knifing friends in the back, off loading decisions, dodging responsibility and pushing their luck!

this just in:

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - As it did last season, FOX will air the season premiere of its thriller "24" commercial-free.

The series, returning for its third season, is scheduled to debut at 9 p.m. ET Tuesday, Oct. 28, the network announced Thursday (July 17) at the TV Critics Association press tour. Ford is sponsoring the debut -- as was the case last fall -- and will air an extended ad piece at the beginning and end of the episode.

The network is planning a big promotional push for the Emmy-nominated series. A four-minute trailer for the coming season will air during FOX's showing of the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" on Sunday, Sept. 7. A version of the teaser will also air in movie theaters in October.

Gail Berman, president of FOX Entertainment, also dropped a few hints about what viewers can expect in Season 3 of "24." She wouldn't reveal the crisis that drives the plot, but she did offer some details about the status of people affected in the cliffhanger finale of Season 2.
As previously reported, the show will jump three years into the future. Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), who's back working at the government's Counter-Terrorism Unit, will have a partner. Bauer's daughter Kim (Elisha Cuthbert) is also working at CTU.

Dennis Haysbert will be back, which would appear to mean that President Palmer survived the biological attack that felled him in last season's finale. The timeline of the show would put Palmer in the middle of a re-election campaign, something Berman says is probably a safe bet.

I love it when a plan comes together !

Tuned In: Plot thickens on '24'
Friday, July 18, 2003

By Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV Editor

HOLLYWOOD -- Fox drama "24" received 10 Emmy nominations yesterday, including outstanding drama series and lead actor in a drama for series star Kiefer Sutherland, who learned of his nomination while in a car on the way to meet the press.

"We really focused on wanting the show to get nominated," Sutherland said. "When I won the Golden Globe, it really did come as a shock to me. I remember looking out in the audience and seeing people I want to work with someday. You put that in your pocket as a really nice moment and move on."

Sutherland said he's gotten in trouble discussing upcoming plot turns on "24," so he was fairly tight-lipped about the new season.

"Jack is dealing with a huge conflict at the outset," Sutherland said, indicating the concept of moles will return to the show. "This season really does turn on itself a lot. The second season did not as much. This season really goes back to the first season. It gets back to a real espionage feel."

"24" will have its third season premiere Oct. 28 and, like last year, it will air commercial-free and will be sponsored by Ford.

Executive producer Robert Cochran said the new season will be set two-and-a-half years after the conclusion of season two and will begin the 24-hour real-time story in the early afternoon (season one began at midnight, season two at 8 a.m.).

He said hints planted at the end of season two may or may not come to fruition.

The guy on the boat? Cochran doesn't know if he'll play a role. Mandy (Mia Kirshner), who blew up a jetliner in season one and poisoned the president in season two? Ditto. What about the threat Marie (Laura Harris) made to her sister (Sarah Wynter)? It won't play out early in the season at least.

"We know we can use that stuff or not as we please," Cochran said, acknowledging there was no particular plan in place when the season finale was written. "We had all we could to do the season we were doing without trying to figure out this season. We know we can take things and weave them in if we need to but if we don't need to, we won't."

Did President Palmer (Dennis Hasybert) survive? "I know, but I can't say," Cochran teased. And his manipulative wife, played by Penny Johnson Jerald, did she go to jail and will she get out for good behavior? Jerald is not yet signed, but she could return.

"Everybody wants to know that and so does Penny," Jerald said earlier this month. "I really am an unemployed actress at the moment. I can't promise anybody I'll sit around and wait for them, but I really would like to continue playing Sherry."

"We think of ourselves as completely story driven," Cochran said. "When we think of a good story, if it means somebody has to die, they die. If it means we have to bring in a new character, we bring in a new character."

What about CTU operative Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard)? "I can feel that slippery slope happening," Cochran said, hestitating at confirming any other casting decisions. "I'm starting right down the slope."

This much he would confirm: Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) is back, as is Kim Bauer (Elisha Cuthbert), a character viewers love to loathe.

"How do you get that character into the main story? Kidnapping worked great but we did that on year one, but how do you do that in year two or any other year?" Cochran said. "We think we came up with something this year that may solve the dilemma."

Cochran said the CTU headquarters has been repaired and this year there's another "tentpole mission, comparable to stopping the assassin or finding the bomb, that Jack and his colleagues will be focused on, but of course I won't say what that is."

At least one new character, a young CTU agent named Chase, will be added. And, inevitably, Fox's promos are sure to spoil the show as they did last season, giving away upcoming plot twists.

ARGH!

Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) will be his own master, running a CTU field operations unit. Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard) has assumed control of CTU's Los Angeles headquarters, and he and Jack have their individual spheres of influence that could put them at cross-purposes.

The relationship between Tony and Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) has progressed and feeds into a theme of the season: How do you reconcile the work you do with your ability to have a relationship?

Set 2 1/2 years after the previous season, Kate Warner (Sarah Wynter) is back in the first episode. "She and Jack had a relationship and it didn't work out, in large part because of his work," Gordon said.

Being in a sorority in college didn't work out for Kim Bauer (Elisha Cuthbert), who "might have a job," Gordon said. It won't be in CTU, but it will tie her more into this year's plot.

"It's a much more complex story than anything we've ever done before," Gordon said. "It really has layers and layers. We thought long and hard about what happened between last season and this season." A strong antagonist that viewers have not seen before has been on Jack's radar the past two years and will be introduced almost immediately. And yes, President Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), last seen on the receiving end of a poisonous handshake, is alive, although whether he remains President of the United States, Gordon would not say.

"He's back, but we're not sure in what capacity," Gordon hinted. "He's diminished and may not be entirely himself. He's older and more jaded and his trust level has diminished considerably."

After two attempts on his life, that only makes sense.

When 24 returns this fall, Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) should be a bit rested. The third season of the Fox thriller, which premieres commercial-free on Oct. 28, takes place 2½ years after the end of Season 2., when Jack's actions averted a war in the Middle East. (Fans who want to be surprised should stop here.)

The action starts immediately, as Jack is pursuing an antagonist he's been tracking for two years. Jack is still a counterterrorism agent, but he's not under the authority of his old CTU unit, now headed by Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard).

Jack has a protégé (Badge Dale), whose traits, including a reckless bent, remind Jack of himself. Work, however, has derailed his relationship with Kate Warner (Sarah Wynter), who's only scheduled for a brief appearance.

An older, more jaded David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) has survived a poisonous handshake, but he may be in a diminished capacity, and it's not clear if he will still be president, executive producer Howard Gordon said.

Kim Bauer, the bane of some fans for her misadventures, will be back, although producers say she'll have a job, will be more mature and will be better connected to the main story.

"She won't be chased by bears," executive producer Joel Surnow said, recalling a wilderness mishap.

However, producers don't have immediate plans to bring back presidential ex-wife Sherry (Penny Johnson Jerald), a fan favorite.

"We love her," Gordon said. "We are always looking for a way to reintroduce her to the story."

"24" Get New Blood

It's that time of year when waiters dust off their head shots for the casting agents busy staffing TV series for the upcoming TV season. The 2003-04 season is no different, with several newbies--as well as some veteran actors--landing some plum gigs on Emmy-winning series The West Wing and 24.

At least four thesps have joined Fox's round-the-clock thriller 24, where sleep is a foreign concept.

DB Woodside, Agnes Bruckner and newcomers James Badgedale and Zachary Quinto will make their debuts as recurring characters in the third season of 24 this fall.

The show, which received 10 Emmy nominations last week, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for star Kiefer Sutherland, kicks off with a commercial-free episode October 28.

Possible spoiler alert: Woodside has been cast to play the President's new chief of staff, according to the Hollywood Reporter. However, Fox refused to confirm Tuesday if the President in question was actor Dennis Haysbert whose character, President Palmer, was in critical condition after being the target of a biological attack at the end of last season.

Meanwhile, Bruckner's character reportedly runs into trouble when her boyfriend gets involved in drug trafficking, but according to a source close to production, the blonde's role is a small one. And so, despite reports that cast members Sarah Wynter and Penny Johnson Jerald are on their way out, it's unlikely Bruckner is meant as a replacement to either of these leading ladies.

As for Badgedale, he'll play a young CTU agent named Chase Exen who's partnered with Jack Bauer. No word on what role Quinto will play.

Audiences might remember Woodside as Principal Robin Wood from last season on UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. His credits also include ABC's Murder One, NBC's miniseries The Temptations and the feature Romeo Must Die.

Bruckner launched her career on CBS' The Bold and the Beautiful before going on to costar in the feature Murder by Numbers. Next, she'll be seen in Risk and Stateside.

Welcome mat out for Crewson at 24

ROB SALEM

Canadian actress Wendy Crewson reports for work today as Dr. Anne Packard, the latest addition to the regular cast of Fox's "real-time" thriller, 24.

Yesterday, following their established (and, they insist, coincidental) practice of hiring mostly Canadian talent Kiefer Sutherland, Leslie Hope, Elisha Cuthbert, Mia Kirschner 24's producers signed up the Hamilton-born Crewson, who has established a thriving American film career, playing wife to the likes of Harrison Ford (Air Force One) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (The 6th Day).

Also quite coincidentally, Crewson just happens to be a very good friend of first-season 24 casualty Leslie Hope last year, the two played lesbian lovers in the Lee Rose cable flick, An Unexpected Love.

"I've already called her to give her the lowdown, and tell her all the fun people to hang with," says Hope, also busy with her own new series, Line Of Fire, a Rod Lurie-created FBI drama scheduled for mid-season on ABC.

"And then she called the entire crew," adds Crewson, checking in on the way to her first hair and makeup session. "She's warned them that if they don't all treat me like a queen, she was going come back and hurt them.

"Needless to say, I'm incredibly excited. This is a wonderful opportunity."

The first third-season episode of 24 will air Oct. 28, presented (as was last year's season debut) entirely commercial-free, except for three-minute bookend ads for returning sponsor Ford.

Serious 24 fans who want to preserve the element of surprise might want to stop reading at this point.

The third series is said to be set 2 1/2 years into the future, with Sutherland's intrepid spy guy Jack Bauer already on the trail of an all-new adversary, aided by a gung-ho young protégé. Word has it that his catastrophe-prone daughter, Kim (Cuthbert), is now also working at the CTU, nicely negating the former necessity of her being constantly imperiled, kidnapped, threatened, routed blindly into crack dens and pursued by wild animals.

Dennis Haysbert's President Palmer, having apparently survived last season's poison handshake, may or may not now be incapacitated, may or may not still even be president, and, given the timing, may or may not be running for re-election. The hot rumour here at the Fox sessions was that the new Crewson character may turn out to be a potential love interest.

If so, she'll have him all to herself there are currently no plans to bring back Palmer's scheming ex-wife, Sherry (Penny Johnson Jerald), though producers say a brief re-appearance may be a possibility.

quote:
On the other hand, there is a report on the site from someone else who was at USC yesterday. They said that the scene they observed was Dennis and DB Woodside getting out of a limo and entering a building. The setting is apparently supposed to be the actual USC campus because some of the extras were wearing USC sweaters (How hot was it in L.A. yesterday???) and there were apparently some protestors. It does appear to answer the question about whether or not Palmer is still President or not.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm a student at USC and this is true. The 24 crew shot on campus for three days. A friend of mine was an extra and she said that they were actually pulling students who were wearing clothing that said USC on it to be extras. A lot of the stuff was shot in front of Bovard Auditorium (which is the same building that Tom Hanks and Reese Witherspoon got their diplomas in front of from in Forrest Gump and Legally Blonde, respectively). I don't watch the show so I don't know who the characters are, but my friend said the scene involved a black man exiting the building and all the extras were told to be waving excitedly at "the president." And then another shot required them to pretend to be angry about something. They also shot a scene with two firetrucks and firemen running up the stairs of a building, but that was it.
