quote:Knock-out qualifying for IndyCar
IndyCar Series, St Petersburg, FLThe IndyCar Series will introduce a Formula One-style knock-out qualifying format for road and street courses this season, beginning at St Petersburg this weekend.
The series will continue to use single-car qualifying on ovals, but will run two group sessions for 20 minutes each on Saturday afternoons, with the fastest six cars from each progressing to the next stage. The rest of the cars will line up according to their times in the group sessions.
The remaining 12 cars will enter a 15-minute session with the quicker half advancing to the Fast Six Shootout, while seventh to 12th will fill those positions on the grid in order of their times from that session.
The final six cars will then have a 10-minute session to compete for pole position.
Indy Racing League president of operations Brian Barnhart is confident that the F1-style format will make qualifying more exciting for spectators.
"Qualifying for our road and street courses has been full of drama ever since we introduced the Fast Six concept in 2005," he said. "Expanding the group format into several stages will add to the intrigue and strategy and will keep fans entertained throughout."
quote:Kanaan penalized after all
Indy Racing League officials changed their minds Thursday and decided to penalize Tony Kanaan for disobeying race control instructions at the end of last weekend's IndyCar Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
IRL president Brian Barnhart said Kanaan, who was leading the Gainsco Indy 300, will be held out of the first 30 minutes of today's practice for not pulling out of the racing line prior to the restart with three laps to go. Kanaan had a damaged car after contact with rookie Ernesto Viso and was nursing it around the track to finish as high as possible.
Barnhart approved Kanaan's driving so long as he could keep up with the race's pace car. But when the race was about to restart and it was clear Kanaan couldn't maintain a competitive pace, Barnhart wanted the 2004 series champion to pull onto the track's deceleration lane as the field came to the green flag.
Kanaan chose to remain in the middle of the track as the cars came through the fourth turn. The scramble behind him created a dangerous situation.
Barnhart, who is in charge of all on-track activities, shared his disappointment with Kanaan.
"We were pretty upset with him," said Barnhart, who initially said there would be no penalty.
Kanaan denies being told to relinquish the spot. He felt he gave enough room for others to pass. As soon as it was clear the race would stay green, he said he got out of the way.
"I followed my team orders and stayed out to see what would happen," he said. "If the IRL had wanted to pull me in, they had plenty of time to do so (under caution).
"What if the race restarts and somebody crashes (in the back of the pack)? There's a yellow flag and I probably finish (higher). Points toward the championship are really important."
Kanaan finished eighth.
The series resumes this weekend with the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The race is at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
