De jaren '80 bieden wat nakomertjes van grootheden als Kurosawa, Bergman, Lean, Kubrick en Leone. Wel de doorbraak van Tornatore en Kieslowski, da's wel oké. Hier en daar nog een Russisch pareltje, en verder veel incidenteel succes. Al met al erg weinig voor een heel decennium.

Ran (1985) is z'n laatste grote werk, staat ook in de IMDB Top 250. Het heeft lang geduurd voor 'ie kleur ging gebruiken, maar toen 'ie eenmaal overstag was ging 'ie helemaal los. En wat dat kitscherig betreft: ga maar eens kijken, het is prachtig! Yume (1990) is overigens wél kitscherig, maar misschien juist daarom heel mooi.
