Zware aardbeving in Zuidoost-Aziė (telegraaf)
BANGKOK/HANOI - Een zware aardbeving heeft woensdag het zuidoosten van Aziė getroffen. De beving in het westen van Laos, niet ver van de grens met Thailand, had een kracht van 6,1 volgens de schaal van het Amerikaanse Nationale Geografische Instituut (USGS). Het epicentrum lag 33 kilometer onder de grond.
De beving veroorzaakte tot op grote afstand van het epicentrum paniek. Flats en wolkenkrabbers schudden bijvoorbeeld in het bijna 900 kilometer ver verwijderd liggende Bangkok, waar veel mensen angstig de straat op vluchtten.
Behalve in de Thaise hoofdstad Bangkok was er ook paniek in de Vietnamese hoofdstad Hanoi waar gebouwen wiebelden onder de kracht van de beving in het buurland. Uit de dunbevolkte streek waar het centrum van de beving was, zijn vooralsnog geen meldingen van slachtoffers of schade gekomen.

Mediterranean Sea region near Sardinia and near Greece is showing large thermal stress signatures. Either some large weather events are in progress or these areas are about to have significant quakes in the next five days...
Japan:
The region has been having a number of small aftershocks over the past two weeks and I see signs east of Hokkaido of what may be seismic stress, however, I have not circled it as I think it could be the result of clouds and weather conditions. Still if you live near this area you might want to be sure you have your emergency supplies ready....

The Nias region is having aftershocks from the "Big One" in 2004 which took so many lives and livestock. It shows signs of a seismic event in the region of 4 to 5 on the Richter Scale.
New Zealand:
There are two areas of concern here. The first and most likely is in the southern part of the North Island. The other is out at sea to the NE of the North Island. I think we will be seeing increased quake activity for many months to come throughout the North Island. It would be judicious to keep and eye on the temperatures at Lake Taupo and volcanic activity on White Island.

Since last major seismic burst was detected in 1957-1959, when territories of the Gobi-Altai mountain system showed breaks for about 250 km, and three earthquakes with 10-11 intensity shook Eastern Siberia.

Klyuchevskaya Volcano
The Klyuchevskaya Volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula continued its ongoing activity by releasing another plume on May 24, 2007. The same day, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image, at 01:00 UTC.
In this image, a hotspot marks the volcano’s summit. Outlined in red, the hotspot indicates where MODIS detected unusually warm surface temperatures. Blowing southward from the summit is the plume, which casts its shadow on the clouds below. Near the summit, the plume appears gray, and it lightens toward the south.
With an altitude of 4,835 meters (15,863 feet), Klyuchevskaya (sometimes spelled Klyuchevskoy or Kliuchevskoi) is both the highest and most active volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula. As part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” the peninsula experiences regular seismic activity as the Pacific Plate slides below other tectonic plates in the Earth’s crust. Klyuchevskaya is estimated to have experienced more than 100 flank eruptions in the past 3,000 years. Since its formation 6,000 years ago, the volcano has seen few periods of inactivity.

(CNN) -- A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Wednesday just off the Pacific coast of Guatemala, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Early reports indicated some homes were damaged and people may be missing, journalist Patzy Vazquez told CNN en Espańol.
Hugo Hernandez, the executive director of the National Coordination for Disaster, said there were no immediate reports of injuries, but all phone lines were down.
Officials were using radios to communicate, according to Benedicto Giron, a spokesman for the disaster coordination agency.
Authorities were evacuating high-rise buildings and homes that might be vulnerable to damage if there were aftershocks, but none had been reported to the USGS so far, the agency's Rafael Abreu told CNN.
The quake struck at 1:29 p.m. (3:29 p.m. ET), about 70 miles from the capital, Guatemala City.
The quake's intensity, according to the USGS, was such that it was also felt in El Salvador.
The quake's epicenter was about 40 miles below the Earth's surface, the USGS said. Earthquakes centered closer to the surface generally can cause more damage.
In this case, the quake's depth and distance from shore are likely to limit the extent of the damage, Abreu said. "Had it been closer to the surface, then you would expect, certainly, more critical effects," he said.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said a Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected.
The disaster coordination team was trying to contact local municipalities, Giron said.
Earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater are considered "strong" by the USGS.
CNN meteorologist Chad Myers noted that seismographs on Midway Island -- in the north Pacific, some 1,800 miles away from Guatemala City -- registered the earthquake.
The seismograph detected the shaking about seven minutes after the quake struck, he said.
On Friday, a 5.8-magnitude quake struck offshore Guatemala in almost the same spot, the USGS said. Its epicenter was about 60 miles from Guatemala City. (CNN)

Overigens is er zojuist een sterke aardbeving in Colombia geweest, 5.7 volgens de eerste berichten.
Hey, ik heb flink wat bevingen gemist. Hier in Indonesie is het alweer een tijdje vrij rustig, kan niet goed zijn in een geologisch super-actief gebied.

Emergency services in Chiapas said they were sweeping the area to look for damage around the epicentre, close to the border with the neighbouring state of Oaxaca.

Major Earthquake might strike Taiwan soon

Taipei (dpa) - Some Taiwan scientists have warned that a major earthquake might strike Taiwan soon because the number of small quakes has been unusually small in the first half of 2007, a newspaper reported Monday.
The Liberty Times said that in the first half of the year, Taiwan has recorded only 147 mild quakes, which is only a quarter of the tremors on a normal year.
In the same period, there were only six earthquakes measuring between 5 to 6 on the Richter scale, down from 27 on a normal year.
This has caused some scientists to worry that a major quake might be coming.
Chen Chen-yu, a professor of geology at the National Taiwan University, said: "Lack of release of seismic energy could be an indicator of a major quake. Taiwan's cities and counties which stand on fault lines must take precautions," the Liberty Times quoted him as saying.
Kuo Kai-wen, director of the Seismological Observation Centre, said the lack of seismic activities is unusual, but "currently no country can predict when an earthquake will occur."
But Yen Hong-yuan, an associate profession at the Geophysics Department of the Central University, did not agree with the "killer quake" theory.
"Although there have been less than normal seismic activities in the first half, that does not necessarily mean there will be a killer quake, because there is an active period and sedate period for seismic activities. Seismic activities under Taiwan could pick up in the later half this year," the paper quoted him as saying.
Taiwan lies on the circum-Pacific seismic belt which links the Aleutian Islands, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, New Zealand, Chile and the US West Coast.
About 68 per cent of the world's earthquakes strike this area.
The most recent devastating earthquake in Taiwan occurred on September 21, 1999, when an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale hit central Taiwan counties of Taichung and Nantou, killing 2,400 people and injuring more than 10,000.

Zware beving 6.8 treft Japan
Een aardbeving met een momentmagnitude van 6,8 heeft maandag het noordwesten van Japan getroffen. Zeker twee mensen vonden de dood en meer dan 260 raakten gewond. Bij een kerncentrale brak brand uit.
Het epicentrum van de beving, die zich om 10.13 uur (03.13 Nederlandse tijd) voordeed, lag voor de kust van de prefectuur Niigata, 260 kilometer ten noordwesten van Tokyo. De doden, twee bejaarde vrouwen die onder het puin van een huis terecht kwamen, vielen in de plaats Kashiwazaki, waar tientallen houten gebouwen met de grond gelijk werden gemaakt. Zo'n 440 bewoners van het getroffen gebied moesten worden geėvacueerd. Een kerncentrale bij de stad sloeg bij het begin van de beving automatisch af, maar in de buurt van een van de vier kernreactoren brak brand uit. Deze is inmiddels geblust en volgens de exploitant zijn de reactoren niet beschadigd en is er geen radioactiviteit vrijgekomen.
Wegen en bruggen langs de kust van Niigata raakten beschadigd en in de grond zaten scheuren tot een meter breed. Na de beving werd een tsunami-waarschuwing uitgegeven, maar die werd later ingetrokken. De golven die de kust bereikten waren niet meer dan een halve meter hoog.
De beving was te voelen tot in Noord- en Midden-Japan. In Tokyo zwaaiden hoge gebouwen heen en weer. Verscheidene sneltreinverbindingen met het noorden en noordoosten werden stilgelegd. De luchthaven van Niigata werd ook stilgelegd, maar weer opengesteld toen bleek dat er geen schade was opgetreden.
