Drinken met de Tsjechische schilder/graficus Tavik Frantisek Simon (1877-1942)

Onderstaande werken zijn gemaakt tijdens zijn Parijse periode (1904-1914). Buiten die Parijse periode heb ik geen drank-gerelateerde werken in zijn oeuvre kunnen ontdekken.
Ook in Picasso's oeuvre zijn de drank-gerelateerde werken geconcentreerd in een korte periode, de periode van 1900 tot 1908 (zijn blauwe en roze periode).
Is hier sprake van een tijdverschijnsel, van een 'modetrend' binnen het schildersgilde?

"De koning drinkt!" is de uitroep van de 'nar' zodra de 'koning' het glas aan de lippen zet. Deze uitroep is het startsein voor het zuipfestijn van driekoningendag (6 januari). Driekoningendag is tegenwoordig een christelijk feestdag, maar dit feest is bijna even oud als de menselijke beschaving. Voor onze verre voorouders, nog getooid in berenhuiden, was de midwinter het dieptepunt van het jaar en het tweeweekse midwinterfeest zorgde voor de broodnodige compensatie. Het slotaccoord van het midwinterfeest (6 januari dus) was een tomeloos zuipfestijn.

De Hollandse en Vlaamse meesters hebben dit oerse festijn weer op de kaart gezet. Met name de Leijenaar Jan Steen (ca. vijftien schilderijen) en de Antwerper Jacob Jordaens (minstens vijf schilderijen) voerden de schildersgilden aan. Helaas heb ik van Jan Steen slechts drie schilderijen kunnen traceren.

... Jordaens also produced genre paintings. "The Feast of the Bean King belongs to the tradition, popular in Flanders since Bruegel, of busy scenes of taverns, fairs and overindulgent festivities. This is Jordaens fourth fifth and last version of the subject.
While working on the picture, Jordaens enlarged the painting, originally conceived as a much smaller work (a practice also employed by Rubens), developing it into a rich, sweeping depiction of a custom associated with Twelfth Night. A cake was served containing a single bean, and the guest who found the bean in his slice became the king of the feast. He chose the prettiest woman as his queen and appointed the others present as his courtiers; here small scraps of paper indicate their offices.
Jordaens treatment of the boisterous celebration overflows with sumptuous luxuriance. Noisy and drunken, old and young, men and women alike are crushed against each other in a wealth of movement that threatens to spill over beyond the frame of the picture. The immoderate and dissolute behaviour and the close, murky atmosphere convey chaos and disorder, yet this is belied by the balanced, almost symmetrical composition. The soft light flooding in through the window not only imbues the scene with a sense of human warmth and intimacy but also disposes the raucous company into groups. Above them hangs a moralising Latin proverb: "None resembles the fool more than the drunkard.

In de web-catalogus van het Mauritshuis vind ik:
1. Nemo loquebatur (Niemand sprak er)
2. Erat sermo inter fratres (De vrienden raakten in gesprek)
3. Loquebantur omnes (Iedereen voerde het woord)
4. Rumor erat in casa (Het werd rumoerig in huis)

Maar het vijfde schilderij ontbreekt in de catalogus! Is het te onkies voor publicatie?

On the other side of the boulevard, the Cafe du Helder is the rendezvous of military and naval officers, who on their brief visits to Paris are sure to find some friend there with whom to discuss the latest promotions and the newest reforms invented by their hierarchic chief, the Minister of War, and in case of need they can appeal for information to the habitués who are not all army men, but who have a particular affection for all that is military, and who sit at the little marble tables, drink absinthe, and are invariably decorated.

One may be a retired captain with a rubicund nose, long shaggy mustaches, a goatee beard, and in his button-hole the rosette of the Legion of Honor, won perhaps by good service in Africa. With his hands in his pockets, he sits heavily on the red velvet divan, propping his gross body against the back, and never removing his rather rakish hat from his denuded skull. Another may be a horse-dealer or an army contractor, whose sympathies and interests make him prefer to drink his green poison in a military café. A third, corpulent, apoplectic, faded, and sulky, smokes stolidly, with a cross expression on his countenance, his temper having been irremediably soured by long years of sedentary ennui in the bureaux of the War Department.
