Inderdaad, het heeft met de aerodynamica te maken. De dimples verstoren de luchtlaag vlak om het balletje (de zgn grenslaag of boundary layer). Het effect daarvan is dat de lucht iets verder van het oppervlak af, langer netjes om het balletje heen stroomt (als het ware meer om het balletje heen buigt). Ditzelfde effect wordt bereikt door de strips die schaatsers op hun schaatspakken (op het hoofd) hebben zitten. De grenslaag wordt verstoord, de lucht gaat mooier om het lichaam heen, en de weerstand wordt kleiner. Vandaar dus ook deze vervolgvraag
