Alain Vigneault, the Canucks AHL affiliate coach in Winnipeg is still widely regarded as Vancouver's prime candidate, although Habscheid, among others is considered part of the process.

Habscheid is also drawing interest from around the National Hockey League.

The New Jersey Devils are also believed to be interested in discussing Habscheid's future.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The Edmonton Oilers' other goalies are about to get a whole lot busier.

Backups no more, either Ty Conklin or Jussi Markkanen will have to step in for No. 1 netminder Dwayne Roloson, who was knocked out of the Stanley Cup finals Monday night with an injured right knee.

Roloson, who played every minute of Edmonton's surprising playoff run, went down in the third period of a 5-4 loss to Carolina. Moments after the game, Oilers coach Craig MacTavish delivered the grim news.

"Goalie's not good. Won't be back in the series," he said.

Canucks Acquire Forward Tommi Santala

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that the Canucks have acquired right wing Tommi Santala and a fifth round draft pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for a conditional fourth round pick in 2007 from the Atlanta Thrashers.

Santala, 26, joins the Canucks after playing the 2005-06 season in the Finnish Elite League with Jokerit of Helsinki. Through 43 games played, Santala tallied nine goals, 23 assists and 80 penalty minutes. Prior to the 2005-06 season, Santala played two seasons for the Atlanta Thrashers and their AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves. In 33 games with Atlanta, Santala recorded three points (1-2-3) and 22 penalty minutes.
The 6-foot-3, 220 lbs., native of Helsinki, Finland recently represented his country at the 2006 IIHF World Championship in Riga, Latvia capturing bronze.

Santala was originally selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the ninth round, 245th overall in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that the Canucks have signed centre Brandon Reid. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Reid, 25, played the 2005-06 season with Swiss club Rapperswil-Jona tallying 16 goals, 18 assists (16-18-34) and 16 penalty minutes through 44 games played. Through 10 career NHL games with the Canucks, Reid has recorded six points (2-4-6). Reid made nine post season appearances with Vancouver during the 2002-03 Playoffs recording one assist.

The 5-foot-9, 190 lbs., native of Kirkland, Quebec was Vancouver’s fifth choice, 208th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

Canucks Sign Free Agent Centre Brad Moran

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that the Canucks have signed free agent centre Brad Moran. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Moran, 27, played the 2005-06 season with Swiss club Langnau recording eight points (4-4-8) and 18 penalty minutes in 18 games played. In five career NHL games with the Columbus Blue Jackets Moran has one goal, one assist and two penalty minutes.

Moran was named team MVP of the Syracuse Crunch in 2004-05 after finishing first in regular season scoring with 72 points (26-46-72).

The 6-foot, 190 lbs., native of Abbotsford, British Columbia was originally drafted in the seventh round, 191st overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that Alain Vigneault has been named Head Coach of the Vancouver Canucks.

"We are excited to be making this announcement today," said Dave Nonis. "Alain has enjoyed success at many levels and has proven that he can thrive in a great hockey market like Vancouver. His familiarity with the players and our organization will undoubtedly be an asset as we build towards the future."

Vigneault, 45, becomes the 16th Head Coach in club history with the announcement made today. He previously served in the NHL as Head Coach of the Montreal Canadiens from 1997-2001, becoming the organization’s second youngest coach in club history at the age of 36. Vigneault has compiled an NHL record of 109-118-35-4, reaching the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals during his first season behind the Canadiens bench and was nominated for the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year, following the 1999-2000 season.

Vigneault joins Vancouver from the club’s AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose, where he led the team to within one game of the conference finals. In the 2005-06 season, his first season with the Moose, Vigneault guided the club to a 44-24-7 record.

Prior to joining the Moose, Vigneault spent 13 seasons as Head Coach in the QMJHL with Trois-Rivieres, Hull, Beauport and PEI. In 1988, Vigneault led the Olympiques into the Memorial Cup and was subsequently named CHL Coach of the Year. He has also been honoured as coach of the QMJHL’s Second All-Star team on three separate occasions.

Vigneault has also achieved success on the international stage. He served as an Assistant Coach with Canada’s National Junior Team in 1989 and 1991, winning a gold medal at the 1991 World Junior Championships in Saskatoon.

The Gatineau, Quebec-native began his career in the NHL playing for the St. Louis Blues from 1981 to 1983. Drafted by the Blues in the eighth round, 167th overall in the 1981 Draft, the defenceman recorded two goals, five assists and 82 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Vigneault went on to serve as a scout for the Blues for two seasons and as an Assistant Coach for the Ottawa Senators from 1992 to 1996.

"We believe that in Roberto we are getting a player who has represented his country at the highest level, has been nominated for the Vezina Trophy and has proven that he is among the elite goaltenders in the world. Lukas is a young, skilled, puck-moving defenceman who has a very bright future in this League. I would like to thank Todd, Bryan and Alex for their contributions to our hockey club over the years and wish them and their families the best of luck in the future."

Luongo, 27, played 75 games with the Florida Panthers in the 2005-06 season posting a record of 35-30-9 with a 2.97 GAA and a save percentage of .914. Over his five-year NHL career, Luongo has played a total of 341 games, posting a record of 115-168-41, a 2.72 GAA and a save percentage of .919.

On the international stage, Luongo has represented Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympics, the 2005, 2004 and 2003 World Championships, helped Team Canada capture the 2004 World Cup and won gold at the 2003 World Championships. In the 2003-04 season the backstop was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award in addition to participating in the NHL All-Star Game and being named to the 2004 NHL Second All-Star Team. Luongo set new NHL records during the 2003-04 season in saves (2,303) and shots against (2,475) with Florida.

The 6’3”, 205 lbs, native of Montreal, Quebec was originally drafted by the New York Islanders fourth overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. Luongo has played five seasons with the Florida Panthers and one season with the New York Islanders.

Krajicek, 23, is a former first round pick and has played 67 games with Florida in the 2005-06 season recording 16 points (2-14-16) and 50 penalty minutes. In three seasons with the Panthers, Krajicek has played a total of 90 games, tallied 23 points (3-20-23) and 62 penalty minutes.

The 6’2”, 200 lbs, native of Prostejov, Czech Republic was Florida’s 24th selection overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Krajicek recently represented Czech Republic in the 2006 World Championships winning silver.

Luongo signs 4-year deal with Canucks

Goaltender Roberto Luongo finally has the long-term deal he's always wanted, signing a four-year, $27 million US contract with the Vancouver Canucks.

According to CKNW Radio in Vancouver, the new deal will pay Luongo $6 million US in the first year, $6.5 million US in the second year, $7 million US in the third year, and $7.5 million US in the final year. The contract also contains a no-trade clause for the final three years.

"We are pleased to have agreed to a long-term deal with Roberto today," Vancouver GM Dave Nonis said in a release.

"Roberto has proven himself to be an elite goaltender. His international experience, Vezina Trophy nomination and ability to consistently play at the highest level are tremendous assets that we believe will make the Vancouver Canucks competitive each and every night."

The Canucks and Florida Panthers completed a multi-player trade involving Luongo last week, with Vancouver sending Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan Allen and Alexander Auld to Florida for Luongo, Lukas Krajicek and a 2006 sixth round pick.

The Canucks qualified Luongo at $3.2 million US earlier this week, which gave the club his rights for the 2006-07 season, but Luongo's agent Gilles Lupien also met with his client in Montreal this week to discuss the prospects of a long term deal.

Free agent left winger Brendan Shanahan signed a one-year deal with the New York Rangers worth a reported $4 million on Sunday, leaving the Detroit Red Wings with whom he won three Stanley Cups.

A seven-times all-star and one of the NHL's premiere power forwards, Shanahan had 40 goals and 81 points for the Red Wings last season and ranks first among all active NHL players in goals with 598.

"We are thrilled to welcome Brendan and his family to the Rangers," Rangers general manager Glen Sather said on the team's web site. "He continues to perform at an elite level and also brings outstanding leadership qualities to our organization.

"Brendan will be a tremendous player and person for our young players to learn from."

Just one of 10 players to score at least 30 goals in 12 seasons, the 37-year-old Shanahan will be expected to take some of the scoring responsibility away from Jaromir Jagr.

A veteran of 18 NHL seasons with the New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers and Detroit Red Wings, Shanahan has amassed 598 goals and 634 assists for 1,232 points, along with 2,378 penalty minutes.

Some time early next season the rugged forward is likely to become just the 15th player in NHL history to score 600 goals.

Shanahan has also been a fixture on Team Canada, helping the country to gold at the 2002 Winter Olympics, becoming just the third player in NHL history to win an Olympic gold and Stanley Cup in the same year.

The loss of Shanahan is another blow to the Red Wings after future Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman announced his retirement last week.
