Pre-production is about to get under way on the two "The Hobbit" movies says Variety.

Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are expected to write the scripts under the direction of Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro.

Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Andy Serkis (Gollum) have already been in contact in regards to starring in the film, the three "Lord of the Rings" characters playing important parts in the story.

Director Guillermo del Toro says "I am all for keeping the actors who originated the parts, as much as availability and their willingness will allow."

Tsja, ik moet toch een beetje wennen aan het idee van een 10 jaar oudere Mortensen in de prequel. Ik vrees voor het Hopkins effect in Silence of the Lambs - Red Dragon

Over the weekend, producer Peter Jackson and director Guillermo del Toro answered several questions during an online chat about their upcoming film versions of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and the proposed sequel.

Key bits of information garnered from the chat, a full transcript of which can be found at WetaNZ, include:

- Scripting and early conceptual designs will be worked on for the rest of this year.

- Pre-production will take place throughout 2009 and shooting will happen back-to-back throughout 2010 with a short break between films. The first film will hit cinemas in December 2011.

- The second film doesn't have a title yet and won't until after scripting is complete. Rather than focusing on the years between the two tales, it will cover a specific incident that took place between them.

- Casting will not begin until next year, however all the original 'Rings' cast members that can be brought back will be.

- The films will be shot in 2.35:1 aspect ratio with a PG-13 rating. There are no plans for a 3D release yet.

- A lot of the original production team will be brought back, as will composer Howard Shore.

- Ian Holm will participate somehow, even though Bilbo will be recast to reflect the character's younger age.

- del Toro's frequent collaborator Ron Perlman will have a role.

- Location shooting throughout New Zealand will take place with Hobbiton to be rebuilt bigger than before. It's unlikely any locations outside NZ will be used.

- A Blu-ray release of the 'Rings' trilogy is in the works, but NOT this year.

Tolkien Spawn Looking to Halt Hobbit Production
Written by IESB Staff
Sunday, 25 May 2008

Christopher Tolkien, son to famous author J.R.R. Tolkien, is 83 years old and doesn't like Hollywood.

He was against the making of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy (friends say they still don't think he ever watched the films) and is at it again now that The Hobbit and its sequel are on the fast track to the big screen.

He is asking for "one last crusade" in the long-running court battle he has going with the producers of LOTR. Apparently, he plans to ask a Californian judge to back his claim that he can "terminate" film rights to the Hobbit in a hearing on June 6th. Witnesses say he "is furious with New Line studio."

A report at the Times Online says this news "comes just weeks before carpenters are due to begin work in New Zealand on the sets for the latest Middle-earth epic." If anything, they may start work on rebuilding the Hobbiton film set, Jackson said in the online chat yesterday that Hobbiton would be built up bigger and better than it had ever been in the LOTR, so that would be the only "set" that be worked on already considering pre-production work on the films will begin in 2009 and the films will be shot back-to-back, beginning in 2010.

The Hobbit is set to be released in December 2011 and the second as yet untitled film in December 2012.

Sources say Sir Ian Holm, who played the hobbit Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings, is expected to narrate, which I am really not sure about considering his age, but it could happen.

As part of an exclusive chat with Del Toro for the next issue of Empire, on sale Friday, we spoke to him further about many details, including the casting of Bilbo.

"We are writing based on [Ian Holm's performance], but other than that, we have ideas [of who could play him]," Del Toro told us. "I can tell you that it's down to a few names that we all agree upon. And that our first choice...completely, magically, we said the same name. All of us!"

The Daily Express reports that Scottish hunk and acclaimed 29-year-old thespian James McAvoy ("Atonement," "The Last King of Scotland") is the favourite to play the lead role of Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo del Toro's "The Hobbit".

According to the dubious British tabloid, "A number of names have been doing the rounds, including Daniel Radcliffe and Jack Black, but James (McAvoy) is the one the film's bosses really want. They're expected to have talks soon so hopefully it could be confirmed in the not too distant future."

In a chat with Empire earlier this week, director Guillermo del Toro said that he and producer Peter Jackson have a short list of names in regards to who they'd like to play Bilbo, and their first choice is someone both he and Jackson immediately agreed upon.

Speculation about the role will continue for a while though as del Toro has already warned that it'll be "at least a year before we announce any casting."

The 5'7 Glaswegian McAvoy will next be seen in this Summer's action vehicle "Wanted".

Lord Of The Rings filmmakers Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro have called off their search for a writer to pen franchise prequel The Hobbit - after deciding they are best suited for the task.

The Hobbit director del Toro and Jackson, who directed the first three original films, had previously launched a global search for a scribe to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien's classic to the big screen.

But after eight months, the pair has announced their plans to tackle the movie and its follow-up themselves.

Writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who both collaborated with Jackson on the Rings trilogy, will join the filmmakers in the writers' room.

Shooting on both movies, which will take place simultaneously, is slated to start in late 2009 in New Zealand, with The Hobbit expected for release in 2011 and its sequel in 2012.

Guillermo del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth," "Hellboy") made an appearance this weekend at The New Yorker Festival where he discussed his future projects in surprising detail. Coming Soon was on hand to catch the talk and took down the important notes and quotes.

First off del Toro is immersing himself in World War I documentaries and books because 'The Hobbit' "is a book born out of Tolkien's generation's experience with World War I and the disappointment of being in that field and seeing all those values kind of collapse."

He's also being very careful about the design of Smaug the Dragon - "The design, I'm pretty sure that will be the last design we will sign off on, and the first design we have attempted. It is certainly a matter of turning every stone before figuring out what he looks like, because what he looks like will tell you what he is."

He freely admits that there will be different sensibilities involved in "The Hobbit" than in the 'Rings' trilogy and the 'Wargs' creatures in the novel, based on the demonic wolf in Nordic mythology, will be the "slender, archetypical wolf" rather than a hyena-shaped creature as previously described.

Wanneer ze dat 15 jaar geleden in Jurassic Park erg netjes konden doen, dan zal dat er anno 2010 helemaal goed uitzien.
