He has made 13 of the past 14 Grand Slam finals, and Roger Federer took revenge on the man that stopped him short at the semi-final stage of the Aussie Open by completely dismantling Novak Djokovic in a stellar display. He seemed the Roger of old, the serve working a treat, the movement sublime with some trademark down-the-line forehands startling the Serb and the volleying crisp as ever. Aside from his sloppy affair with Andreev in R4, the Swiss master has cut down on his unforced errors and a ratio of 1.56 winners for every unforced mistake is still very good in anyone's eyes. He has produced 84 aces - fourth highest for the tournament - and never won less than 73% of points behind his first or less than 51% behind his ever-reliable second serve. He has had a very relaxing day and a half rest whilst Andy Murray was forced to wait an entire day before nervously finishing off an epic 4 set win over the world number one Rafael Nadal in a dominant display that proved that the Spaniard still has some way to go to prove his diversity on all surfaces. The Scot was wasteful converting just 4 of 20 break opportunites, but his aggression and purposeful ventures forward not to mention some brilliantly accurate serving had Rafa gasping for breath. His ratio is 1.52 winners for every unforced error, rattled down 78 aces and has won 79% behind his first serve. He has some issues here though - he has obviously never been to the final of a Grand Slam event whereby his nerves are sure to play a part, he seems to get lost in his play when ahead on the scoreboard and has had the inferior preparation for this match because of the fact he will have played 3 consecutive days. Murray has beaten Federer the last times and leads 2-1 overall, but winning 3 sets against Roger is something that only Nadal has managed to do on a consistent basis. The Brit has improved his serve immensely, can penetrate off both wings and is a mighty fine defender, but you get the feeling he may come up short against the quality and experience of Federer. The world number two will have an edge on serve, is a far better volleyer and is much stronger on the forehand wing if it's on song. He will look to take aim at the Murray backhand wing when he approaches because Andy doesn't seem to be able to flick his wrists as well as he does on the forehand side - Llodra showed this for much of their match. The slice backhand may also work a treat again here for Roger, and in a press conference he said he was "super keen" to edge ever so close to Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam titles. The great man is 12-4 in Grand Slam finals with all four losses to Rafael and after impressing so much on the practice courts both prior and post his match with Djokovic it really is hard to go past him and the vastly pro-Roger New York crowd will get him over the line in 4 tough sets.
