Dit persoon weet e.e.a. wel aardig onder woorden te brengen:
quote:
Dont go unless you know what your doing!!
Pros:
A city alive with juju and afrobeat music. This city is RAW Africa.
Cons:
HUGE, dangerous, overcrowded, dirty, depressing, electricity and water is never guaranteed, little infrastructure, unstable.
Bottom line:
Seeing Lagos will change the way you view the world. I dont recommend anyone go for reasons other than business. Be wise, and you'll return with some incredible stories.
Full review:
As an American expat I lived in Lagos for 7 months in 2000-2001. Lagos is the largest city in Africa (some guess upwards of 14 million) and one of the largest in the world. It is also one of the most densely populated cities in the world. It is NOT a tourist destination. Those who are seeking an African experience are wiser to choose Ghana, an eastern African country, or a country in southern Africa.
There is little European influence in Lagos, which is evident in its complete lack of infrastructure. This is the largest city in the most corrupt nation in the world. You always have to be aware. Driving in Lagos can be intimidating. Roads are poor, and undermarked. Drivers pull crazy stunts frequently. Accidents in Lagos and all of Nigeria are frequent and often fatal.
Mainland Lagos is very dangerous at night, although you should feel safe staying at the Sheraton by Murtala Muhammed Intl. Ikoyi and Victoria Island are the "upscale" areas of Lagos (45-60 min from MMIA). Although they have been improving a lot over the last few years, they still are chaotic and can be intimidating at first.
Good places to eat include The Brass Lamp (Good American Fare on VI), The Cactus (VI), the Chinese restaurant at the top of MegaPlaza (VI), Planet 44 (Lebanese version of Planet Hollywood, on VI), American GQ (must be member or on Embassy business, Ikoyi), and the new Italian restaurant off Festival Road, VI (this one is supprisingly good, and the atmosphere is nice by any standards).
Shopping on VI or Ikoyi is best at Goodies or Park'N'Shop. For Hotels, the Meridia Ekko Hotel on VI is most recomended. Ive never stayed there, but had a chance to visit and it looked like it was being rennovated. Outside the hotel is a nice (calm) market where you can find a lot of the same things as at Lekki (Illisant) market without all the hastle.
Beaches in Lagos are NOT recommended (especially Bar Beach). However, up the Lekki Peninsula towards Chevron, there are several nice beaches with bath-warm water. Most people come to Lagos on business, not pleasure.
Be wise, and you'll get in and out okay. Know that everyone wants something from you. Carry your OWN bags at the airport. If someone picks it up and carries it even just a few feet, they will expect some sort of "dash" (tip) from you. Realize when dashing that even though 100 Naira notes arent a lot to us(less than 1 dollar), they are huge to most Nigerians.
Make sure to ask people before taking their pictures. They might want a small dash. but its worth it. If you take their picture without asking, you might have a little touble.
Dont be intimidated if it seems everyone is always yelling. Thats just the way the Yoruba talk. Go with eyes wide opened and you'll see amazing things that will change the way you view the world. Travel durring the day, and do not use public transportation.
