Open-wheel veteran Paul Tracy could be poised to return to the IndyCar Series in Edmonton - if Vision Racing can find the money to run him.
Indy Racing League CEO Tony George has revealed that he, and others, are working to get Paul Tracy into the fold in time for the Canadian's 'home' event in Edmonton later this month - but admits that time is still against the veteran.
Speaking to the Associated Press in the build-up to this weekend's road course event at Watkins Glen, George confirmed that he was trying to get Tracy - out of work since the final Champ Car event at Long Beach in April - into an IndyCar, and potentially one of his own Vision Racing entries, for the recently-added event at Edmonton City Airport and, possibly, a couple of others between now and the end of the year - provided that the right funding can be sought.
Initial claims suggested that Tracy had been offered four road or street course outings, beginning in two weeks' time at Mid-Ohio, but George admits that a two-race plan is more likely, with Infineon Raceway in August joining Edmonton.
"We're still trying to make something happen," George said, "but we're running out of time. It's just a matter of finding some sponsorship, but I can't do anything to dilute our primary effort - and I don't want to. It's got to be a deal we can take to Paul and one he's comfortable with.
"I think I have figured out what would be the best way to structure it but, until I get some indication that there's some sponsorship support for it, then there's not much more to do at this point."
Tracy made no secret of his desire to join the unified IndyCar Series following the demise of Champ Car, but his insistence on only wanting to race with one of the leading teams after former employer Forsythe shut its operation worked against him.
Vision has long been mooted as the best opportunity for the Canadian, who would slot in alongside regular pilots Ed Carpenter and AJ Foyt IV in much the same way as veteran Davey Hamilton did for the Indianapolis 500.
