9 October will forever go down in my mind, I think. Yesterday I was able to witness two of the world's leading progressive metal bands: Symphony X and Dream Theater. It was a good thing I arrived early, because Symphony X's set started about 20 minutes too early (and was 20 minutes too short as well for my liking.)

The band's sound was a legitimate disaster (who the fuck distorted your guitar that bad, Mike), but the band was in top form as they plowed through..a stunning amount of four songs (five if you count Oculus ex Inferni, the intro.) Russell Allen is a big showman live, constantly headbanging and engaging the crowd (and he got a great response, it has to be said.) People were giving him the horns, clapping, all the time. Once he expected applause and the crowd kept going and he was like "O_o"

He also had some nice stage antics, apart from the usual, during Domination he took a bottle from the audience with water in it, drunk a gulp, swallowed half of a line and went on. Pretty funny.

Symphony X's set was as follows:

Serpent's Kiss
The Odyssey

Then a short interlude followed, with what sounded like a string tribute to Dream Theater. At 9 pm ish, the intro notes of Also Sprach Zarathustra filled the hall. The traffic light at the top sprung to yellow. Slowly but surely, the drapery fell and Rudess and Portnoy took the stage, playing the last notes of the intro, and boom!, as it faded, they ran straight into the thrash metal monster from the new album known as Constant Motion.

I don't think the crowd ever let go after that. Song after song, the crowd was absolutely enthralled. Every 4/4 bit got a major horned response. There was clapping all the fucking time. Singing along. After Constant Motion, James remarked: "We've been coming here for fifteen years now and the Netherlands has never fucking let us down. We're going to be staying here a little while, and that's all that fucking matters, right? This is from Scenes!"

After which the band rolled into Strange Deja Vu and the crowd went absolutely nuts again. The band was stoked to play, you could see it off their faces, Petrucci looked really happy, Jordan was animated, Portnoy kept inspiring the audience, and James was on top form (although the hall made his notes sound an octave too high at points, but whatever.)

We also got Blind Faith, which was kind of meh as a setlist pawn, but the band was enthusiastic and even that song got a great response from the crowd: the band could do no wrong.

Other absolute highlights were the extended version of Surrounded, The Dark Eternal Night, and the dual finisher combo of The Ministry of Lost Souls and In The Presence of Enemies. You could see the band loved playing their new songs live,and what was more stunning, the crowd loved hearing them. Especially the bit with "dark master of sin, I wll fight for you" and the crowd chant were activel and enthusiastically sung along. The boys on stage must have been happy. I know I was.

Then the band went off stage and it was time for the encore, the infamous Schmedley Wilcox. After some good melodic playing and James LaBrie humorously adapting the lyrics of Trial of Tears to "It's raining on the streets of Rotterdam" (may I add that it was actually raining afterwards!), the band ran into the best section of Finally Free, the gunshot bit, and played the boring part of Learning To Live, the best part of In The Name of God (including the synchronised solo), and they climaxed with Razor's Edge. They might as well have played one or two of these songs in their entirety, but in the end it didn't even matter as every note was flawlessly received by the audience. Portnoy remarked that it was "Fucking beautiful." He also wore a Dutch national team jersey, NFL style, for the encore. Apparently the band knows how huge its Dutch fanbase is. They left the stage to huge applause. They deserved it. And yeah, James, if you boys keep rocking our socks like this: I don't think you will be disappointed by Dutch audiences anytime soon. You're welcome.

Ik hoopte van tevoren echt dat Symphony X the Odyssey zou spelen.. en warempel Vond de toetsenist van SX trouwens wel een beetje laf.. maarja hij komt in de muziek ook niet zoveel naar voren. Dream Theater was alsvanouds goed. Het is leuk hoe bij een concert veel nummers toch wat meer gaan leven.. ik kan In the presence of enemies en Ministry of lost souls nu een stuk beter waarderen dan voorheen.

Verder vond ik het erg vet dat JR zoveel aan bod kwam. Ik weet niet meer bij welk nummer dat was, maar hoe hij op een gegeven moment uit z'n dak ging op z'n continuum . Vond z'n draaiende setup ook erg vet. Met 1 keyboard was het leuk.. nu was het echt extra vet En ja de solo die hij had met z'n 'gitaar'keyboard was natuurlijk de slagroom op de taart (ofzoiets).. het was vooral een hoop herrie, maar het was gewoon vet om hem zo te zien

En James LaBrie was ook prima, op z'n gewone uitspattingen na (zinnen zo overdreven brengen dat het net twee losse zinnen lijken etc.). Maar heb me niet aan hem gestoord

Vond MP z'n Nederlands elftal shirt ook erg lache trouwens
