Graham Poll kreeg met zijn clowneske optreden in het duel Australië-Kroatië ongewild de lachers op zijn hand. De Engelse arbiter was in de slotfase samen met zijn assistenten de weg volledig kwijt en veroorzaakte veel commotie.
Zo repte The Guardian in zijn minute-to-minute-verslag smakelijk over zijn falen. 'Hij rijdt in een auto met vierkante wielen van het veld. Wat een joker!'
Poll vergat Josip Simunic uit het veld te sturen toen hij hem in de slotfase zijn tweede gele kaart had voorgehouden. Vervolgens floot hij af toen Australië op het punt stond 3-2 te maken. Waarna hij Simunic een derde gele kaart gaf en hem nu wel rood toonde. Om de wedstrijd vervolgens nog eens af te blazen.
De Engelse wedkantoren antwoordden razendsnel met aantrekkelijke quotes voor het geval Poll nog eens fluit dit WK. William Hill biedt 33 keer je inzet als Poll wordt aangewezen voor de WK-finale. Vóór zijn gestuntel in Stuttgart was dat nog vijf tegen één.

Wat heeft ie tegen Viduka? Als je de beelden van deze wedstrijd gaat bekijken dan zou je zweren dat ie zeker 2 miljoen heeft ingezet op het feit dat Viduka geen enkele vrije trap zou mee krijgen.
