HARARE/BRUSSEL (AP, DS) - Morgan Tsvangirai heeft een auto-ongeval overleefd. Over het lot van zijn vrouw Susan heerste gisteravond onduidelijkheid. Kwaad opzet is niet uitgesloten.


De Zimbabwaanse premier en voormalige oppositieleider Morgan Tsvangirai is gisteren even buiten de hoofdstad Harare betrokken geraakt bij een auto-ongeval. Volgens een woordvoerder van zijn partij, de Beweging voor Democratische Verandering (MDC), is de premier buiten levensgevaar. Kwaad opzet is niet uitgesloten, aangezien Tsvangirai in het verleden al verregaande vormen van intimidatie heeft ondergaan. Hij is op een keer door aanhangers van president Robert Mugabe bijna van de tiende verdieping van een gebouw gekegeld.

Over het lot van Tsvangirai's vrouw Susan heerste gisteravond grote onduidelijkheid. Eerst werd bericht dat ze was omgekomen. Maar de website van de premier meldde dan weer dat Susan Tsvangirai in kritieke toestand verkeerde.

Ook een medewerker van Tsvangirai was bij het ongeval betrokken. Het laatste bericht was dat ze alledrie verwondingen hadden opgelopen. De Zimbabwaanse dictator Robert Mugabe, die na de vorming van de coalitieregering toch president bleef, bracht Tsvangirai gisteren in het ziekenhuis een bezoek.

Tvangirai legde op 11 februari de eed af als premier van Zimbabwe, in een regering van nationale eenheid met Robert Mugabe. Aan die regeringsvorming ging maanden van politiek bakkeleien vooraf, terwijl Zimbabwe verder richting afgrond afgleed.

Tsvangirai is een voormalige vakbondsleider. Toen duidelijk werd dat zijn MDC een belangrijke uitdager zou zijn voor de partij Zanu-PF van Robert Mugabe, schuwde de president de intimidatie niet. Tsvangirai werd onder meer afgetroefd en heel wat van zijn medestanders werden gearresteerd. Ook toen Tsvangirai premier werd, zaten heel wat leden van MDC nog in de cel. (iro)

Hopen dat die vrouw dan toch nog leeft...

Heel tragisch dat dit uitgerekend Tsvangirai moet overkomen.

Zou eigenlijk denken dat Mugabe weinig van Tsvangirai te vrezen heeft . maar wellicht heeft ie het zekere voor het onzekere genomen, zoals dictators wel vaker doen

Partij Tsvangirai wil onafhankelijk onderzoek ongeluk

HARARE - De partij van de Zimbabwaanse premier Morgan Tsvangirai wil dat er een onafhankelijk onderzoek komt naar het verkeersongeluk waarbij Tsvangirais vrouw vrijdag om het leven kwam.

Dat zei een parlementslid van de Beweging voor Democratische Verandering (MDC) zaterdag.
Sinds de fatale aanrijding doen allerlei verhalen de ronde. Zo beschuldigde MDC-woordvoerder Sibanengi Dube de ZANU-PF van president Mugabe van betrokkenheid bij de aanrijding.

''In werkelijkheid was het geen ongeluk, het was een perfect georganiseerde aanslag om de MDC-leider uit te schakelen'', zei hij zaterdag tegen het Zuid-Afrikaanse persbureau SAPA.

Botsing

De auto van het echtpaar Tsvangirai kwam in de omgeving van de hoofdstad Harare in botsing met een tegemoetkomende vrachtwagen. Ze waren op weg naar Tsvangirais thuisstad Buhera, waar hij een toespraak zou houden.

Zimbabwean prime minister's wife dies in crash

HARARE, Zimbabwe: The prime minister of Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai, was hurt and his wife, Susan, fatally injured on Friday in a car crash about 45 miles south of the capital, according to officials of Tsvangirai's political party, the Movement for Democratic Change.

Tsvangirai was heading to his rural home for a Saturday rally when the crash occurred Friday afternoon. From his hospital bed in Harare on Friday, he told one of his aides that a large truck driving on the other side of the road had come toward his Land Cruiser, the middle vehicle in a three car convoy. The truck driver told the police that he had fallen asleep at the wheel, said the aide, Dennis Murira, director of public affairs in the prime minister's office.

"What he told me was that the truck went for his car," Murira said. "That's how he put it."

The crash, coming less than a month after Tsvangirai was sworn in as prime minister in a tense and long-negotiated power-sharing government with his rival, President Robert Mugabe, stirred deep suspicions in his party, but most officials were careful to say not enough was known about the collision to make any accusations of foul play.

Mugabe and his wife paid a condolence call to Tsvangirai at the hospital on Friday evening.

Murira said the prime minister told him the driver of Tsvangirai's vehicle swerved to avoid the on-rushing truck, but a trailer attached to the truck hit the Land Cruiser, which rolled over three times. Makone said the vehicle was lying on its roof when he arrived.

Eddie Cross, the policy coordinator for the Movement for Democratic Change, said that when he heard about the crash he phoned Hendrick O'Neill, a party member who is from the area where it occurred. O'Neill, in turn, contacted Deon Theron, the vice president of the Commercial Farmers Union, who lives near the scene.

"I was looking for someone to get to the site because I was very suspicious about the circumstances around the accident," O'Neill said in a phone interview. "Morgan has been a target for some time."

Theron rushed to the scene and began to investigate, O'Neill said: "Just as he finished the police arrived and grabbed the video camera from him, started questioning him and took him into custody."

O'Neill said he spoke to Mr. Theron by cell phone as he was being arrested. "He told me the left front tire had burst and the vehicle was on its roof," Mr. O'Neill said. "He climbed on the vehicle. Some of the undercarriage was loose or broken. It could have been the result of the accident. That's what he was filming when they seized him."

Tsvangirai has been the victim of multiple assassination attempts. He fled the country after he outpolled Mugabe in March presidential elections, fearing for his life.

Forces loyal to Mugabe had begun a campaign of violence, attempting to intimidate the opposition prior to a June runoff election.

Tsvangirai ended up withdrawing before that second poll because of attacks on thousands of his supporters. When the international community concluded the election was neither free nor fair, protracted negotiations led to a coalition government, with Mugabe as president and Tsvangirai as prime minister.

Friday night, officials with Tsvangirai's party alternately expressed their suspicions of foul play but resisted reaching any conclusions. "This will certainly demand an independent investigation," Cross said. "We won't accept a police report."

The couple, married for more than three decades, has six children, including twins, aged 14.

"They were a team; they were very effective and extremely close," Mr. Cross said of the couple.

"She was very much a pillar of support, spiritually and in every other way. Morgan will feel her loss enormously. I can't think of many couples as close as those two."

Hier heb ik overheen gelezen.

Tsja. In de tijd van Rhodesië was het beter geregeld, maar toen vond de zwarte bevolking het weer oneerlijk dat de regering vol met blanke kolonisten zat. Als Afrika al het putje van de wereld is, is zimbabwe het deel waar alle vieze haren en zeepresten in blijven hangen. Als Zimbabwe voortvarend wordt kan ik rustig sterven, omdat ik dan weet dat er weer hoop is in deze wereld.

Mugabe Denounces Political Violence

"This amounts to US$1,061,29 billion. Government needs to swiftly raise this money to keep running," the memo says. "Failure to pay some of these obligations urgently would further weaken the country's credit rating in regional and international markets."

Only Australia, which does not belong to the G8, has promised US$10 million in aid over and above the humanitarian assistance to deal with water, sanitation and health services. However, US$10 million is a drop in the ocean given the needs.

To make the situation worse, government can no longer print money to meet its local obligations as the new Finance minister Tendai Biti is opposed to quasi-fiscal activities. The government used to meet its urgent financial obligations through printing money.

De cholera-epidemie die Zimbabwe al maanden teistert, lijkt over het hoogtepunt heen. Afgelopen week werden volgens de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) iets meer dan tweeduizend mensen ziek. Op het toppunt in februari kregen ruim achtduizend mensen per week cholera.

The few white farmers who are still on their land in Zimbabwe are unlikely to feel any more secure under the new all-inclusive government if President Robert Mugabe and his followers have their way.

The vexed question of land ownership is still at the forefront of Zimbabwean politics, with Mugabe and his prime minister, Morgan Tsvangirai, at odds over procedures, though evidently agree that British prime minister Gordon Brown should be pressed to "honour Britain's obligations" and fund land restitution.

Mugabe, ignoring the so-called global political agreement, GPA, reached with Tsvangirai's opposition Movement for Democratic Change, MDC, which calls for an end to land seizures, has vowed that they will continue.

Tsvangirai, by contrast, has demanded that land grabs be halted immediately and has called for an audit of the country's land to ascertain who owns what, to eliminate multiple ownership and ensure security of tenure for all farmers, black and white. Critics believe the land grab has benefited only the president's cronies and peasants who support Mugabe's ZANU-PF party.

Precies, want wanneer wordt Zimbabwe nou eens ingevallen?
Als er een dictator is op de wereld dan is het wel Mugabe, die heeft hele slachtpartijen op zijn geweten.

En een voorspelling: Mugabe zal nooit, maar dan ook daadwerkelijk nooit, de macht delen. Nooit.
