Deliverance (1972) is a movie you watch with mixed emotions. Breathtaking scenes of action down the rapids, and horror when the city dweller men are confronted by the local, inbred, hillbillies. One of the most memorable and uplifting moments in Deliverance is the banjo competition between the character, Drew, and a young hillbilly, Lonnie (Billy Redden). Redden was chosen for his unusual features but it is said that otherwise he is nothing like the inbred youth, Lonnie, that he portrayed. I also read that Lonnie/Redden did not actually play the banjo but an expert reached around him. Watching carefully, it seems so. Fancy that! What do you think of this movie and this music?
