quote:Ignoring the miniscule amount of the fines for a moment. If I was Materazzi I would be fuming that I had even been called before this kangaroo court.
This is a blatant attempt to steer the spotlight away from the most public example of ABH ever witnessed by a worldwide audience committed by one of the sports most illustrious figures. Obviously FIFA are trying to make Materazzi the scapegoat to try and preserve Zidanes imagine. i.e the big nasty italian with the tatoos called the shy French genius a nasty name - shame on him.
The fact that the French nutter tried to cave the italian's chest in seems to being over looked.
As for the punishment you can't ban someone who has retired or if you do you ban him forever. Zidane no doubt got paid a fair wedge from the French FA for appearing and guiding them to the final so that's your starting point then treble it.
As for Materazzi he shouldn't even be involved with this farce.
quote:The way i see it is just cos its zidane they have to make a big deal out of him being provoked cos the nasty man said nasty words to him.aaah bless his little cottons...
It is pathetic. The message it sends out is that making a disparaging remark to an opponent is only slightly better than headbutting someone. It is not. What Zidane did was assault and i dont care how good a footballer he was he has made himself look like a spoilt child who cannot even accept full responsibility for what he has done. The footballing authorities have made themselves look like total mugs who will pander to the egos of the biggest names.Everyone loses on this one...
quote:How can they justify banning Materazzi for 2 matches?
What have they actually banned him for?
There is no actual evidence of what he said so are we now going to have a situation where every person that is sent off for violent conduct is going to claim that the person they hit insulted their mother
Etc.quote:Is this a joke?! From what i can gather FIFA have said both players admitted that Materazzi's comments were not rascist yet he's got a 2 game ban with Zidane's headbutt only getting 3! This has set a ridiculous precedent that FIFA will never be able to follow up. Are they planning of punishing every player who insults an opponent in future?
While Zizou’s ban is irrelevant, as the French star has retired from international football, Materazzi stands to miss Italy’s crucial Euro 2008 qualifiers against Lithuania and France. FIFA’s decision has left the Italian football community fuming.
“It’s scandalous to ban a player just for saying something,” stated Milan captain Paolo Maldini. “It’s the first time that it’s happened and it’s only because Materazzi is Italian and they want to justify the action of a great champion who made a mistake.”
Inter President Giacinto Facchetti has also unsurprisingly spoken out in support of the ex-Perugia defender.
““I have to underline the discrepancy between the punishments inflicted on Materazzi and Zidane, or rather between the man who provoked and the man who reacted,” he maintained.
Materazzi – on holiday in the Maldives – has been happy for others to fight his corner and has refused to criticise the decision.
“It was nice to see people protesting on my behalf,” he admitted. “If I say anything I’ll start a World War.”
The Italian Football Federation is preparing an appeal.
