A strong and shallow earthquake registered by Geoscience Australia as M7.0 hit southeast of New Caledonia at 00:42 UTC on October 31, 2017. The agency is reporting a depth of 17 km (10.6 miles). USGS is reporting M6.8 at a depth of 11.1 km (6.9 miles), EMSC M6.7 at a depth of 20 km (12.4 miles).
According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 137.2 km (85.3 miles) E of Tadine (population 7 492), 217.4 km (135.1 miles) ESE of Wť (population 10 375), and 280.4 km (174.3 miles) ENE of Mont-Dore (population 24 680), New Caledonia.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles). Some 52 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.
Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, PTWC said 00:47 UTC.
However, small tsunami waves have been observed, it said 01:42 UTC. 9 cm (3.5 inches) amplitude at Lifou, 13 cm (5.1 inches) at Mare, New Caledonia, and 10 cm (3.9 inches) at Lenakel, Vanuatu.
"Persons along coastal areas near the earthquake should be observant and exercise normal caution. Otherwise, no action is required," the center added.
