I had a great travel year - I went to Norway, of course, for three weeks last July of 2010 - was up in Troms and Nordland. Then, over Thanksgiving I went to Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca.
Over xmas, I went to Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaruagua. The ruins at Tikal and Copan are fantastic, and both the colonial cities of Antigua, Guatemala, and Granada, Nicaragua are also excellent. I have now "completed" Central America, but wouldn't mind going back sometime to see more.
I will be going to Norway again on July 1 and returning on July 24. I will be finishing the county of Nordland. There are 430 kommuner in Norge and I intend to visit each and every one of them, and after this trip I will have completed visits to all the ones in Finnmark, Troms, and Nordland Fylker or counties - many of which are islands with no air strips - it has been great fun. I will be in the southern part of Norway the week of July 18th to the 24th if you are in the "neighborhood" and had the possibility to meet up and enjoy some $10 beers and $10 gas!!
My house is up for sale, and depending how that goes, my travel plans will be shaped. As I have been to nearly every political entity in the western hemisphere, except Cuba and a few places in South America, I was actually looking at going to Uruguay and Paraguay over either Thanksgiving or Christmas. I am also looking at the Galapagos. But, if you guys are going to be in Montevideo over New Year's, we should seriously plan to meet up!! If my house sells this year, I have a 9 month around the world adventure sketched out that I would like to start at the end of April 2012 and complete in January 2013. If there is a delay in the house sale, then I will just do some lesser trips and wait until the spring of 2013. The point is that I think I have a good handle on climate/weather patterns and have this in mind:
Late April: get to LAX and onward to Papeete, Tahiti
May - spend 30 days (no visa thus needed) and explore the remaining parts of French Polynesia I have not yet seen - a trip to the Gambiers, a return visit to the Australs, but a different island (I've been to Tubai)- visit a couple of the Tuamotus (I've been to Rangiroa), and then visit Huahine, Raitea, and Maupiti in the Society Islands (have already done Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora) (I already did the Marquesas so don't plan to visit this 5th French Polynesian Archopelago on this jaunt).
June - return for 5th or 6th visit to the Cook Islands and visit a couple of the 15 islands I've not yet seen - then head towards Samoa
July - Samoa and try to catch the freighter to Tokelau (one of 4 political entities in the Pacific I have not yet reached - there is no airstrip to the 3 low lying atolls that comprise this country)
August - explore parts of the 700 plus !! islands of Fiji I have not yet seen (specifically Yasawa and Mamanuca groups) and try to get to the Solomons and Nauru (two more places I have missed - the only other in the Pacific being Pitcairn)
I choose these months as it is the dry season then in the South Pacific.
Late August - September - drive the entire east coast of Australia (this will be my 4th visit to the great land of OZ!) The first time I was in Australia was in September of 1987 and the weather was excellent!
October - do Southeast Asia - specifically Angkor Watt in Cambodia, and visit Viet Nam and Laos. Will also try to visit Singapore and Malaysia and maybe somewhere in Indonesia, depending on the political climate. If time permits, I would like to revisit Thailand, and check out some islands I missed the first time.
November - the Indian Subcontinent - India and Nepal (apparently avoiding the monsoon season) I want to see the Taj Mahal
December - Indian Ocean Islands - Seychelles and Maldives and then into South Africa - I want to see Victoria Falls
January - back to South America and visit any places I may not yet have been - if the house sells quickly and I know for a fact that I will be going around the world in 2012, I may go to Norway over New Year's instead to ski and so that I maintain my unbroken streak of visits every year since 1986 - BUT, I may still consider doing Uruguay and then Norway in early January as well.
I set this out so that you can keep this in mind if the opportunity were to arise for you or your brother to join in part of this grand adventure. The best year of my life, without a doubt, was in 1987 when I went around the world for 6 months in the other direction covering Scandinavia, the USSR (via TransSiberian RR), Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Samoa, and Hawaii. I've been exploring ever since.

Once I am free of owning property, I will most likely move my stuff down to Albuquerque, but may not buy anything in the short term. I may continue to help the firm here in Wisconsin for a few months a year and just stay in an extended stay hotel. The long term plan after the big trip is to split my year in three - New Mexico, Norway, and the South Pacific to include Australia and various islands as well as Hawaii - there are lots of short term rental opportunities in all these places.
Thanks again for the email - and please do send your snail mail address and more about your Uruguay plans as they formulate - I was also interested in visiting the wine areas of northern Argentina and would not mind going back to Buenos Aires - have been there twice before. I have NOT been to the Channel Islands but did have fun taking the boat from Plymouth to Cherbourg right after the last time I saw you.
