Liverpool Football Club are delighted to announce that Robbie Fowler has rejoined the club on a free transfer from Manchester City until the end of the season when the situation will be reviewed.
Fowler, 30, completed the formalities of what is a sensational move this afternoon.
The Manchester City striker is ineligible to play in Sunday's FA Cup tie against Portsmouth but could make an emotional reappearance in front of the Kop against Birmingham City on Wednesday.
quote:27 January: GOD IS BACK by Gerry
I can’t believe it, I just can’t fucking believe it, Robbie’s back, Robbie‘s fucking back. I heard the rumours just like everyone else but they were just like the same rumours we heard last year and just like then I didn’t dare believe that they could be true. So as I sat in my car on my way home from work in the normal Friday evening traffic jam and the news came over the radio, I just screamed and screamed like a madman. I just didn’t see it coming and even now a couple of hours later it still seems a little unreal but it is real, GOD IS BACK.
With all due respect to Michael Owen, this is bigger news then the return of the Saint, this is the return of God. Fowler was forced out by Houllier and never wanted to leave the club and he has made no secret of that. In his recent biography he said that he had unfinished business at Liverpool and one day would love to have the chance to return and now somehow its happened and he has returned to his spiritual home.
I don’t know a single Liverpool fan in the world that doesn’t love Robbie. I’ve been watching football since the early 70’s and can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is the greatest natural finisher I have ever seen bar none. His goal-scoring record for us of 171 goals in 330 games makes pretty good reading too. I heard some idiot on the radio saying that he was just a bit worried that with all the injuries Robbie has suffered in recent years, he might have lost a bit of pace but pace was never one of Fowler’s greatest assets to begin with. No, Fowlers two greatest assets are his predatory instinct and his finishing ability, in those departments he is second to none and fortunately they are two things that once you have, you never lose. But enough of me rabbiting on, Rafa summed it all up in his interview with the official site after the signing when he said,
"My idea is for Liverpool to take one step forward and I think Robbie can help us make that step.
"We have signed a player with so much passion for this football club and I think he will act as an example to every player here in how much he loves Liverpool.
"It is a boost for the team, a boost for the supporters and a boost for Robbie himself. I'm not sure I've ever seen a player quite so happy to be joining a club before."
"Robbie is a great finisher who can help us reach a new level. He hasn't been signed because he loves the club; he's been signed because he's one of the best goalscorers ever to play in the Premiership and he can score goals for us right now,"
"He's got a wealth of experience and he gives us more attacking options. He's a different kind of striker to what we have at the club and that is good for the team.
"People can talk about having a lot of money to buy players but we've just signed a player with a passion and a heart for this club that no amount of money can buy.
"We are close to a very high level right now but with Robbie we can go even higher."
Wise words from Rafa and a very wise move too, its only going to cost us Fowler‘s wages but if it comes off it could prove to be a masterstroke and one of our greatest signings of all time. If we can keep Fowler fit, he would form one hell of a partnership with Crouch and I have absolutely no doubt that if we create the chances there’s no better man then Robbie to put them away. I think this move will spell the end of the road for Cisse but to be honest, who cares?
I’m absolutely delighted to see Robbie back and I’m looking forward to seeing him back in the Red shirt again, can you imagine what the crowd will be like in his first game back at Anfield? Thank you Rafa for making this happen, thank you Stuart Pearce for not standing in his way and thank you GOD and welcome home, the place just hasn’t been the same without you.
