Hier kwamen de nieuwe kunstideeën aan het licht bij de uitgave van een almanak "Der Blaue Reiter", door R. Piper, in 1912, te München. De naam van de schildersgroep was afkomstig van de omslag van deze almanak, die ontworpen was naar een schilderij van Kandinsky.
Ook hier vond men elk academisme in strijd met de ware kunst. Ook hier zag men de emotie als voornaamste element van het creatieve vermogen en trachtte men deze tot expressie te brengen.
Uit de scheuring met de "Neue Künstlervereinigung", in 1911, groeide een rondreizende tentoonstelling "Die erste Ausstellung der Redaktion des Blauen Reiters". Vanuit de Galerie Tannhaüser te München werd de Galerie Der Sturm te Berlijn aangedaan en te Hagen het Folkwangmuseum. Ook Keulen en Frankfurt kwamen hierna.
Een aantal kunstenaars onderhielden connecties met "Der Blaue Reiter": Paul Klee, Alexei von Jawlensky, Gabriele Münther, Heinrich Campendonck, Marianne von Werefkin, Lionel Feininger, Hans Arp, Louis Moillet.
Er kwam nog een deelname aan het "Herbstsalon" van 1913, in de Galerie Der Sturm te Berlijn, op uitnodiging van H. Walden, de uitgever van het gelijknamige blad, maar de Eerste Wereldoorlog maakte een einde aan de beweging. Marc en Macke sneuvelden en Klee, Kandinsky en anderen verlieten het land.
In 1920 keerden Klee en Kandinsky terug naar Duitsland. Ze werden aangesteld als leraren aan het intussen ontstane Bauhaus.
