'Pretend' raakt me het meest..
B-kant bij 'Set The Tone', ook een heerlijk nummer trouwens.quote:Set The Tone is a soul classic with sparse beats, uplifting rhythms and a feel good funky drive throughout the track. The single features the original and two 12” mixes with guest appearances from rapper Shaun Hollywood. Having already won over the soul and R&B worlds, the mainstream release of this track will help break Nate with a whole new audience.
This release is completed by the addition of Pretend, a collaboration with The Emmanuel Project, is a treat for those that have already supported Set The Tone and love their soul music. It has an infectious swing-beat rhythm with hooky vocals in a Musiq Soulchild kinda vibe - a clever production, which is not too far from the urban market yet so unique.

Title: Kingdom Falls
Label: Absolute/Universal
Kingdom Falls, the sophomore effort from noted British R & B contender Nate James opens with the startling call to arms ‘Outta My Head’. Moreover from this point on a Jackson-esque, Motown-like template begins to formulate, with emphasis on big production, vocal hooks and catchy tunes. Furthermore despite the albums influence referencing moments, enough of Nate’s own signature sound clearly shines through as the album progresses. Which in turn culminates in countless memorable moments, such as the albums relentless ‘Choke’, jazzy ‘Wonderland’ and the album’s eponymous title track. Contemporary urban tastes seem more than catered for as the album progresses, indicated in tracks such as ’ Back To You’ and ’High Times’. However much like, say chocolate that is too rich or champagne that is too bubbly it seems at times that the album is somewhat overcooked. That is fifteen tracks to me, at times seems a tad too much, moreover before anyone attempts to tell me that this is de-rigueur for R&B albums this doesn’t necessary make it right. To compare and contrast, ’ Off The Wall’ contains some nine tracks, ’ Purple Rain’ an additional nine. Despite such concerns however when tracks like ’Just Say Yes’ underpin proceeding perhaps some justification for long running times seems valid. To conclude Nate James is a strong contender for the crown of British R&B, impressive production, passion and ambition clearly dominate proceedings. Additionally an impressive back-catalogue is beginning to take shape in said artist’s repertoire. Thus one awaits the future Nate James release’s with much anticipation

Following three MOBO nominations (Best UK Male/ Best R 'n' B/ Best Newcomer) and the international success of his 125,000 selling debut album, Nate James returns with 'Kingdom Falls,' the title track from his new album, released June 11 on FroFunk Records.
Nate wrote 'Kingdom Falls' after a recent trip to Rwanda with the charity SURF, where he was working with the survivors of the genocide. "The situations I saw out there shocked me," he says. "I was meeting men the same age as me but with a life that was a polar opposite. Those experiences made me look inward; you consider your own life, what it means and what you have."
ilikemusic caught up with Nate James to talk about his new material, running his own label and his recent trip to Rwanda
"I Like Music because… it makes me smile!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ILM: Your new album Kingdom Falls will be released on June 18th. The album was mixed by Outkast's mix engineer Neal H Pogue, at the same studio in Los Angeles where Michael Jackson's Thriller was recorded. What did you learn from him and how was that whole experience?
NATE: Unfortunately I never got to go out there during the mixing period as I was away in Europe touring!! Typical! But I'm a huge fan of Neal's work and knew I was in safe hands for sure! The fact that he's done all of Outkast's mixing since day dot is a huge reassurance ha ha!
ILM: Which track did you have the most fun laying down in the studio?
NATE: That would have to be thinking bout you featuring my friend vula! We were out in LA doing a late writing session with the producer Jamie Jazz, the song turned out great but the funniest thing was taking the p*** out of the American idol auditions whilst eating ice cream and drinking beer!! Weird mix I know but it worked!
ILM: Out on your very own FroFunk label … how's that going? Distributed by Absolute/Universal. Tips for those running own label on getting a distribution deal?
NATE: I think the main piece of advice though it may sound a bit cliché is perseverance. There's a lot of pitfalls and closed doors in the industry and it's all about being strong and kickin em' down! I'm very lucky as the team at absolute are behind me all the way so that a BIG help!
ILM: It must be nice to retain control over your music, something so many artists long for?
NATE: Its great!. I made the decision to do that when I was writing my first album and made enquiries as to how. I've had experiences in the past of 'signing my life away' as it were and this way works best for me that s for sure.
ILM: You've evolved on this album. The production takes a massive leap forward, with the Liverpool Session Orchestra's epic strings, adding texture to a melange of funk, house, soul and drum & bass influences, this comes after you discovered producer Danny S on MySpace, and inspired by his fusion of soul with industrial electronics, got together. How was it working with each other?
NATE: It was so much fun! He's a crazy northern lad we're bout the same age so we got on like a house on fire. It's great to meet someone with a similar creative flare, not afraid to try new things! I think these days music can sometimes sound a bit samey so it's all about evolving and giving the ears something fresh!!
ILM: 'Kingdom Falls,' single is about your recent trip to Rwanda. Can you describe that trip and how it's affected you?
NATE: I saw so many people who's lives had been ripped apart by the genocide, whether it be orphaned children or women who had been raped all because they were of the 'wrong' tribe it was heartbreaking. The trip inspired my question what would I do if everything I had and loved was taken away, hence I wrote a song about it. 'What will u do when the kingdom falls?'
ILM: You filmed the 'Pretend' promo in the US with Vula from Basement Jaxx. How was that?
NATE: It was during the same trip that we wrote thinkin bout you. Me and vula have been friends for years and I just turned round to her and said lets go to the states for a 'working holiday' ! we ended up goin to LA and `Hawaii and then I went and visited my family in North Carolina. We had a blast!! As for the vid Ethan Lader who shot the vid for set the tone and Kingdom Falls was in town so I called him chatted thru some ideas and we did the vid while we were there!
ILM: In Europe and the Far East you're v famous and have performed alongside Erykah Badu and Snoop Dog while David Bailey is shooting you for GQ Italia!" It must be quite a buzz to hop on a plane and be famous but be able to chill out a bit here, or do you wish you were as well known here?
NATE: For me making music and performing is the perk of my job. The fame is a side product so I don't crave it. Obviously its nice to be known cos you get to que jump and go to nice parties but I take it or leave it! Its nice to be able to go to the pub wiv my friends and chill here whereas in Europe or japan I can t really do that so much. But I aint complaining!
ILM: What does the future hold for Nate James?
NATE: More music, more fun! Have shows coming up, the first being scala on the 14th june, then I'm off to italy for tours etc then to the states….so I'll be a busy boy, got a new album to promote and all that ha ha!!!
ILM: Can you describe your favourite place on earth?
NATE: My bedroom at my parents house. Its has a particular smell and feel, its where I'm most peaceful cos its out of London and my home town of woodbridge is beautiful!!
ILM: Song that instantly makes you smile?
NATE: Earth, Wind and Fire 'September',its just such a get up and dance tune and I'm a September baby so that makes it even more great!
