Cannavaro delays Napoli return

Fabio Cannavaro has revealed that he won’t ponder a return to Napoli until he’s had at least one more go at winning the Champions League.

The Neapolitan has never hidden the fact that he would love to return to the club he served at the start of his career, with some fans dreaming of an imminent reunion following Serie A promotion on Sunday.

Although Cannavaro’s agent has again confirmed his client’s desire to head home, an imminent summer switch away from Real Madrid isn’t on the horizon.

“It’s still not the right time for Fabio to return to Naples,” noted Gaetano Fedele on Monday evening.

“I won’t exclude the fact that it may happen in the future, but it is pure fantasy football right now,” he continued.

“Fabio wants to win the Champions League seeing as he has yet to triumph in that competition – and Real Madrid can offer him this possibility.

“Everybody knows that his dream is to end his career in his own city, but it’s not ideal to be talking about such things in what is a decisive week for Real.”

The Spanish giants, who signed Cannavaro from Juventus last summer, are just three points away from winning the Liga title.

Cannavaro, whose brother Paolo already plays for the Azzurri, spent four years in the Napoli first team squad before joining Parma in 1995.

The 33-year-old Italian captain and current Golden Ball winner is contracted to Real Madrid until June 30, 2008.

Real Madrid, bossed by Cannavaro fan Fabio Capello, reached the last 16 of the Champions League this season but were defeated by Bayern Munich.
