Denk er om dat dat leuk is! Een nieuwe GP met waarschijnlijk een heel leuk bijprogramma om toeschouwers te trekken. Midden in een stad als het mooie Valencia is natuurlijk ook hartstikke leuk. Ik denk dat deze GP 1 van de leukste op de kalender zal worden.

Dat verwacht ik dus ook. Al helpt het dat Valencia ook een leuke stad schijnt te zijn. Buiten dat wilde ik ook graag een keer naar een stratencircuit. En dan is dit de dichtsbijzijnde na Monaco. Nou heeft Monaco dan wel een meer een sfeer van glitter en glamour, qua race is het meestal toch minder. Al is het hier natuurlijk ook afwachten, maar de kans op een leuke race lijkt mij groter. En het is natuurlijk ook leuk om bij de eerste editie van een GP te zijn.

Dat sowieso. Of je nou op Spa of Indianapolis bent, de sfeer is er geweldig. Mensen die niks hebben met F1 vinden het ook fantastisch om mee te maken. Ik denk dat ik Valencia mooier vind. Narain Karthikeyan's manager has hit out at Spyker's decision to run Sakon Yamamoto for the remaining seven races of 2007.

Karthikeyan, currently an occasional Williams test driver, was touted as a favourite for the race seat following Christijan Albers' departure due to a defaulting sponsor.

The Indian's test colleague at Honda, Christian Klien, was also in the running, and he even tested the Spyker at Spa Francorchamps.

But although 30-year-old Karthikeyan was promising to bring sponsors to Silverstone based Spyker, he could not compete with Yamamoto's late bid with an estimated (US) $22m.


"Spyker decided to go for a driver who brought in money rather than professional ability," Karthikeyan's agent, Mark Perkins, told the Press Trust of India.

He explained that Karthikeyan's negotiations with Spyker did not advance far enough to discuss the financial aspects.

Perkins added: "But obviously the team decided that Yamamoto's offer was too significant to ignore."

Renault boss Flavio Briatore slammed McLaren's spy hearing let-off as baffling yesterday and insisted they should have been punished.

The playboy leader of the F1 world champions compared the FIA's decision to the one made when Pontius Pilate bowed to public pressure and washed his hands of the decision to crucify Jesus.

His comments came on a day of an explosive new development as a former Ferrari driver revealed the legendary Maranello team routinely spied on McLaren.

Finn Mika Salo said he was given written transcripts of all radio conversations between rival Mika Hakkinen and his engineer.

"When I was driving for Ferrari we always spied on McLaren, listening to their radio," said Salo, who deputised for Michael Schumacher when the German broke his leg in 1999.

On Thursday motor sport's highest body, the World Council, ruled the championship leaders were guilty of being in illegal possession of Ferrari secrets but decided to take no action because there was not enough evidence they benefitted from it.

"I don't understand what happened," said Briatore.

"To begin with you would only gather the World Council if you had proof. If you don't have proof, you avoid such a meeting.

"If the FIA have established McLaren had possession of Ferrari material then why is there no retribution? This verdict reminds me of Pontius Pilate."

Briatore said the month-long spy saga had tarnished the sport's reputation.

"Over the last few weeks we've all heard and read what happened," he said.

"Surely this story has been very damaging for the business of Formula One, especially considering the great media exposure it has had.

"If someone had some advantage from the possession of the material, it would have been fair for him to pay the consequences.

"Besides, I too would have liked to know secrets like the weight distribution of Ferrari's car." McLaren have been warned they could face a two-year ban if a new probe by Ferrari uncovers fresh evidence. Championship leader Lewis Hamilton breathed a massive sigh of relief when he learned the news while working for sponsors Vodafone at Goodwood but must race for the rest of the season under a cloud.

While Italian Luigi Macaluso, a member of the 25-man decision-making body, said McLaren's offence was worse than Juventus' role in Italy's match-fixing scandal last year. "I was the only one that tried to explain that McLaren was guilty," he said. "For me they are guilty and that's that. Juve were demoted to Serie B for a lot less."

Ferrari boss Jean Todt stormed out of the FIA HQ in Paris slating the decision as "incomprehensible" and said it legitimised cheating. "I spoke on the phone with Todt, and he sounded very bitter," said Briatore.

But claims by former driver Salo that Ferrari routinely spied on their biggest rivals has put a new complexion on Maranello's indignation over McLaren's spying allegations. "After every practice session I had in front of me, on paper, all the discussions Mika Hakkinen had had with his engineer," said Salo.

Triple champion Sir Jackie Stewart defended McLaren and said: "If an individual is operating independently, it is right that such clandestine behaviour should be punished on an individual basis."
