Al is het nog steeds de gecensureerde versie
en de videokwaliteit is net als de audio van de cd ver beneden peil van zon grote artiest als Madonna
I watched the DVD's today and agree with weismman on almost everything. The video quality, it is unacceptable.
But I didn't think the audio wins over the prior two collections in many cases. Both PCM and 5.1 soundtracks are cranked up to near saturation on this compilation, just like on the CD's. Another victim of loudness wars.
Also in many of the videos after video fade out, the audio plays longer than on the original videos.
Here are a few comments to complement weissman's report:
2. LUCKY STAR
Video: Alternate edit, (a minute shorter than the one on the Immaculate Collection), so let's compare it with the same version of the video which is currently circulating from a promo DVD.
This video is actually the original version, it first appeared on the Immaculate Collection VHS and laserdiscs in 1990. When it was released on DVD nine years later, they chose a remix video which is longer and was originally released on her first "The First Four Videos" compilation, circa 1984.
But the audio on this video is a fake edit. The original audio features the edited version found on the 7" singles. I didn't watch the whole video, but the intro uses different edit points. Sounds random as most everything on this collection...
11. OPEN YOUR HEART
Audio [pcm track]: Again, same as for the other TB tracks: Very proper and respectful remasters.
Winner (video): Almost a draw, but the IC version, still, even though a bit too pale, has much better encoding and grain.
Winner (audio): This one.
I don't agree in that it's a proper remaster. The audio intro of the video which is unique to it sounds terrible in here. It sounds like a Dolby NR encoded tape with the NR set to off, if you know what I mean. And the sound is almost without treble and "brightens" a little right before the album version kicks in. What the...? From there on, it sounds closer to what it should. Because of this f... up intro and the saturated levels afterwards, I definitely choose the cleaner sounding IC video.
15. EXPRESS YOURSELF
Audio [pcm track]: Different remaster than the one used on the CD version of Celebration, weirdly enough. There's still that crappy noise right at the start, but the missing echo on "Do you believe in love?" is back like in the original video, and it's not the same awful copy'n'paste job than on the CD. A decent remaster overall.
Winner (video): Needless to say, the IC version.
Winner (audio): The IC version worked well enough. This one is nicely boosted but features some unwanted elements, so... your pick.
The scratching sound at the beginning was not present on the Immaculate Collection released video, but I clearly remember watching it on MTV and was surprised to hear that sound on a black screen and then the video would fade in, just like here.
This is a completely different audio mix than the video in Immaculate Collection, which was released later cutting some "improper close to nudity" scenes towards its end. So it's hard to pick other than for personal taste. But on a technical view, this version is definitely better. The IC version has a buzzing sound on the background throughout the entire video, and sound is muffled. That is the way it sounded on TV as well, by the way, so it's not an IC mastering issue.
17. VOGUE
Video: Probably the closest between all the IC versions and the Celebration versions. Virtually the same, nothing has been retouched except, guess what? ****ing noise reduction filter again.
Actually, there is another issue with video on this one. At the beginning, the first shot of her back has a quick video drop, the screen goes black and then back. This was not present on the Immaculate Collection or when the video was aired in its time.
42. GET TOGETHER (alternate version)
Video: Ridiculous short edit. Below average picture quality. Questionable use of a badly done 16:9 encoding (the only one of this set so far, all the other letterboxed videos are in non-anamorphic 4:3, 1.33:1 ratio)
Badly done yes, but no 16:9 image here. This one looks like some widescreen videos are played on MTV: instead of letterboxing they stretch the image vertically, so there are no bars on top and bottom. So everything looks stretched. Looks like hell. To view it properly on this compilation, you can set your TV to horizontal stretch mode. Or you can throw the DVD away
46. MILES AWAY
Video: Quite good actually, compared to the vob ripped from the promo DVD. The second (and last) video from the set to be encoded in 16:9.
Audio [pcm track]: Very similar, but louder than the promo version.
Winner (video): This version because of the 16:9 encoding and clearer/better colors and definition.
I don't think this video is 16:9 encoded on this compilation. I have a widescreen TV and DVD player set for 16:9. Instead of seeing a picture that covers the screen horizontally, you get a letterboxed 4:3 image. On top of that it's slightly vertically stretched. What the f....? again.
Stay miles away!
Shame on whoever people should have taken this project more seriously regardless of the fact it would sell anyway
