Bucchi in Napoli switch

Napoli have made their first signing since securing promotion to Serie B, swooping for current Second Division top scorer Christian Bucchi.

Bucchi has been in prolific form this season, netting 25 goals for Modena and catching the eye of Benfica and several Serie A clubs.

However, the 28-year-old has decided not to wait for a top-flight side, instead opting for a move to the Stadio San Paolo.

“This signing could be a turning point in my career,” explained the Canarini hitman. “Napoli are a club that should be in Serie A.”

He also spoke of his excitement at linking up with Emanuele Calaio’, the current Serie C1B Capocannoniere who has fired 18 goals for the Azzurri this term.

“We’re going to be the dream strike partnership for Napoli,” enthused Bucchi, “We played together at Terni and we got on well.”

Promotion this season is the first step on the road back to greatness for Napoli. The Vesuviani were Scudetto winners as recently as 1990, but were sent down to Serie C in 2004 after bankruptcy.

Now they look likely to invest heavily in the summer and start next season amongst the favourites for promotion.

Bucchi’s record suggests that he is the man for this job. His 19 goals last season – including two crucial play-off strikes – played a large part in Ascoli’s unexpected ascent to Serie A.

Banners banned in stadiums?

FIGC President Franco Carraro has announced plans to ban the use of fan-made banners in Serie A stadiums.

“Banners often contain insults and vulgar allegations. I sometimes ask myself if they are worth the bother,” noted the FA chief.

The ‘striscioni’ have long been a key part of the Italian football experience, with books published containing the best examples and even a prize awarded each year for the wittiest message from the supporters.

However, they have also been used in recent years to represent the worst excesses of the new hooligan movement, from anti-Semitic, racist and politically charged statements to threats of violence against players.

“The other evening there were 100,000 people inside the Nou Camp and not a single banner,” continued the FIGC President.

“I’m not saying they are always negative, as in fact they represent the passion of the fans in Italy, but they can also have unfortunate repercussions. They are banned in Spain and I think we should reflect on the situation here.”

The Italian authorities have taken various steps this season to stamp out an increase in football-related violence, including having tickets with the fan’s name printed on it and refusal of entry into a stadium without photo ID.

Marcello Lippi’s Azzurri squad includes Pippo Inzaghi, Francesco Tavano, Alessandro Gamberini, Mauro Esposito, Franco Semioli, Cristiano Lucarelli, Fabio Liverani and Marco Marchionni.

The Coach called the informal get-together at the Borghesiana training ground in Rome to evaluate other options for the World Cup.

As the Coppa Italia Final is next week, Inter and Roma players have been left out of this meeting on May 2 and 3.

Milan striker Inzaghi returns to the Azzurri fold for the first time in two years, while Marchionni of Parma hadn’t appeared since November 2003.

Cagliari wide man Esposito has five caps under his belt, but had fallen out of favour following his club’s struggles this season.

Livorno striker Lucarelli has only ever played in a summer tour of the US in 2005, despite netting 43 goals over the last two campaigns.

Liverani's impressive form for Lazio this season has earned him his first international call since a 1-0 win over Morocco in September 2001.

These are debut calls for Gamberini of Fiorentina, Chievo midfielder Semioli and Empoli hitman Tavano.

There will be no friendly match during this spell, only games between ranks and discussion over tactics. Lippi must hand in the final World Cup list on May 15.
