The band was formed in the late 1990s by lead singer Mark Greaney and drummer Fergal Matthews. The two recruited Hilary Woods as bassist to complete the trio, playing gigs in Ireland while still studying for their Leaving Cert exams.

The band released their debut album, the self-titled JJ72 in autumn 2000. A great critical and commercial success alike, the album has sold in excess of 500,000 copies in their native Ireland and in the United Kingdom. The album spawned the singles "Snow", "October Swimmer", "Long Way South", "Oxygen" and "Algeria", and saw the band perform promotional tours in Europe, the U.S. and Japan.

The band's second album I To Sky followed in October 2002. It reached the Top 5 of the Irish album charts and the Top 20 of the UK Albums Chart, and contained the singles "Formulae" and "Always and Forever".

In March 2003 bassist Hilary Woods left the band "to pursue other interests". She gave birth to a baby shortly after her departure from the band, and is currently studying at St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra for a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Greaney and Matthews recruited Canadian born bassist Sarah Fox as her replacement. After a two-year silence, the band embarked on their first tour with Sarah Fox in May 2005, and released the download and 7" only single "She's Gone". A second single, "Coming Home" followed in August 2005, peaking at number 52 in the UK Singles Chart. A small venue tour followed in September 2005, with Greaney expressing from the stage his frustrations regarding the release of the third album. The band's third album was said to be complete, with the title rumoured to be On or Heaven City Falls, but no release date was set, pending an ongoing dispute with current record labels Lakota Records and Columbia Records/Sony. Songs rumoured to be included on the new album included "Take From Me", "Rainfalls", "Underground", "Maria", "Everything", "Heat", "Radio" and "Some Day".

However, on June 22, 2006, JJ72 issued a press release announcing they are to split up after eleven years together. They cited their struggle with their record label as their main reason for the split. Mark Greaney has already revealed he is in the recording studio working on a new project at the moment. Sarah Fox is now playing bass for a band called Lluther, whilst the future of Fergal Matthews is as yet unclear.

JJ72 is een rockband uit Dublin, Ierland.

De band werd gevormd aan het eind van de jaren '90 door leadzanger Mark Greaney en drummer Fergal Matthews. De twee nodigden hun derde en laatste bandlid, Hilary Woods, uit als bassist en vormden zo het trio JJ72.

De band bracht hun eerste album, 'JJ72', uit aan het eind van de zomer van 2000. Van dit album zijn in Ierland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk meer dan 500.000 exemplaren verkocht. Singles van dit album waren: 'Snow', 'October Swimmer', 'Long way south', 'Oxygen' en 'Algeria'. De band tourde vervolgens door Europa, de Verenigde Staten en Japan. In Nederland speelden ze onder andere op Pinkpop en als support-act van de britse band Muse in 2001.

In oktober 2002 bracht de band hun tweede album, 'I to Sky', uit. Dit album werd door critici scherp bekritiseerd, maar het bereikte toch de top 5 van de Ierse albumhitlijsten en de top 20 van de Britse, waarna de singles 'Formulae' en 'Always and Forever' werden uitgebracht.

In maart 2003 verliet bassist Hilary Woods de band 'om andere doelen na te streven'. De in Canada geboren Sarah Fox trad vervolgens in mei van dat jaar tot de band toe, waarna JJ72 weer verderging als trio. Na twee jaar stilte begon de band in mei 2005 aan hun eerste tour met Sarah Fox en brachten ze de single 'She's Gone', die alleen verkrijgbaar was als download en als 7" single. Een tweede single, 'Coming Home', volgde in augustus 2005, met als hoogste notering 52 in de Britse hitlijsten. Een tweede, kleine tour volgde in september 2005.

De band had een derde album bijna afgemaakt (volgens de geruchten zou deze 'On' of 'Heaven City Falls' gaan heten) maar nog voordat dit album was gereleaset bracht de band een persbericht uit waarin stond dat ze hadden besloten niet langer verder te gaan. Het een en ander zou zijn gekomen door onenigheid met de platenlabels Lakota records en Columbia Records/Sony. Nummers die waarschijnlijk op het nieuwe album hadden gestaan zijn: 'Take From Me', 'Rainfalls', 'Underground', 'Maria', 'Everything', 'Radio' en 'Some Day'.
