Quito.– Central Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano is maintaining a "high level" of seismic activity, with repeated explosions, Geophysics Institute spokesman Andres Ruiz said Monday.

The blasts can be heard within a radius of 20 kilometers (some 12 miles) of the volcano, Ruiz said.

The Geophysics Institute spokesman told Ecuavisa television that the volcano was emitting plumes loaded mostly with water vapor, volcanic gases and low concentrations of ash.

A "moderate to large" explosion occurred early Monday and was heard by residents of several nearby communities, Ruiz said.

mooie foto er komt nog lava uit, maar een echte uitbarsting is er niet geweest dus.

OLVESTON, Montserrat -- A dome that had been growing atop the volcano on this Caribbean island collapsed Saturday, sending debris cascading down the mountain and raining ash over a wide area, scientists said. No injuries were reported.

Een krachtige aardbeving in Centraal-Indonesië heeft zaterdagochtend aan tenminste 1325 mensen het leven gekost. Drieduizend mensen raakten gewond, meldt het Rode Kruis. Gebouwen zijn ingestort en dokters smeken om hulp, zeggen overheidsfunctionarissen.

De beving, die rond middernacht plaatsvond, had een kracht van 6.2 op de schaal van Richter en heeft de activiteit van de Merapi-vulkaan verhoogd, die al weken hete as, gas en lava uitspuugt. Het epicentrum ligt op ongeveer 25 kilometer ten zuidwesten van Yogyakarta, vlakbij het Borobudur-complex. Tenminste drie dorpen in de buurt zijn beschadigd.

De Indonesische president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono heeft het leger bevolen de slachtoffers te evacueren. Bewoners van het getroffen gebied rennen in paniek door de straten. Acht uur na de beving liggen minstens 443 lijken in negen ziekenhuizen in de regio. Meer doden en gewonden worden binnengedragen, melden het Indonesische Rode Kruis en ziekenhuismedewerkers

Yep, de aardbeving hebben we gehad. Alleen was die wel minder sterk dan de 7.8 in 1990. Maar het kan heel goed voor het laatste zetje zorgen of hebben gezorgd.

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia — Villagers living on Mount Merapi's slopes watched as it spit out searing clouds of smoke and lava Monday amid warnings a large eruption was still possible in the aftermath of Indonesia's powerful earthquake.

Activity the volcano has increased since Saturday's earthquake, with hot clouds spewed out an average of 150 times a day, compared with 50 times before, said Subandriyo, chief of the Merapi volcanology and monitoring office.

The rumbling volcano expelled lava and hot clouds Monday morning, sending debris tumbling 2 1/2 miles down the mountain, he said.

"The earthquake has caused instability in the lava dome," said Subandriyo, who like many Indonesians uses only one name. "There is still a chance that a big eruption might occur."

Mount Merapi, which means "Fire Mountain," is one of the world's most active volcanos and has erupted scores of times in the last 200 years, often with deadly results.

The 9,800-foot volcano has been rumbling and spewing smoke and lava for weeks. Residents in the danger zone were ordered to evacuate earlier this month, but scores have remained, and say its latest activity has done little to change their minds.

BANTUL, Indonesia (AP) -- Fresh spurts of lava from a nearby volcano, a strong aftershock and worries about the spread of bird flu are adding to the strain for hundreds of thousands of survivors of Indonesia's devastating earthquake.

Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanos, spewed lava and hot clouds of gas and ash scores of times on Saturday, exactly a week after the magnitude 6.3 quake shook Java island, said Subandriyo, a government scientist. Like many Indonesians, he uses one name.

Merapi's lava dome has swelled in the past week to 330 feet, raising fears that it could collapse, he said. That could release a highly dangerous pyroclastic flow -- a fast-moving burst of high-temperature gases and rock fragments -- burning anything in its path, the government volcanology center said.

Worried villagers in recent days have performed rituals aimed at warding off an eruption. On Thursday, the mountain's royally appointed spiritual guardian, "Mbah" Maridjan, led a silent procession of 100 people three times around a village near the volcano.

Scientists say the quake may have contributed to a weakening of the lava dome.

erg lijkt me dat, als je het ziet aankomen en je kan nergens naar toe .. dat dan afgezien van de vraag of het uberhaupt wel nut heeft om ergens anders naar toe te gaan

zoals het daar nu aan het borrelen is aan alle kanten .. waar moet je naar toe dat je voor een tijdje veilig bent ?

en tja, ik ben geen seismoloog oid, heb er maar bijster weinig verstand van, maar als ik zo terug blader door oudere seismische gegevens dan begint hetgeen er nu gebeurt rond de ring toch wel buitensporige proporties aan te nemen .. je zou haast geloven dat de nieuwe breuklijn cq kantelen van het bolletje eraan komt

Vorige week kwamen er nog ruim 6000 mensen om door een aardbeving in hetzelfde gebied, tienduizenden huizen zijn tegen de vlakte gegaan. Er is in de buurt nu simpelweg geen plek meer. Opvangkampen voor 'vulkaanvluchtelingen' zitten nu vol met 'aardbevingvluchtelingen'. Erg triest natuurlijk.

De Merapi-vulkaan (net als de Krakatau naar het westen en Tambora naar het oosten) liggen op een noord-zuid scheur in aan de rand van de zuidelijke Euraziatische plaat. Ik zal eens kijken of ik het plaatje kan vinden waarop ik dat vorige week zag.
