Brilliant Oranje crush Les Bleus
IN BERNE FRIDAY the 13th for the French, the start of a very long, very liquid weekend for the 60,000 wonderful Dutch fans in town here. Holland thrillingly showed there is life after the Group of Death, winning this breathless encounter with the traumatised French to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2008.

Goals of growing majesty from Dirk Kuyt, Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder crushed France, for whom Thierry Henry scored but really only Franck Ribery impressed. France threatened at times, but whenever they did, Marco van Basten’s elegant counter-attackers simply nipped off and scored.

France fashioned 23 goal attempts to Holland’s 16, but Van Basten’s attackers were simply more clinical and his goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, more athletic and alert in the face of any incoming threat. Victory was also a personal triumph for Holland’s coach, whose substitutions in the second half, particularly the insertion of Van Persie and Robben, proved inspired. Why consolidate when you can entertain?

“I didn’t expect it to go as well as this,’’ Van Basten remarked. “It may look easy but that is down to the quality and intelligence of the players. You have seen the skill and how good they are. There is a great hunger and team spirit.”

Intriguing times lie ahead, times and tactics that may cause consternation amongst the French and Italians. Having won Group C, Van Basten now holds the fate of the 2006 World Cup finalists in his hands. If the Dutch coach rests A-listers like Sneijder and Ruud van Nistelrooy against Romania here on Tuesday, and Adrian Mutu and company prevail, then the 2006 World Cup finalists will both be out.

If France and Italy draw in Zurich, lifting them to two points, Romania can still slip up against Holland’s reserves and progress provided they lose by fewer than three goals. Romania will not be short of belief, having taken four points off Holland in qualifying.

Those who know Van Basten say he is unlikely to make wholesale changes, and even if talents like Van Nistelrooy are rested, understudies of the quality of Klaas Jan Huntelaar can step up. “We will be taking the game against seriously,” Van Basten promised.

Anyway, Italy and France can have no complaints, having both been put to the rapier by Holland.

For the good of the tournament, it is welcome news that the Dutch fans will remain. Even before the end of another rich slice of Euro 2008 entertainment, the announcer was warning of congestion in Berne centre because of Dutch fans partying.

With 40,000 Dutch visitors in this picturesque town, and another 20,000 in the stadium, it felt like there could not have been anyone left in Amsterdam or Rotterdam yesterday. They must all have been here, swaying like huge fields of orange tulips, belting out the Dutch national anthem, seemingly occupying three-quarters of the Stade de Suisse.

One corner belonged to the blue units from France, and it was full of bonhomie when Ribery went close early on, but it was stunned into silence after nine minutes when Kuyt came calling to score Holland’s first, exploiting appalling marking by Florent Malouda to head in a corner. Malouda appeared more interested in checking the needlework on Kuyt’s shirt then properly pressuring him. After a disappointing season at Anfield, Kuyt is shining at Euro 2008, having also impressed in the 3-0 defeat of Italy.
As Holland celebrated, as the great Johan Cruyff smiled in his VIP seat, France looked shell-shocked. In their hour of need, they turned to Ribery. The Bayern Munich attacker again put in the yards, created openings, and will have added to his army of Premier League admirers.

Staring ignominy in the orangepainted face, France did strive overtime to find a way back into the game. Sidney Govou fired in a shot seemingly destined for the net until Van der Sar stretched out his left leg to divert the danger.

Ribery, England’s nimble nemesis in Paris earlier this season, remained France’s main source of hope, the livewire dribbler testing Van der Sar with a low shot. Henry began to show, screaming with some justification for a penalty when his shot crashed into Andre Ooijer’s arm as the second half opened.

When German refereee Herbert Fandel waved the protests away, Henry’s frustration deepened. He knew it was a penalty. Maybe it was because the Barcelona forward was still stewing that he wasted a fabulous chance moments later, lobbing Van der Sar but lifting his ball into the crowd.

Such profligacy was soon punished. Van Nistelrooy back-heeled the ball down the left to Robben, who was off and running, showing sprinter’s pace in arriving quickly at the byeline. Having looked up once, Robben delivered a ball that was perfection, placed for Van Persie to meet the ball first-time. Gregory Coupet managed a touch but not enough to stop the ball rolling across the line.

France gave themselves brief hope, Henry applying the most delicate of touches to turn Willy Sagnol’s right-wing cross past Van der Sar. The chants of joy scarcely had time to form in French throats when Holland arrogantly restored their two-goal cushion.

Robben exchanged passes with Schneijder and hurtled down the insideleft channel. Lilian Thuram attempted to close him down, but the Real Madrid striker was too clever. Spotting that

Coupet had failed to keep tight to his near-post, Robben just drilled the ball home.

Holland left the best to last, Sneijder turning and beating Coupet from 25 yards. Some goals. Some team.

It was France’s worst defeat during a tournament since the 1958 World Cup. France were devastated. “I am not happy and nor are the players,’’ said Raymond Domenech. “This hurts and we were not efficient enough. It is frustrating but it isn’t over.’’

L'Equipe vervolgde: 'Geweldig machtig en vol zelfvertrouwen is het elftal van Marco van Basten er vol voor gegaan om de eerste plaats veilig te stellen. En toen het klaar was met spelen, had het fluoriscerende Oranje de ogen van de toeschouwers geopend.' The Guardian doopte Euro 2008 om in 'Holland's playground: de speeltuin van de Nederlanders'. 'Hun voetbal glanst van zelfvertrouwen. Zelfs toen Frankrijk dichterbij kwam, produceerden zij direct een derde goal. Wesley Sneijders lovely uithaal vanaf zestien meter maakte het feest prachtig af. En als je de impact van invaller Robben in ogenschouw neemt, dan zijn deze opponenten te vrezen. (...) Het lijkt alsof Robben noch zijn ploeg in toom kan worden gehouden.'

El País zag een 'briljant Holanda.' De Spaanse kwaliteitskrant zag dat Nederland wel wat problemen had met de Franse aanvallers, maar zag ook dat Les Bleus volop kansen misten. Oranje won dan ook terecht, aldus de Spanjaarden. 'Het spel van Nederland verdiende een mooie handtekening. Sneijder was daarvan de auteur. De middenvelder van Real Madrid lanceerde een schot en klopte Coupet.'

TWO World Cup finalists tormented, the rest should be a dawdle, right? With the Netherlands, life is never that simple, yet Marco van Basten’s side have made a compelling case for greatness.

This was an indescribably awesome experience, not to mention a humiliating one forthe French coach, Raymond Domenech. Defeatwas inflicted even more enthusiastically and expertly on France than it was the Italians. This, after the Dutch displayed a resolve and bravery that was rarely required against Roberto Donadoni’s sterile side.

Van Basten’s tactical bravery was rewarded with a legendary performance. On the evidence of the last two matches, with seven goals plundered against two football superpowers, he has sold himself short by agreeing to return to Ajax. The sheer ballsiness of his decisionmaking was perhaps in spite of the attendant puritan Johan Cruyff. Holland’s greatest-ever player and now biggest critic made the journey in a show of solidarity. This was Total Football in the realm of fantasy.

It is a crying shame that the most entertaining and flamboyantly followed team in Euro 2008 are stuck in the pokiest stadium but they are already destined for a grander stage. They meet the runnersup in Group D in the last 16 and on this form will obliterate all before them en route to the Ernst Happel Stadium on June 29.

Holland had thevast majority of the Stade de Suisse on their side but, when required, luck favoured the Oranje, too. They escaped a legitimate penalty claimwith only DirkKuyt’s goal to show for their swaggering brilliance. Van Basten then, against all rational thought, overloaded his team with attackers and virtually dispensed of his midfield for the second half. It was a gamble that bordered on suicidal but one that paid off spectacularly. Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie were added to the already heady concoction and combined to score a breakaway goal that punctured France at their most dangerous.

Thierry Henry sparked a comeback that lasted precisely 60 seconds. No sooner had he given France renewed hope, Robben hared up the park to scoop a third goal past Gregory Coupet. By then, defence was a futile exercise. Wesley Sneijder earned his second man of the match award in succession with a sensational fourth goal that summed up the sheer expressionism at the core of Holland’s imperious form.
The Dutch continued from where they left off against Italy; their passing sublime, their understanding subliminal. They exhibited an artistry Vincent van Gogh would have been envious of. Inspiration was in plentiful supply but the introduction of Robben at half time was a masterstroke. The Real Madrid winger was rabid after missing the opening game through his latest ailment. Accommodating such an awesome array of attacking talent is a bigger concern for Van Basten than the remaining competition. This is throwback football.

Domenech administered radical surgery of his own, Patrice Evra, Henry and Sidney Govou all featuring in 4-2-3-1 designed to mirror the Dutch. Imitation is the best form of flattery but there is nothing like the genuine article.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the city centre isvery busy,”a public announcement declared, in comical understatement, at the end. The Dutch, around 60,000 at the last conservative count, have colonised the picturesque town of Berne and, in doing so, have provided one of the most colourful and comical spectacles of Euro 2008. The local council have added a third jumbo screen to the Kornhausplatz to satisfy the demands of non-ticketed supporters who have at least doubled in number since the 3-0 defeat of Italy.

The Neuenegg FanZone has been renamed the Oranje-Dorp. After the Oranje Elvises of the opening game, the tulip car and human clog have joined this wacky-backy wonderland. Famous faces mingledwithJoevan derPunter. Arthur Numan, Bert Konterman and Michel Doesburg made their way from Zurich to Berne,blendinginanonymously with their ow n colourcoordinated clothing. They arrived for a party and did not wait long to be entertained.

Kuyt’s appetiser was the easiest goal of his career. Van der Vaart’s swirling corner ought to have been intercepted by Gregory Coupet. Instead, the Liverpool attacker simply had to poke out his head to beat the goalkeeper and his mannequin marker, Florent Malouda.

Holland spent the rest of the half stroking the ball and looking for the perfect goal. It almost arrived, Van der Vaart’s shot blocked after spraying a sublime sequence of nine uninterrupted one-touch passes across the field. The French became ever more harassed in their efforts. Govou was the most likely source of inspiration, provoking three saves in quick succession from Edwin van der Sar before Franck Ribery’s roving run was halted by the goalkeeper.

Remarkably, Holland reemerged with five attackers, Robben replacing Engelaar with Van der Vaart dropping backto help Nigel deJong.Total Football or total madness? France were intent on ensuring the latter. They protested vehemently and justifiably when Henry’s shot bounced off
