Ben Haim left Bolton to join Chelsea
Manchester City have completed the signing of centre-back Tal Ben Haim from Chelsea for an undisclosed fee.

The Israeli joined Chelsea on a free transfer from Bolton in June 2007 but has left after failing to establish himself in the first-team set-up.

He has been allowed to leave by new Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari and has signed a four-year deal with City.

The 26-year-old's transfer is subject to him gaining a work permit, which should prove a formality.

Ben Haim has made regular appearances for his country, including two matches against England during qualifying for Euro 2008.

He is believed to have cost about £5m and is City's second summer signing after the arrival of Brazilian striker Jo for £18m from CSKA Moscow.

Ben Haim will be hoping for more first-team football at Eastlands after just 13 starts for Chelsea last season.

But, while he was competing with John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho and Alex at Stamford bridge, he will be battling for a central defensive berth with Richard Dunne and Micah Richards at City.

Hughes had hinted to a defensive signing as he recently said: "With so many games to play this season it is important to get the balance right.

"Last season the team was weakened when Micah Richards and Richard Dunne were not in it. We are trying to address that."

Following on from last night's 4-0 aggregate victory over EB/Streymur, the Blues now look set to face more opposition from Scandinavia as the draw for the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup takes places from noon today in Nyon.

Looking at the way the draw is set up, City are again seeded, this time in Group 1 of the Northern section and can only face one of five teams. Two from the Danish Superliga, two from the Swedish Allsvenskan and Finland's FC Honka.

Manchester City moet het tien weken stellen zonder Darius Vassell. Manager Mark Hughes is daardoor genoodzaakt het seizoen te beginnen met de onervaren tieners Daniel Sturridge and Chedwyn Evans.

Vassell heeft een knieblessure opgelopen. 'Hij zal zes weken lang een brace moeten dragen en heeft daarna nog een maand nodig om fit te worden', denkt coach Hughes. 'Dat is erg teleurstellend, want Darius was uitstekend in vorm tijdens de voorbereiding.'

Felipe Caicedo comes in to lead the line alongside Danny Sturridge tonight, a slightly surprising decision, maybe the hamstring injury Valeri Bojinov picked up on Saturday shortly after scoring his wonder goal was worse than first thought.

Elsewhere, Vedran Corluka returns to the City of Manchester Stadium following recent press speculation surrounding his future and despite a two-game suspension kicking in for skipper Richard Dunne at the weekend, he takes his place at the heart of the Blues' backline.

The match

It was an inauspicious start to proceedings within the first couple of minutes as the matchball wasn’t deemed fit enough to be used by our referee. So after a bit of standing around Elano decided to hammer the offending (flat) ball into the Colin Bell Stand and a new one found.

When the action did get underway it was the visitors with the first effort on goal after eight minutes. Striker George Florescu’s shot only troubled those in about row 28 of the North Stand.

After starting the better side, it was the Danish league leaders who took the lead in the 15th minute.

It might have appeared to be a shock on paper maybe, but not on the pitch as Danny Olsen drilled a great low strike from the edge of the box, which gave Hart no chance and Midtjylland a vital away goal

City attempted to up their game and almost drew level after Petrov wriggled his way through the box, but his lofted shot cleared the crossbar.

On 25 minutes the Blues threatened again lead from the back by Tal Ben Haim, he marched to the edge of the Danes penalty area before laying it off to Petrov, his fine delivery was met by Sturridge from 12-yards out but his volley only bounced into the floor and was cleared.

The Blues' influence on the game was growing and just short of the half hour mark Elano tricked his way past the left back before switching play for Petrov to unleash a first time vollyed cross-shot which brought about another City corner.

Moments later it was another half-chance for the home side. This time Gelson Fernandes won the ball in midfield and slipped in Sturridge, but the young talent could only drag a right footed shot from 20-yards wide of Heinze’s far post.

Referee Rafati had his notebook out for the first time to make a booking on 36 minutes after a typical striker's challenge by Florescu on Corluka. And the referee levelled it up within a minute as Corluka himself was booked for a pull on Borring.

Danny Sturridge produced the best moment of the half for City on 43 minutes as he jinked on to his left foot after taking Caicedo's flick-on and hammered a shot against the Danes bar - a similar strike to the goal he scored in the 2006 FA Youth Cup Final at the Stadium against Liverpool.

So after the early shock of going a goal down, City had done everything bar pull themselves level in the first half.

HALF TIME: City 0-1 FC Midtjylland

There were no changes at the break as City looked to get back in the tie.

And they started the second half the same way they ended the first…on the front foot.

Two more half-chances came and went within the opening five minutes. Petrov having the best of them with a volley that seemed to take an age to drop before the Bulgarian laced it over the bar.

Midtjylland made the first change of the game on 55 minutes with Nworuh making way for Babatunde Collins (no relation).

And still the pressure was put on the visitors, as Petrov first, then Elano attempted to breach the Danish defence before the 60 minute mark was reached.

Mark Hughes made his first substitute on 64 minutes, as the hot and cold Caicedo was replaced by Valeri Bojinov, fast becoming a crowd favourite at CoMS.

After a quiet opening to the second period, the visitors came back into the game with two swift chances of their own on 65 minutes, luckily a corner was the best their efforts received.

Etuhu replaced Elano with 20 minutes to go as Hughes hoped his pace could be a factor in breaking down Midtjylland in the final third of the pitch.

It was heart-in-mouth time on 71 minutes as Martin Petrov had to clear off the line following a corner from the visitors appeared to be flicked goalwards by Sturridge.

Michael Johnson was the latest player to try his luck after 76, his shot though was well fielded by Heinze.

And the keeper couldn't do anything but watch a minute later as Petrov's free-kick from the edge of the area thumped off his bar and away as City cranked it up for a final push.

But it was to be a frustrating end to the game as City failed to carve out any late chances and it could have been even worse if the referee had taken a different view of Johnson's use of his arms to shrug off an opponent.

In stoppage time Hart needed to make a vital save to deny Florescu what could have been a tie winning goal even at 'half time' in this qualifying tie.

So after playing most of the game attack against defence, City, twice denied by the bar couldn't break through and now face a tough trip to Denmark in two weeks’ time one goal down.

De ploeg van coach Mark Hughes had wel een fors veldoverwicht, maar wist dat niet in doelpunten uit te drukken. Zo knalde Daniel Sturridge voor rust op de lat, en raakte Martin Petrov na rust het aluminium met een vrije trap.

City ontsnapte in de slotfase aan een grotere nederlaag dankzij een knappe redding van doelman Joe Hart op een inzet van de doorgebroken George Florescu. Op donderdag 28 augustus moeten de Engelsen de achterstand wegpoetsen willen zij dit seizoen deelnemen aan de UEFA Cup.

Gabriel Agbonlahor was de blikvanger tijdens Aston Villa-Manchester City. De 21-jarige aanvaller scoorde drie keer binnen zeven minuten en leidde The Villans naar een 4-2 overwinning.

Hoewel er zes keer werd gescoord op Villa Park, stond het tijdens de rust nog 0-0. Kort na de hervatting opende John Carew de score met een kopbal na een voorzet van Ashley Young. Man City sloeg terug met de gelijkmaker van Elano vanaf de penaltystip.

Daarna was het de beurt aan Agbonlahor. In de 69ste minuut toonde de spits zich sterker dan Gelson Fernandes en schoot de 2-1 binnen. Gareth Barry was de aangever van de 3-1 en de 4-1, die eveneens op naam kwamen van Agbonlahor. In de slotminuut bepaalde Vedran Corluka de eindstand op 4-2.

Shaun Wright-Phillips is terug bij Manchester City. De kleine aanvaller ondertekende donderdag een vierjarig contract bij de club die hij drie jaar geleden verliet voor een avontuur bij Chelsea.

'Het mag duidelijk zijn, dat ik heel erg blij ben dat ik terug ben bij City. Ik kan niet wachten om weer aan de slag te gaan', vertelt SWP op de website van The Citizens. Ook coach Mark Hughes is tevreden. 'Ik heb hem altijd bewonderd. Sinds ik bij deze club ben, heb ik hem in het vizier gehad.'

Wright-Phillips is er tijdens drie seizoenen Chelsea niet in geslaagd uit te groeien tot een vaste waarde van The Blues. De 26-jarige international kwam dan wel 81 competitieduels in actie, maar acteerde slechts 43 keer als basisspeler.

Bij Man City maakte Wright-Phillips in 2000 zijn debuut en kwam hij tot een totaal van 154 wedstrijden en 26 doelpunten. Hij groeide er zelfs uit tot international, een status die hij op Stamford Bridge verloor. De negentienvoudig international kwam in februari 2008 voor het laatst uit voor Engeland.

Het is nog onduidelijk hoe veel Man City betaalt voor Wright-Phillips. In 2005 telde Chelsea nog ruim dertig miljoen euro neer voor de razendsnelle vleugelspeler, die nog tot medio 2010 onder contract stond bij de Londense club.

Manchester City is ontsnapt aan een blamage in de tweede voorronde van het UEFA Cup-toernooi. De Engelse club slaagde er in Denemarken in de opgelopen 1-0 achterstand tegen FC Midtjylland goed te maken.

De ploeg van coach Mark Hughes had twee weken geleden op eigen veld verloren. Maar ditmaal wonnen The Citizens wel, al was het op miraculeuze wijze. In de laatste minuut schoot Danny Califf de bal in eigen doel: 0-1.

De Amerikaan hielp zo onbedoeld de opnieuw slecht spelende Engelsen, die wel een paar kansen hadden gehad maar allesbehalve overtuigden. OOk niet in de verlenging.

In de penaltyserie was doelman Joe Hart echter de held, door inzetten van Jonas Borring (foto) en Kolja Afriyie te keren en zo City aan een 4-2 winst in de strafschoppenreeks te helpen.

Pablo Zabaleta heeft donderdag zijn laatste training voor Espanyol afgewerkt. De Argentijnse verdediger heeft vrijdag afscheid genomen bij de Spaanse club en zal in de komende uren naar Engeland afreizen om zijn transfer naar Manchester City af te ronden, zo meldt Espanyol vrijdagmiddag op de officiële website. De Engelse club maakte de Catalanen donderdagavond laat duidelijk aan de afkoopsom van acht miljoen euro te willen voldoen. Ondanks de verwoede pogingen van Espanyol om de gouden medaillewinnaar langer in de Spaanse metropool te houden gaf Zabaleta aan zijn carrière in het City of Manchester Stadium voort te willen zetten.

"Ik wil iedereen die bij Espanyol betrokken is graag bedanken", laat de 23-jarige international, die ook als middenvelder kan spelen, op de clubsite weten. "Het is allemaal heel erg snel gegaan. Ik heb de afgelopen drie jaar onvergetelijke momenten meegemaakt. Dat zal ik niet snel vergeten. Ik hoop ooit nog terug te keren."

Zabaleta kwam in de zomer van 2005 over van San Lorenzo de Almagro en speelde sindsdien 80 ontmoetingen in de Primera División. De zesvoudig international werd de afgelopen weken aan diverse formaties uit de Serie A gelinkt, maar alleen de belangstelling van Manchester City bleek concreet.

Overigens lijkt ook Albert Riera bij Los Periquitos te vertrekken. De buitenspeler was vrijdag niet aanwezig op de training en is naar verluidt naar Liverpool gevlogen om bij de plaatselijke FC een medische keuring te ondergaan. Met de transfer van het voormalige Ajax-doelwit is ongeveer twaalf miljoen euro gemoeid.

Pre match news

There are four changes to the side that started our last league game, with Dunne, Hamann, Jo and, of course, Shaun Wright-Philips coming in for Ben Haim, Elano, Petrov and Sturridge. Jo makes his Premier League bow after two UEFA Cup appearances that were separated by his appearances for Brazil in the Olympics, Martin Petrov has a slight knock, Richard Dunne makes his first league appearance of the season after a two-game ban, and Wright-Phillips starts for City for the first time since May 2005.

The Match

The prodigal son got a huge ovation from our fans when the teams were announced before kick-off, serenading him with ‘Once a blue, always a blue’, making for a fantastic atmosphere when combined with Sunderland’s usual noisy support.

Phil Bardsley drilled the day’s first shot City’s left hand-post on seven minutes, and two minutes later Cisse’s cute backheel allowed Chimbonda to whip in a cross that missed everybody. Wright-Phillips then announced himself with a couple of trademark jinking runs that had the home defence worried.

Jo was leading the line up front, but on 20 minutes he did well to hold off Chimbonda down the left flank and chip the ball over. Ireland laid it off to Kompany, who smashed his shot straight at a Sunderland defender to round off our best move of the match so far.

Richards and Kompany went into the book just after half-hour, but the referee merely had a word with Cisse after he tried to win a free kick in a challenge with Ball. The atmosphere got livelier a few minutes later when Malbranque went to ground after trying to go past Dunne, the home fans not getting the caution they were baying for. The same thing happened on 40 minutes, when Leadbitter hit the deck just in front of City’s area, play going down to the other end while Roy Keane protested in the ‘strongest terms’ to the fourth official.

Dunne and Hart combined well to keep it at 0-0 on 42 minutes, the skipper hooking a Cisse header away from goal before the keeper punch the ball to safety, barging Micah Richards out of the way in the process.

City’s game of patience paid off perfectly on the stroke of half-time. Hamann laid off to Johnson, whose cross was turned by Danny Collins straight into the path of Stephen Ireland, whose first-time shot from close-range clipped Gordon’s hand on the way into the corner of the net. Hart & Richards’ collision was serious enough to see the defender replaced by Ben Haim after the break. The Blues carried on in an attacking vein, Wright-Phillips’s dangerous cross nearly found Jo but was smothered by Gordon.

But that pair then combined on 50 minutes to seal the dream comeback for Shaun Wright-Phillips! A free kick found it’s way over to the Brazilian, who threaded the ball through a crowded box right into SWP’s path, and from two yards out he could not miss. To make it even better, his first goal for City since Villa Park in May 2005 came right in front of his adoring City fans in the away section.

And the dream became Sunderland’s nightmare on 58 minutes when SWP added a second! Ball’s chip over the top drew Gordon a long way out of his goal, and Wright-Phillips deftly guided the ball in, first-time, with the outside of his right foot.

The Blues were comfortable now, and the home side had their keeper to thank for the score staying at 3-0 to City on 72 minutes, the Scot making a brilliant save from Michael Johnson’s backheeled flick.

The home fans headed for the exits from as early as 75 minutes, and Wright-Phillips also left the arena early, replaced by Elano with five minutes left and earning a deserved standing ovation from City’s fans.

David Healy got a shot in on target that drew ironic cheers from all round the ground, and City played out time playing keep-ball to cap a great afternoon and make the long trip home a real pleasure.
