Mirah (pronounced mear-rah) -- full name Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn -- was born on her mother's kitchen table. The daughter of artistic parents, the singer/songwriter had a passion for music from early childhood. While fronting the jazz band the Hot Set in Olympia, WA, playing wedding parties and bar mitzvahs to earn extra cash, Mirah began writing her own brand of lo-fi, slice-of-life indie pop, a style later compared to that of grrrl-rocker Liz Phair. She later toured with the band across North America and Canada. Mirah's first full-length solo album, You Think It's Like This but Really It's Like This, was released in June 2000, under K. Elvrum produced the freshman record, assisting with much of the instrumentation. Yo Yo Recordings released her single-sided album Storageland in 2001. In 2002, Mirah returned to K with the breathtaking Advisory Committee and, with collaborator Ginger Brooks Takahashi, released Songs from the Black Mountain Music Project in summer 2003. 2004 was also busy for Mirah: To All We Stretch the Open Arm (which also featured the Black Cat Orchestra) and C'mon Miracle both arrived that year.

Een opvallend, haast "schattig" stemgeluid, gemengd met de dwarsheid van Phil Elvrum achter de productieknoppen - een meer dan geslaagde combinatie voor muziekliefhebbers die hun singer/songwriters met iets meer muzikale diepgang willen hebben dan gewoon de vaste kale piano/akoestische gitaar-begeleiding. Voor degenen die bekend zijn met The Microphones is het muzikaal eigenlijk een wat toegankelijkere afgeleide ervan, een absolute aanrader in elk geval.

Het enige wat ik kon vinden was een topic over twee artiesten, waarvan Mirah er eentje was. Vandaar maar gewoon een nieuw topic.

En tja, het wordt tijd dat ze met wat nieuw werk komt. Met de huidige, zeer wisselvallige output van Mount Eerie zijn Mirahs albums toch de beste plek voor Phil Elvrum-audiofielen, en ik zet C'Mon Miracle en Advisory Committee toch nog best regelmatig op. Nog altijd prima platen, in elk geval.

Heb haar een aantal jaar geleden in de OCCII gezien. Ze stond geprogrammeerd tussen twee hardcore bands en mede daardoor liep het optreden niet bepaald vlekkeloos. Zelden iemand zo hulpeloos op het podium zien staan. Totaal misplaatst.

Ik moet ook eerlijk bekennen dat ik haar de laatste jaren ook niet meer heb gevolgd en dus die laatste paar platen ook niet ken. Mis ik iets?

Die twee samenwerkingsprojecten kun je op zich wel laten zitten, zijn meer leuk voor de liefhebber dan echt interessant. C'Mon Miracle is weer wel een prima plaat, zul je je geen buil aan vallen denk ik.

Ik ga die nieuwste plaat ook maar eens beluisteren. Persoonlijk vind ik haar het best te behappen als ze met Phil Elvrum samen werkt, dat geeft haar muziek net wat meer diepgang.

Nieuwe cd is gelekt. De titel is '(a)spera', en op het eerste gehoor klinkt het weer bijzonder fraai.

Mirah lives in Portland, Oregon, where she works as a songwriter, performer and producer. Again teaming up with Phil Elverum (The Microphones, Mt. Eerie) for three of the 10 tracks, she also enlisted the engineering prowess of fellow Portlanders Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, Laura Veirs) and Adam Selzer (Norfolk and Western, M. Ward) to complete this beautiful voyage. Featured musicians include Chris Funk (of The Decemberists), Tara Jane O’Neil and Lori Goldston.

The album holds many surprises within its undulating reverie. String sections shimmer in the opening track “Generosity” and in the impeccable “Education,” a relentless fist pounds against a soundboard in the darkly powerful “The World Is Falling Apart.” “Shells” offers a breathtaking vantage of Kane Mathis¹ masterful playing of the mandinka kora, a street party emerges in full swing from the galaxy of Mirah¹s heart in “The Country of the Future,” unexpected turns are taken in “The Forest,” horns burst forth as quickly as they retreat back into the starscape on “The River.” Kalimba, hurdy gurdy, bongos, horns, instruments for all worlds, all times.
