Affliction MMA has confirmed with MMARated.com that former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski will face current WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction ‘Day of Reckoning’ in late January 2009.
The dream match that most fans have fantasized about for years is finally here.
Arlovski (14-5) was last seen devouring IFL veteran Roy “Big Country” Nelson at EliteXC ‘Heat’ on October 4. After losing back-to-back fights in the UFC against Tim Sylvia, Arlovski has gone on to win five straight with four (T)KO’s.
He is a superior striker and one of the most athletic heavyweights in combat sports today.
He’ll be challenging what may be the finest mixed martial artist on the planet in Emelianenko. “The Last Emperor” is a mind-boggling 28-1 and was the last man to hold the PRIDE Heavyweight strap before the promotions untimely demise.
Emelianenko last competed at Affliction ‘Banned’ back in July when he submitted former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia is just 36 seconds.
This will be Emelianenko’s biggest and most anticipated fight since his battle with Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic back at PRIDE Final Conflict 2005.
“Day of Reckoning” was originally scheduled to be held in the Fall of 2008 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas until slow ticket sales and a lukewarm response prompted a postponement. Since then, Affliction has entered into a new partnership with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.
Not to worry, “Day of Reckoning” will not feature any boxing matches according to Affliction Vice-President Tom Atencio.
Exact details of the date, location and main card fights are expected to be released sometime next week. Not that they’re overly important at this stage. After all, we’re getting Arlovski vs. Emelianenko.
What (or who) else matters?

KIMBO SLICE’S mixed martial arts career appears to be over after unknown Seth Petruzelli knocked him out in just 14 seconds last weekend.
The defeat leaves the heavyweight’s future in turmoil and could spell the end of the promotion relying on him.
Elite XC are $55million in debt and can no longer use Slice as their figurehead after his devastating loss if they are to remain credible.
They have built their offering around Kimbo based on his huge popularity from a series of street fighting videos he had posted on YouTube prior to launching his MMA career.
Slice has headlined all four Elite XC events he has appeared in. But despite being fed a string of has-beens in his short-lived professional career, all it took was a simple jab to kill off the Elite XC circus.
Petruzelli is a light-heavyweight with 14 MMA fights to his name and was originally scheduled to fight on the non-televised card such was his low stock.
Slice towered over him yet despite giving up two inches in height, four in reach and 30 pounds in muscle and might, the 28-year-old American did what many in the know expected him to do and emerged with the win.
The 34-year-old's lack of experience was just waiting to be exposed by an experienced MMA fighter following a farcical start to his pro career.
Slice's first taste of mixed martial arts was a shambolic fight against boxing legend Ray Mercer.
The 46-year-old former WTO heavyweight champion, who was overweight, untrained and long past his prime, tapped out early in the first round of their clash.
But Kimbo's professional MMA debut was against Bo Cantrell, a man whose previous four bouts had lasted approximately 30 seconds each.
The fight was notable only for the manner in which it ended. Slice laid exactly one punch to his challenger’s armpit before Cantrell dropped and frantically tapped out.
Up next was a bout against former UFC star Tank Abbott – a 43-year-old veteran of the sport who had lost eight and won just one MMA fight in a decade.
The unfit and ring rusty Abbott barely laid a hand on his opponent during their 43-second fight, with Slice winning via TKO.
But Elite XC suffered another low in their attempts to challenge the UFC as the world’s No1 MMA brand when they pitted Slice against Brit James Thompson.
The 29-year-old came to the cage sporting a cauliflower ear which had not been drained properly.
Thompson won the opening two rounds and was dominating the third when Slice caught him with a right hand that popped his ear – showering both men in blood.
He dropped to the mat and took two more punches to the head before the referee jumped in and stopped the fight early. Even Elite XC’s commentators called the decision ‘horrible’.
But the lastest fiasco involving Kimbo did not surprise SunSport columnist Paul Heyman.
The former wrestling promoter claims the outcome leaves Elite XC facing a very uncertain future.
Heyman said: “The Kimbo debacle was the death knell for Elite XC. If I were Showtime, I'd cut and run.
“Kimbo got knocked out by an unknown and not an unknown they can build the promotion around.
“Now Elite XC have nothing to carry the top of the card and the ratings demonstrated an audience interest in Kimbo which must now be dead.
“The promotion was built around Kimbo and it didn't even seem to matter that he was obviously being protected.
“People were into the character, the aura, the Mike Tyson-like persona of the baddest man from the streets kicking everyone's butt.
“But the promotion didn't protect him and everything about the fight, from the no-name opponent to the ref stoppage to the forced 'Rocky' comparisons, has caused a backlash from some and total apathy from others.
“It was a bad day for Elite XC and a great one for Dana White.”
So where does Slice go from here? There are only really two possible options. Elite XC could set up a rematch with Petruzelli and give Kimbo the chance to avenge his loss.
But this is risky because if Petruzelli was to beat him again, Slice’s career as a headline draw would be over.
So Elite XC could reschedule the fight against Ken Shamrock – the man he was originally supposed to face on Saturday night.
Shamrock’s stock has fallen dramatically – he is 2-8 in his last 10 fights – but he is a legend in the sport and victory for Slice would at least give him a shred of credibility among MMA critics.

Hij cut gewoon fucking veel zodat ie makkelijk 10 pounds kan bijkomen na de weigh-ins zodat ie een voorsprong heeft op zijn tegenstander.
Mijn persoonlijke mening over Alves:
