In the wake of Clarke annihilating nearly everyone in Mt. Weather and then basically abandoning her people, The 100 will kick off season 3 with a time jump.
“We are going to have our first time jump between seasons,” Jason Rothenberg told fans at Comic-Con on Friday. “We’re going to pick things up a couple months after Clarke bailed on her people.”
In the season finale, Clarke was forced to kill men, women and children inside Mt. Weather in a bid to save her people—and even then, the Grounders abandoned them in a cutthroat deal with the Mountain Men to get their own people back. Who needs Grounder blood infusions when the Sky People’s bone marrow is like gold?
But the sacrifices she made, including mercy killing Finn (Thomas McDonnell), grew to be too much to handle, so Clarke bid farewell to her people and walked off into the woods. “What she did at the end of the season was so huge and traumatic,” Taylor said. “She’s running away, which is very un-Clarke-like. When we pick things up, I think she’s going to be losing it a little… She’s not dealing with it particularly well.”
In her absence, Bellamy (Bob Morley) will be “forced to step up in that position to look after the 44 on his own,” Morley says. “Clarke left him there to do that, so I assume he’ll do what Clarke wouldn’t do and become the leader.” This, of course, puts a damper on any potential Clarke and Bellamy romance for the time being. “They were a good team, but romantically not so much,” Morley said. “Clarke gave Bellamy the confidence to make decisions and to trust him. He doesn’t trust himself to be able to do that without her.”
“I don’t think I’m thinking about anyone at this point,” Taylor added. And that includes Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey), who will return in the third season. “When they come together for the first time, there will be fireworks in a way we’ve never seen before because Clarke is pissed,” Rothenberg said, adding that the show will be diving deeper into the Grounder world and mythology next season. “There’s a lot of bad blood on certain levels, but when we come back, the war is not on and the tension has been released slightly, but that won’t last for very long.”
Speaking of, Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos) faces an uphill battle in returning to Camp Jaha after being abandoned by the Grounders. “Octavia hasn’t really fit in anywhere growing up under the floor,” Avgeropoulos said. “Through Lincoln [Ricky Whittle], she really found her place within the world with the Grounders and they really brought out the warrior in her. I think she’ll have a hard time going back to [Camp Jaha] and have some resentment toward them.”
But she won’t be the only angsty 100 in Camp Jaha. Not only is everyone dealing with a level of PTSD, but Raven (Lindsey Morgan) is actually “worse off” in the new season. “Emotionally, she’s really living her life without Finn and living with that grief. There’s someone new in her life and that’s a whole new obstacle for her. You’re going to see a whole new Raven. She’s changed and she’s trying to rebuild herself piece by piece.”
Elsewhere on earth, the new storyline with Jaha (Isaiah Washington) discovering the mansion and the mysterious A.I,. who appears to have nefarious goals, will play a big role in the third season. “The [A.I.] story really sets us in a new much more science fiction direction,” Rothenberg said. “We started the show as a real hardcore sci-fi show in space. Obviously we lost that and I really missed that. This lets us get back to the hardcore sci-fi.”
The 100 is slated to return midseason on The CW.
