Nick Symmonds recently called from China and talked about the trip, Opening Ceremony highlights and his training in preparation of Wednesday's preliminary round in the men's 800 meters.

His Olympic adventure didn't begin smoothly as his flight out of Eugene, Ore., was canceled, forcing he and fellow Eugene-based distance runners Andrew Wheating (800) and Dathan Ritzenhein (marathon) to take a shuttle to Portland to catch a different flight.

But on Aug. 6, the trio arrived in San Jose, Calif., in time for team processing, where they gathered their U.S. gear.

"It was awesome," he said. "It was pretty incredible. We knew we would get a ton of gear, but had no idea. We got bags and bags full of amazing gear."

The trio then arrived at the U.S. track and field team's training camp in Dalian, China, on Aug. 7.

After settling in, Symmonds and his U.S. 800 teammates joined the rest of Team USA at the Opening Ceremony, where they mingled with everyone from President George W. Bush to LeBron James, who posed for a photo with them.

"I was extremely excited to meet LeBron James and he was really nice, too," Symmonds said. "That will definitely be one of the highlights."

Symmonds then returned to Dalian to train for his race. He said the funniest part about training are the body guards, who bike behind him during training runs.

"They have to follow you, but sometimes they have a little trouble keeping up, especially on hills," Symmonds said. "They do everything to stay with us and they'll be in good shape. Sometimes they're just beat. But Dalian is great and the people here really embraced the American team."

He hasn't done a lot of sightseeing with his focus on the 800, but said he plans to join his family after he's done racing to "take a look around."

Dat zijn populariteit stijgende is in Nederland is hem inmiddels ook duidelijk geworden toen hij door Mart Smeets persoonlijk werd uitgenodigd om aan te schuiven bij Studio Sportzomer, maar toen Mart zei dat hij "hardly welcome" was heeft hij er toch maar voor bedankt.
