(CNN) -- A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Wednesday just off the Pacific coast of Guatemala, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Early reports indicated some homes were damaged and people may be missing, journalist Patzy Vazquez told CNN en Español.
Hugo Hernandez, the executive director of the National Coordination for Disaster, said there were no immediate reports of injuries, but all phone lines were down.
Officials were using radios to communicate, according to Benedicto Giron, a spokesman for the disaster coordination agency.
Authorities were evacuating high-rise buildings and homes that might be vulnerable to damage if there were aftershocks, but none had been reported to the USGS so far, the agency's Rafael Abreu told CNN.
The quake struck at 1:29 p.m. (3:29 p.m. ET), about 70 miles from the capital, Guatemala City.
The quake's intensity, according to the USGS, was such that it was also felt in El Salvador.
The quake's epicenter was about 40 miles below the Earth's surface, the USGS said. Earthquakes centered closer to the surface generally can cause more damage.
In this case, the quake's depth and distance from shore are likely to limit the extent of the damage, Abreu said. "Had it been closer to the surface, then you would expect, certainly, more critical effects," he said.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said a Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected.
The disaster coordination team was trying to contact local municipalities, Giron said.
Earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater are considered "strong" by the USGS.
CNN meteorologist Chad Myers noted that seismographs on Midway Island -- in the north Pacific, some 1,800 miles away from Guatemala City -- registered the earthquake.
The seismograph detected the shaking about seven minutes after the quake struck, he said.
On Friday, a 5.8-magnitude quake struck offshore Guatemala in almost the same spot, the USGS said. Its epicenter was about 60 miles from Guatemala City. (CNN)

Hey, ik heb flink wat bevingen gemist. Hier in Indonesie is het alweer een tijdje vrij rustig, kan niet goed zijn in een geologisch super-actief gebied.

Taipei (dpa) - Some Taiwan scientists have warned that a major earthquake might strike Taiwan soon because the number of small quakes has been unusually small in the first half of 2007, a newspaper reported Monday.
The Liberty Times said that in the first half of the year, Taiwan has recorded only 147 mild quakes, which is only a quarter of the tremors on a normal year.
In the same period, there were only six earthquakes measuring between 5 to 6 on the Richter scale, down from 27 on a normal year.
This has caused some scientists to worry that a major quake might be coming.
Chen Chen-yu, a professor of geology at the National Taiwan University, said: "Lack of release of seismic energy could be an indicator of a major quake. Taiwan's cities and counties which stand on fault lines must take precautions," the Liberty Times quoted him as saying.
Kuo Kai-wen, director of the Seismological Observation Centre, said the lack of seismic activities is unusual, but "currently no country can predict when an earthquake will occur."
But Yen Hong-yuan, an associate profession at the Geophysics Department of the Central University, did not agree with the "killer quake" theory.
"Although there have been less than normal seismic activities in the first half, that does not necessarily mean there will be a killer quake, because there is an active period and sedate period for seismic activities. Seismic activities under Taiwan could pick up in the later half this year," the paper quoted him as saying.
Taiwan lies on the circum-Pacific seismic belt which links the Aleutian Islands, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, New Zealand, Chile and the US West Coast.
About 68 per cent of the world's earthquakes strike this area.

Zware beving 6.8 treft Japan
Een aardbeving met een momentmagnitude van 6,8 heeft maandag het noordwesten van Japan getroffen. Zeker twee mensen vonden de dood en meer dan 260 raakten gewond. Bij een kerncentrale brak brand uit.
Het epicentrum van de beving, die zich om 10.13 uur (03.13 Nederlandse tijd) voordeed, lag voor de kust van de prefectuur Niigata, 260 kilometer ten noordwesten van Tokyo. De doden, twee bejaarde vrouwen die onder het puin van een huis terecht kwamen, vielen in de plaats Kashiwazaki, waar tientallen houten gebouwen met de grond gelijk werden gemaakt. Zo'n 440 bewoners van het getroffen gebied moesten worden geëvacueerd. Een kerncentrale bij de stad sloeg bij het begin van de beving automatisch af, maar in de buurt van een van de vier kernreactoren brak brand uit.
