25th Mega Record & CD Fair
On Saturday, April 8th and Sunday, April 9th in Utrecht (The Netherlands) the 25th Mega Record & CD Fair is held. The anniversary calls for a special celebration of this world-wide meeting of experts, aficionados and collectors of popmusic. From 35 countries the exhibitors and visitors travel in to Utrecht: from all over Europe, as well as from Canada, Argentina, Japan and the United States.
The collectors come here for music on every format: on CD, on DVD, but most of all for LPs, singles and 12-inches. Or rather for vinyl. So extra attention will be paid to vinyl that weekend. With the arrival of digital music in the mid eighties, it looked like vinyl would completely disappear, but luckily it made an unexpected come back, partly because of the interest of young people for deejaying. Playing records is very hip again.
To show how a record is actually made Record Industry from Haarlem will give a demonstration of cutting and pressing at the fair with their mobile equipment. In 1998 this biggest pressing plant in Europe was nearly closed down, but since then the demand for vinyl has grown explosively and in 2004 there were 7 million records pressed again. To keep the vinyl in spotless condition after purchase special record cleaning machines are on display at the fair and a useful booklet with maintenance advise is available.
The 25th anniversary is suitably celebrated with the release of a limited single by the Dutch band C-Mon & Kypski with a Dutch RareGroove from their compilation and remix CD with the same title, released last year. For their CD they collected a good number of phat early Dutch funkhits from the sixties and seventies.
The exhibition is put together by the 'Rock and Art Hall of Fame' from Hoek of Holland,
where the history of Dutch popmusic is displayed in the shape of memorabilia like instruments, equipment, stage costumes, posters, golden and platinum records, music magazines, contracts and records of Dutch bands. The topitems from their collection are shown at the record fair.
As usual the surrounding program offers live performances, signing sessions and guest deejays. The fanclubs of major rockstars are presents and there are many poprelated articles, such as posters, pictures, books and magazines.
The Mega Record & CD Fair in the Utrecht Jaarbeurs is open on Saturday, April 8th from 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. and on Sunday, April 9th from 10 a.m. till 5 p.m. For more details phone ARC Productions during office hours at 0031 229 213891 or email to: info@recordplanet.nl
