Het monster in de ogen kijken - niet op de kermis maar in de kiosk, het roddelblad of op internet. Sommige mensen maken er harde grappen over, of verbazen zich over haar schaamteloze exhibitionisme. In an exclusive interview with new!, Jeff Brazier talks about the impact of his ex Jade Goody’s cancer diagnosis, her criticisms of him and why his new relationship makes him happy
Jeff Brazier is not what you would expect.
On TV, he has always come across as a cheeky-chappy Essex boy. But when new! meets him at his house for our exclusive interview, we find someone altogether different. He’s incredibly insightful and serious. But more impressive than that is how composed he is.
After all, Jeff has had a lot of drama to contend with. His relationship with new! columnist Jade Goody – which ended in 2005 – was fiery enough, but he’s now having to deal with the fallout from her cervical cancer.
Since her diagnosis, Jade, 27, has made some less than flattering comments about him, but Jeff refuses to rise to the bait. The 29 year old prefers to stay positive, look after his sons Bobby, five, and Freddie, four, and enjoy his two-and-a-half-year relationship with his girlfriend Amy Purcell, a 27-year-old PA.
The four of them recently went on holiday together to Cyprus and Amy lives with Jeff in his new-build home in Harlow, Essex.
When new! arrives, Jeff opens the door dressed in shorts and trainers with a bag of rubbish in his hand, which he promptly disposes of before rustling up a chicken salad lunch for us.
He’s a busy man these days, presenting several TV shows and also volunteering at his local youth club. Here he talks about his kids, his girlfriend and Jade’s diagnosis…
Jeff, first off, Jade has said some pretty critical things about you in interviews recently. One of which was that she worries that if she dies, you would take the boys out of their school…
I’m aware of what Jade has said – I was shocked and let down. I have tried to understand Jade for years, but all I can say in response is that she’s having a tough time, so I have to remember that the only two people who can ever judge me as a father are Bobby and Freddie. Jade seemed to imply that if I gave them anything other than a private education, I’d be failing the children. So firstly, I’ll have to apologise for not having as much money as her, and secondly I’ll say that 95 per cent of parents in this country can’t afford private schooling for their children, so are they letting their kids down, too? Of course not. Money is of no consequence to the quality of Bobby and Freddie’s childhood. They are lucky in that they have two good parents that love them more than anything in the world. I’d say anything else was secondary.
Jade says she has to nag you to get things done and that the only person who’s good enough for her children is her…
I try to think about why she wanted to say that – it helps me to do that rather than being angry. But [after that interview came out], I dealt with it by going out and buying her some boxing gloves and pads. I was trying to suggest that if she’s angry, she should aim elsewhere. But she texted me to say, “Thanks, Jeff, but fitness is the last thing I’m worried about at the moment.” So it went over her head.
She also said that when she was in hospital recently, the kids got behind with their homework…
What was left was a single sheet of paper. The reason it wasn’t done was because I knew they were visiting their mum, so I thought it would be good for them to sit down and do something together. So I was criticised for being thoughtful. It’s frustrating.
What about Jade’s claim that she pays for everything. How fair is that?
Jade pays for their schooling because that’s her choice. It’s expensive, so it’s not something I can help her with at present, but other than that I do exactly what she asks financially.
So it’s an exaggeration that she pays for everything?
The boys have a life at my house that is a mirror of their life at Jade’s – in terms of their bedroom, clothes, computer, bikes, outfits and toys – so I’m sad about her choosing to use the word “everything”. We have an agreement in place for the days she has the boys more than me, and she’s happy with it. She has not expressed any discontent to me about anything. I’m upset that she didn’t talk to me about her concerns before discussing it with a magazine.
It seems that when Jade is angry or upset, she sometimes says the first thing that comes into her head…
You underestimate her. All the comments she made were for a specific reason, and I don’t even want to discuss what I think that reason is. There is always much more of an underlying psychological factor to whatever it is she does.
How would you describe your relationship with Jade generally?
It’s uncertain and completely dictated by Jade. She prefers to keep me at arm’s length. At first, when she found out about the cancer, she was on the phone to me quite a lot and I was happy to be there for her – it’s what the children would want. But when things are said that aren’t very pleasant, you then realise that it’s Jade putting the distance back between us. Our relationship is on her terms – it’s always been that way. My biggest stress for the last six years has been Jade, and nothing else could ever come close.
So when you look back over your relationship, what do you think of it?
I don’t look back, because I don’t think much of it. There’s two positives: Bobby and Freddie.
Are they the only two positives, then?
Yeah… yeah.
If Jade dies, how would you feel about looking after the boys?
I’m a very positive thinker, so the only eventuality I’ve thought of is that Jade’s going to be absolutely fine. I think people’s main assumption is that I’m sh**ting myself that I’m going to have to take care of my children full time, but I haven’t thought of it like that. I prefer not to – not because I’m scared of that but because I don’t want it to be like that for them. I want them to have their mum and dad in their life.
Have you and Jade discussed what would happen?
I can only encourage Jade to concentrate on getting better and not worry about the what ifs. I brought her attention to the book The Secret [a self-help book], and suggested she read that. Also I’m a mediator. I gave her the number of the person who taught me how to mediate, so I told her that it would help her a lot.
What are your feelings towards Jade’s boyfriend Jack Tweed?
It’s unfortunate for Jade that he’s in jail. Bobby has been told that Jack is in Africa – something needed to be said to explain his disappearance.
When he gets out of prison, how do you feel about Jack taking a parental role in your children’s life, given that he was convicted for violence?
I’m not sure how best to answer that. My life is easier when Jade’s happy, and if that’s what she thinks is going to make her happy then I support her. Jade’s never told me who to be with and who to be around our children, so that’s the last thing I’m going to do with her.
If she were to say that Jack should have the kids if she dies, what would your reaction be?
I don’t even want to comment on that.
How often do you see the boys normally?
Three days a week – Friday till Sunday. I’m less than 20 minutes away.
Jade’s mum Jackiey Budden has been more hands-on of late. How do you feel about that?
Jackiey is brilliant with the boys, so I don’t have any concerns. I can’t judge Jackiey on her past because I didn’t know her. People deserve a second chance.
How is Jade doing now?
Well, when I took the boys home on Monday, Jade wasn’t there so I don’t know. But she’s made an art out of surviving, in one way or another, and I believe she will survive this. When I’ve spoken to her after her treatments, I’ve been pleasantly surprised how buoyant she is.
She says she hasn’t made a will. Does that concern you?
I’m not thinking about anything other than her getting better.
How did you feel when Jade told you about the cancer diagnosis?
Just angry that it hadn’t been caught. And it was shocking because of her age.
Is Amy different from Jade?
Yes. I think if you split up with anyone that it didn’t work out with, you go to the opposite extreme. Amy is someone that I get on with very well – I could count on the fingers of one hand the times I have argued with Amy.
Tell us about your holiday with the boys…
I was in Cyprus with them and Amy for a week. They loved being on holiday and being around lots of kids. Like a lot of siblings, they are the complete opposite of each other – Freddie is very carefree, extrovert and energetic, and Bobby is mature and sensitive.
Have they changed since Jade’s diagnosis?
When they’re with me, they’re the same as they always were, because they live in the moment, but when they go home maybe that’s when you’ll see a difference. Bobby is quite sensitive to situations and I think that he goes on the ups and downs that his mum goes on.
Did you and the boys have any conversations on holiday about what’s going on with their mum?
It didn’t get mentioned and I was happy that was the case. If there are questions to be asked, I think they’ll be directed to their mum.
Can you see marriage on the horizon with you and Amy?
I don’t know. Because of the nature of the relationship that bore my children, I know not to rush.
Would you like more children, though?
I’d love to have a girl.
Is Amy open-minded about having kids?
No! She’s been telling me it needs to happen soon. So there’s a huge amount of pressure on my shoulders right now – but you can’t force these things.
What’s the children’s relationship with Amy like?
If we were to marry, she’d become their step-mum, and I couldn’t imagine a better relationship between them. They trust her 100 per cent.
What’s it like when people stop you on the street and ask about Jade?
It changes. When I feel like she appreciates my support, I don’t really mind. But after that interview, it makes me think that if she doesn’t appreciate any of the support, why should I bother talking on her behalf?
Maar daar kan zij niks over zeggen of van vinden. Die man is de vader en zolang er geen enge redenen zijn (zoals gevangenisstraf en zoquote:Op vrijdag 13 maart 2009 00:28 schreef Nadine26 het volgende:

quote:STRICKEN Jade Goody’s hubby Jack Tweed rushed to her bedside last night after she took a turn for the worse.
Officials changed his curfew address after Jade, 27, who is dying of cancer, became crippled with pain and a nurse called for him.
A probation source said it was “an emergency”.
Jade’s spokesman Max Clifford said: “The nurse decided he must be there as she was in so much pain.”
He added: “We don’t know at this stage how serious it is.
“There must have been a significant change in her condition for Jack to be there.”
Judges had ruled Jack, 21, who is on parole for assault, can only be with her on Thursday and Saturday nights.
But Mr Clifford said they changed the restriction because Jade was in so much pain.
He added: “Jack is the one person able to help her when she is like that.”
He said that mum-of-two Jade plans to celebrate Mothers’ Day tomorrow — a week early.
Jade was earlier said to be delighted after learning the screening age for cervical cancer is to be reviewed.
The Government has said a panel of experts will consider if it should be lowered from 25 to 20 in England — as in Scotland and Wales.
The announcement came after more than 100,000 people signed up to The Sun’s Jade’s Legacy campaign.
The Big Brother star is dying after suffering cervical cancer at her home in Upshire, Essex.
Mr Clifford said: “She is delighted at this news.
“Everybody in Britain knows who’s responsible for this — and that’s Jade.
“She said to me, ‘It’s too late for me, but there’s an awful lot who will benefit through what has happened to me’.”
Health Minister Ann Keen said of the decision: “Screening saves 4,500 lives every year and we want to ensure our programme remains in the best interests of young women.”
The Advisory Committee on Cervical Screening will present its evidence to Ms Keen this year.

Jade deteriorated overnight and is close to the end
CANCER victim Jade Goody was last night just hours from death.
Frail and weak, the desperately-ill star is not expected to live beyond tomorrow.
As family and close friends gathered at her bedside yesterday one pal warned: “It IS now a matter of hours, she has deteriorated dramatically overnight. Sadly she is very close to the end.”
The friend then told how, when the truth sank in on Friday night, reality TV star Jade cried out in terror, screaming for husband Jack Tweed.
“One of the problems is she’s terrified of falling asleep because she’s afraid she’ll never wake up,” said the source.
“That means she completely exhausts herself. It was terrible.”
New hubby Jack, 21, revealed how he, too, panicked when told Jade’s condition had taken a turn for the worse on Friday.
Fearing it was all over, he dashed to his wife’s bedside at her home in Upshire, Essex, after asking Home Office officials to lift the curfew imposed after his early release from a jail sentence for assault.
“When I got the call I was absolutely terrified,” he said. “The thought that our fairytale could be over already filled me with dread and sadness.”
Big Brother legend Jade’s spokesman Max Clifford confirmed: “She has deteriorated. She is very weak. The answer is, who knows? We are on the edge of a precipice.” All but close family and friends have been told Jade, just 27, can no longer see visitors.
The new curfew rules set by hubby Jack’s parole officers mean he can stay with her round-the-clock rather than having to report to his mother’s house 30 minutes away.
And late last night Jade’s grandparents Sylvia and John were expected to join the vigil.
Yesterday Jade’s mum Jackiey Budden was in tears as she passed on the sad news to pals that her daughter knew her precious time was finally up.
Jade was asleep most of the day but when Jackiey emerged to let in nursing staff she was clearly distraught.
A friend said: “She’s been crying her eyes out, she’s been in floods of tears because she too realises it’s nearly the end of the road.
“The family were told maybe Jade would make it to Tuesday but after such a bad night that’s been revised to Monday and maybe sooner.
“She’s in a very bad way and has been in so much awful pain.
“They’ve given her a lot of medication and she’s been in a deep sleep most of the day and hasn’t woken up.
“But Jade’s getting weaker and weaker and is looking very pale.
“We all knew it was getting close when she couldn’t even raise a smile or give a thumbs-up when she was taken home from hospital on Wednesday.
"She’s gone downhill a lot since then and everyone around her is really upset. Her mum Jackiey is in pieces.
“Everyone knew this was going to happen, but it’s still desperately sad.”
Reality TV favourite Jade is being cared for by a team of dedicated specialist nurses.
And yesterday Jackiey, 50, just couldn’t stop herself giving the carer who looked after her daughter overnight a huge cuddle. The emotional mum clasped the departing carer tightly before opening the gates to the house at 9.20am.
Behind her sunglasses Jackiey looked drained and exhausted. She couldn’t bring herself to talk about Jade’s worsening condition but she was there manning the front door when two extra medics arrived at 11.30am.
Farewell
In a brief snatched escape from all the stress, Jackiey later took a 10-minute afternoon trip to the local post office and supermarket to buy some lottery tickets but it was all too much for her and she burst into tears again.
She was then taken for a drive by close family friend, and Jade’s personal trainer, Kevin Adams. to buy fresh flowers as a gift for the nurses.
More flowers, in the shape of two bouquets from well-wishers, arrived later in the day.
Then came a moment of unwanted drama as two born-again Christians trespassed onto the property and shouted up at Jade’s window in an attempt to speak to the ailing star. But the women were ushered away by a concerned neighbour.
The tension rose again at about 5.30pm when a doctor arrived in a silver Audi and, carrying his medical bag, entered the house. He left at about 7.50pm.
With time slipping away fast, Jade has already planned her funeral, insisting it should be a celebration of her life.
She wants a traditional burial and a service will be held at a church near her home.
Jade’s spokesman said: “The funeral will be a reflection of how she’s lived in the last seven years (since she first found fame in Big Brother)—full on.
“She wants to say farewell to anyone who wants to be there. It will mirror the happiest seven years of her life.
“There will be tears, but a lot of love and laughter as well.”
Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty is making a dramatic dash from India in a bid to see Jade one last time before she dies. The pair clashed on 2007 Celebrity Big Brother, but later became friends.
Jade was starring on India’s version of the show, hosted by Shilpa, when she was told she was suffering from cervical cancer last August. At first she was given a reasonable chance of survival but her cancer spread quickly.
Yesterday, there was no sign of Jade’s two sons, five-year-old Bobby and Freddie, four, who are being looked after by relatives. The boys visited their mum on Thursday with their father, Jade’s former partner TV presenter Jeff Brazier.
Knowing the situation, Jade discharged herself from the Royal Marsden Hospital on Wednesday so she could spend these final days at home with her loved ones all around her.
She has tried to keep life as normal as possible for her children, insisting they keep to their school routine.
A friend said: “Jade’s been incredibly brave and is just so pleased that she was able to marry Jack in time and be christened with her boys.
“Those were her final wishes so that she could be close to them when she’s gone.”
The boys and Jack are expected to spend all of today with Jade for a low-key Mothers’ Day, which they will celebrate a week early because of her worsening condition.
En als ze vannacht 'just hours from death' was, dan zijn die uurtjes nu toch wel bijna om?quote:Jade’s spokesman said: “The funeral will be a reflection of how she’s lived in the last seven years (since she first found fame in Big Brother)—full on.

quote:Dying Jade: It's "Critical" Now, Priest Visits Goody
Filed under: Anglophilia > Jade Goody
The last chapter in Jade Goody's life is coming to a quick end.
The dying British reality TV star, whose cervical cancer has spread to other parts of her body - including the brain, was visited by a priest on Sunday and is in a coma-like state, her publicist is saying.
Keeping the public informed on her health, like a morbid reality show, her rep says, "She is unconscious a lot of the time, almost in a coma-like state. She's heavily sedated, so she comes round for maybe a few minutes, sometimes just a few seconds and she goes again. She seems to be aware that [new husband[ Jack and [her mother] Jackiey are here."
Her rep says Goody's condition is "critical" and "It's just a matter of when."
Truly heartbreaking!
Goody has been unable to see her two young children since Wednesday, due to her weakened state.
"She was hoping to be well enough to see the boys but at the moment she is in a very bad state, she is very unwell," says her publicist.
Goody left London's Royal Marsden Hospital on Wednesday. Nurses onat her home have been able to control her crippling pain, but the painkillers appear to take their own toll. "The more sedated she is, the weaker she gets," adds the rep.
Our thoughts with Jade and her family.
quote:But amid the heartbreak, defiant Jade astonished medics by blasting a nurse who she heard discussing her health. The star overheard the gloomy conversation as she lay in bed. And she yelled: “I’m not f****** dead yet, so stop that talk.”
Want dat wilden wij toch graag even weten, hoe Jade precies reageerde toen ze begreep dat ze echt zou doodgaan.quote:The friend then told how, when the truth sank in on Friday night, reality TV star Jade cried out in terror, screaming for husband Jack Tweed.
Ja, terrible inderdaad. Maar we hebben natuurlijk wel te maken met een heel bijzonder geval, een geval dat nog veel tragischer is dan alle andere gevallen ter wereld:quote:“One of the problems is she’s terrified of falling asleep because she’s afraid she’ll never wake up,” said the source.
“That means she completely exhausts herself. It was terrible.”
Want het blijft natuurlijk een sprookje, zolang Jade nog niet dood is. Met dat schitterende, diep doorleefde huwelijk en die beeldschone jurk en alles. Maar helaas, ook sprookjes eindigen soms slecht.quote:“When I got the call I was absolutely terrified,” he said. “The thought that our fairytale could be over already filled me with dread and sadness.”

She has arranged giant TV screens to show the church service to the crowds expected to gather outside.
The BB favourite organised every detail of the day, even picking a coffin made of oak from Royal Windsor Forest.
She chose hymns including her favourite All Things Bright and Beautiful and asked friends to give readings.
A procession of seven cars will take her coffin from her home in Upshire, Essex, to the churchyard of St John the Baptist, Buckhurst Hill.
One is a Daimler once used by the Queen Mum and another is a Rolls-Royce which was owned by the Sultan of Brunei.
Jade has chosen undertakers F A Albin & Sons — who featured in ITV1 documentary Don’t Drop The Coffin.
They have strong links to Bermondsey, South London, where Jade grew up. A memorial to her will be placed in the firm’s garden.
Mum Jackiey Budden, hubby Jack Tweed and ex Jeff Brazier will make sure her wishes are carried out.
A host of celebrities will attend the funeral — which could be the biggest public outpouring of grief since the death of Princess Diana.
A friend said: “Jade has it all organised to make sure she leaves this world in style.
“She has been inundated with letters from fans since she was diagnosed and knows how many people want to say goodbye to her.”
Jade’s spokesman Max Clifford said: “She wants it to be a big celebration because it’s her final farewell. It will be a very Jade Goody event — exactly the way she wants it.”
