Once again unveiling hidden treasures from his archive of tape loops, William Basinski releases three pieces made at his Brooklyn apartment during one night in 1982, adding a fourth composition (based on the same source material) made earlier this year. You can't help but wonder why this music, recorded so long ago, is only just surfacing. Was the world not ready for WIlliam Basinski in 1982, or was WIlliam Basinski simply not ready to hand himself over to an audience at that point? Whatever the reasoning, we're certainly reaping the benefits of the influential ambient composer's stockpile, and 92982 proves to be a real highlight in his output of recent years. Despite the minimalist essence of Basinski's oeuvre there's a pronounced sense of variety, diversity and depth at work in these four tracks, with each taking on its own specific persona. '92982.1' is outstanding, featuring lilting, gritty strings through the left of the stereo field while crumbling piano sonorities rule to the right. Far from exhibiting any signs of automation or impersonal repetition you can always hear a human hand shaping the music. The faded, rattling chord movements of '92982.2' take on an altogether more ghostly, dissolved quality, with echo-flecked machine jolts peppering the mixdown, underlining how fragile this whole process is. The third track, meanwhile, is an extended version of a piano-based piece that appeared in its original incarnation on the Variations: A Movement In Chrome Primitive album (surely one of the standout albums in Basinski's entire catalogue), here stretched and developed over the course of twenty minutes. It's a beautiful study in the interplay between an instrumental performance and the medium onto which it's recorded, full of ruptures and low frequency rumble as the tape itself interferes with the flow and consistency of the music. Finally, Basinski takes a fresh angle on his source loops with a composition recorded in February of this year. There's a markedly different character to this final entry; an unexpected cleanliness that somehow feels just right as a coda to the archival dust and dereliction of all that's come before. Its tacit stateliness serves as confirmation that all these years on, Basinski has lost none of his form, and that despite the richness of his work in the early eighties he's still a very active, utterly compelling creative force. David Tagg's long-awaited follow-up to last year's Fundamentals Of Orchid Biology has finally arrived. Wind Blown Guitar carries solemn white hymns of warped wooden harmonies through cobwebbed hallways and down porch steps, into the open air of a hot summer. The whir and hum of aged reel-to-reel tapes bathes David's guitar in a humid shroud, and pools of raw reverb steam his amp like a hot bath in a cavern. Musically similar to things like "A Kingdom Of Dusk" from the 21MG Series or even Skin Diagram at times, Wind Blown Guitar contains some of David's most straightforward guitar playing yet, presented over a stately backdrop of loops and drones and woven together like an old family scrapbook. This release also features the track "Nautical Dusk", which was originally featured on Attacknine's "13 Weeks Of Summer" compilation. The definitive summer album from us at SSR, and limited to 100 copies with beautiful photography and design by David.

Hun gedeelde krankzinnigheid botvieren ze muzikaal onder de naam Sylvester Anfang II. Er zijn vele adjectieven die bij hun muziek passen, maar de omschrijving 'wel heel erg psychedelische freefolk' moet afdoende zijn. Thematisch vinden ze aansluiting bij de blackmetalbeweging en bij oude (Vlaamse) sagen en legendes.

Het is een muzikale ratjetoe met veel improvisatie en chaos: het auditieve equivalent van een herfstig kraaienbos. Orgels loeien, psychedelisch gitaarspel klinkt en af en toe kreunt er een in lompen gehulde zatte zonderling. Er worden epistels voorgedragen die eerder werden geweigerd door alle parochiekranten van Vlaanderen.

Sylvester anfang II is bijzonder slecht geproduceerd: korrelig en mat. Het is een verschrikkelijke release. Het is drek, modder, troep en juist daarom gaat er een bijzondere aantrekkingskracht van uit.

The Room isn't too dissimilar to a film score, incidental music for the reflective moment. It holds your attention without commanding it, allowing your mind to wander within the confines of the space it created.

In a genre constantly struggling to define and re-invent itself, often tripping over conceptual hurdles in an attempt at originality, many “dark” ambient artists inhabit familiar territory, trawling out rehashed sonic concepts based upon murderers, deep space phenomena, the occult etc, etc, to the point of becoming a tiresome cliché, and many have become almost laughable caricatures of earlier and more successful predecessors.

Sleep Research Facility have neatly side-stepped some of these conceptual pitfalls in both the theme, and choice of sounds used on Deep Frieze. Drawing inspiration from the bleak and remote Antarctic regions, Deep Frieze slowly unfurls, moving from the sound of a sub-glacial wind storm on 79o S 83oW, gradually evolving and building on subsequent tracks, occasionally perforated by the warm glow of harmonics, as tone clusters break through the icy carapace, carried on rich resonant bass dronescapes. Here and there the relief of hearing a barely audible voice permeates the soundscape, albeit the faintest whisper of humanity, a crackling radio weather report maybe, or a message lost to the frozen tundra.

To classify this album as being entirely dark is something of a misnomer, as much of what appears here is bathed in light and dynamic range, utilising sound from across the frequency spectrum, yet still achieving that sense of sparseness and isolation prevalent in this sinister and extreme polar environment. SRF use these dynamics to great effect, particularly when anything remotely tonal drops away, leaving the listener suspended in an eerie half silence, with little or no notable audible stimuli, there is a sense of feeling lost, the feeling of utter desolation that must confront those brave few who have ventured into this inhospitable territory, a stark, inhuman region that has claimed many lives, broken many men, and whose darkest secrets still remain silent, encapsulated in its icy depths. This is deeply immersive sonic escapism of the very highest order..absolutely essential.
