quote:“Dexter” author Jeff Lindsay makes a cameo appearance Sunday on his hit TV show about a good-guy serial killer. And, no, he won’t be going under Dexter’s skillful scalpel — although many of Lindsay’s friends have suggested exactly that.
“I don’t know what that says about me that people want to see that,” the Cape Coral man said. “But I don’t think I’d like to see myself naked on Dexter’s table and wrapped in plastic wrap.”
Instead, Lindsay plays a vice cop guarding a hospital room. He even exchanges a few lines with homicide detective Angel Batista (played by David Zayas).
“I probably get about 45 seconds to a minute onscreen,” Lindsay said. “Unless they cut my lines.”
This isn’t Lindsay’s first time acting. He used to be a stage actor in Los Angeles and even ran a theater there, The Wallenboyd.
Lindsay has wanted to appear on the TV show since it first aired in 2006. “It’s really easy to make these things happen if you beg nonstop for a year,” he said.
The Showtime series is based on Lindsay’s popular “Dexter” novels. He’s editing the fourth book, “Dexter by Design.”
The new book follows Dexter as he goes to Paris for his honeymoon and soon gets involved in the world of modern art. It’s scheduled to come out this May.
In the books and TV show, Dexter is a police blood-spatter specialist who moonlights — literally — as a serial killer. But here’s the twist: He kills only pedophiles, murderers and other people who deserve it.
The show (starring Michael C. Hall) just got renewed for two more seasons, Lindsay said. That’s not surprise considering its popularity. “Dexter” attracts about 2.5 million viewers per week, according to Showtime.
Lindsay hopes his vice-cop character can appear again on the series. That is, if everyone likes his acting.
“I was a little bit rusty,” he said. “I don’t want to embarrass anyone. Especially myself. But it was so much fun.”
