Lebanese Christian leader killed

Lebanese Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel, a Maronite Christian leader, has been killed in the capital, Beirut.
Mr Gemayel, a leading anti-Syrian politician, was reportedly shot in the street in a Christian suburb and rushed to hospital, where he died.

His death comes amid a political crisis in Lebanon, following the resignation of six pro-Syrian cabinet members.

Mr Gemayel was a member of the Phalange Party and the son of former President Gemayel Amin.

Gunmen opened fire on Mr Gemayel's convoy as it travelled through Sin el-Fil neighbourhood, Reuters news agency quoted security sources as saying.

Syria blamed

The news of the killing was confirmed by Saad Hariri, the son of the country's former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, who was himself killed last year in a huge blast.

A recent UN report implicated Syria in Rafik Hariri's death, although Syria has denied involvement.

Saad Hariri, who is also the leader of the anti-Syrian coalition in the majority in parliament, has now accused Damascus of being behind the killing of Mr Gemayel as well.

"The Cedar revolution is under attack...Today one of our main believers in a free democratic Lebanon has been killed. We believe the hand of Syria is all over [this]," he told CNN.

Mr Gemayel's death means the Lebanese cabinet is now missing yet another minister.

The six pro-Syrian ministers quit their jobs last week in an attempt to bring down the government after their calls for a greater role in government were rejected.

Lebanon death 'may herald coup'

The killing of Lebanese politician Pierre Gemayel may be the "first shot" in a coup against the government, a top US official has said.
John Bolton, the American ambassador to the United Nations, said recent probes into political killings in Lebanon suggested Syrian involvement.

He told the BBC that if Syria was deemed to have been involved, the implications were serious.

Saturday sees the second day of a strike protesting at the killing.

Many shops closed on Friday with business leaders saying they hoped the action would move Lebanon closer to a "national dialogue" and ward off the threat of division and street protests.

Mr Gemayel, a Maronite Christian who was the industry minister, was shot in his car in a Christian area of Beirut on Tuesday.

Many Lebanese accuse Damascus of orchestrating the 34-year-old's murder, although Syria explicitly denies any role.

'Coup d'etat'

Speaking in a BBC interview, Mr Bolton said Mr Gemayel's killing might be part of a wider plot.

"A few weeks ago the White House took the unprecedented step of saying that Syria and Iran, acting through Hezbollah, were on the verge of staging a coup d'etat against the democratically elected government of Lebanon, and I have to say that this assassination of Pierre Gemayel might well be the first shot in that coup."

He said did not want to pre-judge any investigation into Mr Gemayel's death, but proof of Syrian involvement would show it was "not just a supporter of terrorism but is a state actor in a terrorist fashion".

"I think the United States has to take that into account when it decides whether and to what extent to deal with a country like that.

The BBC's Nick Miles in Washington says the US is in a diplomatic quandary.

It seems increasingly likely that a key advisory panel on future strategy in Iraq will suggest bringing in Syria to create a long-term solution to the violence, he says.

But our correspondent adds the assassination of Mr Gemayel has made that all the more difficult.

The Lebanese cabinet is due to meet on Saturday to approve a United Nations plan for an international tribunal to try those accused of murdering the former Prime Minister, Rafiq Hariri.

Syria has been implicated in the bombing that killed Mr Hariri last year, but denies involvement.

Shaky government

Correspondents say the Lebanese cabinet is expected to give its final approval to the tribunal, and this is likely to increase tensions with pro-Syrian politicians.

Earlier this month six pro-Syrian ministers resigned from the cabinet, saying they wanted a greater role in government.

The death or resignation of two more cabinet ministers would bring down the government.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council has agreed to a request from the Lebanese government to help investigate Mr Gemayel's murder.

His killing will be probed by the same tribunal that implicated senior Syrian officials and pro-Syrian Lebanese in the killing of Mr Hariri.

Correspondents say the government is accusing Hezbollah of exploiting the delicate political situation in Lebanon to try and block the UN-backed probe into the Hariri killing.

Pro-Syrian groups have already said the UN plan is illegal under Lebanon's constitution.

In 2005, Syria withdrew its troops from Lebanon following 29 years of military and political rule over its smaller neighbour, after massive international pressure following the assassination of Mr Hariri.

Survivors of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre have criticised the Dutch government for giving an insignia to UN peacekeepers who served in the city.
They said honouring Dutch troops who were charged with protecting the Muslim Bosnian enclave was "scandalous".

Prosecutor Says Fugitive Serb War Crimes Suspect Mladic Hiding in Serbia


Serbia's war crimes prosecutor says he fully backs claims by United Nations officials that fugitive war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic is hiding in Serbia.

Serbia has in the past denied that Mladic was in the country, and said it had done all it could do to deliver the fugitive general to the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

Belgrade's failure to find Mladic prompted the European Union earlier this year to suspend pre-entry talks with Serbia.

Mladic has been evading arrest since his 1995 genocide indictment. The Hague tribunal indicted the former top commander of Serb forces in Bosnia-Herzegovina for his role in attacks on civilians during the Balkan conflict of the 1990s. These include the Srebrenica massacre.

Lebanese leader blocks UN court

Lebanon's President Emile Lahoud has formally rejected a cabinet proposal to create a tribunal to try suspects in the killing of former PM Rafik Hariri.
The pro-Syrian leader said the cabinet had already lost its legitimacy when it passed the decree calling for the UN-backed tribunal last month.

Mr Lahoud has regarded the cabinet as unconstitutional since Shia ministers and their allies resigned last month.

A UN inquiry has implicated Syria in Mr Hariri's assassination last year.

Syria has denied the allegation.

Mr Lahoud had said he would reject the decree to form a tribunal the day after the cabinet passed it.

A statement issued by the president's office on Saturday said he had returned the draft to cabinet "for reviewing as soon as a constitutional and legitimate cabinet is formed".

Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's cabinet is expected to seek parliament's approval for the plan, even though it does not have the president's signature.

Protests

Lebanon's cabinet last month approved the plan for an international tribunal to try suspects in Mr Hariri's murder.

The emergency cabinet session was held without six pro-Syrian ministers, including some from the Hezbollah movement, after talks to bring them back to the cabinet failed.

Mr Siniora, had offered to postpone the meeting if the ministers would return.

Tensions between the cabinet and Hezbollah escalated last month with the killing of industry minister Pierre Gemayel.

Thousands of Hezbollah followers have been protesting in central Beirut for over week, calling on the government to resign.

Er staan zoveel onderliggende verbanden in het materiaal vermeld dat de kans op toeval nihil is.
Het is ook een psychische excercitie, er vind een ssort 'tuning' plaats die een aanwijzing kan geven wat het onderliggende verband is, in de vorm van een synchroniteit of een intuitief idee dat onmiddelijk bevestiging geeft met de beschreven elementen in de theorie
