The 2009 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship will be the 16th World Championship organised by the Professional Darts Corporation since it separated from the British Darts Organisation. John Part will be the defending champion having won the PDC World Championship for the second time in last year's final against Kirk Shepherd. The event will take place from December 19 2008 to January 4 2009 - albeit with two breaks in between for Christmas and New Year. Again, the tournament will take place at London's Alexandra Palace having moved from the Circus Tavern in Purfleet for the 2008 competition.

However, the total prize money in the preliminary round is higher this year because of the two-player expansion. The prize money is allocated as follows:
