij de draad van het verhaal voortdurend kwijt raakte. Nog steeds is het slecht gesteld met zijn gezondheid. ‘Ik ben constant zwaar vermoeid en ik heb last van oncontroleerbare trillingen.’ De ex-piloot verloor zijn vliegbrevet omdat hij lijdt aan wat het ‘Aero Toxic Syndrom’ is gaan heten. Een ziekte, die is veroorzaakt door aantasting van het centrale zenuwstelsel door de toxische stof TCP. Veel piloten die lijden aan het syndroom weten dat niet van zichzelf, en stoppen daarom ook niet met vliegen.
De vergiftiging ontstaat door olielekkage in de motor, zeggen deskundigen. Daardoor kan het giftige oliebestanddeel TCP in het aircosysteem terechtkomen. Soms gebeurt het ongemerkt en betreft het kleine hoeveelheden. Soms is er sprake van een ‘fume event’, een wolk van stank en rook die de cockpit en/of de cabine vult. Sommige toestellen zijn er berucht om. Zo zijn er veel meldingen op vluchten in de Boeing 757 en de BAe 146. In Nederland zijn vliegtuigmaatschappijen verplicht om fume events en olielekkage te melden aan de Inspectie van Verkeer en Waterstaat. Maar in de praktijk blijkt dit niet altijd te gebeuren.
In Engeland zit in het Breakspear Hospital in Hemel Hempstead de neurofysioloog dokter Peter Julu, die tot nu toe al 22 zieke piloten heeft onderzocht. Bij alle onderzochte patiënten ziet hij hetzelfde patroon van afwijkingen. Hij zegt: ‘Ze vertonen allemaal dezelfde verstoringen van het autonome zenuwstelsel, dat bijvoorbeeld de hartslag aanstuurt. Als ze een joystick vasthouden, slaat hun hart al gauw slagen over of gaat het sneller kloppen.’

Saving Africa's Witch Children - indrukwekkend en aangrijpend. Over kinderen in Nigeria die voor heksen aangezien worden, en daarom door hun eigen familie gemarteld, afgestoten en/of vermoord worden. Sommige kinderen zijn nog niet eens 2 jaar oud.

Jammer dat hollanddoc.nl zo`n slechte website is, onoverzichtelijk.
Geen rss feed voor nieuwe documentaires, de pagina met nieuwe documentaires klopt niet, er staan dingen van 2004 bij tussen die 10 dingen die zogezegd nieuw toegevoegd zijn.
