Pompey end interest in Redknapp

Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric has revealed Harry Redknapp is no longer in the running to become the new manager Former Pompey boss Redknapp quit as manager of arch-rivals Southampton on Saturday and was heavily tipped to take back his old job at Fratton Park.

But Saints have refused Portsmouth's offer of compensation for Redknapp and Mandaric is now set to look elsewhere. A statement on the club's website said: "Pompey will step up their search with plans to interview more candidates."

Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe is thought to be holding out for £220,000 - the remainder of Redknapp's contract. Pompey have offered Saints £50,000 for Redknapp if he becomes their manager, plus a further £75,000 if the Premiership club avoid relegation.

"This is the first official written compensation offer and we've turned it down," said Saints chief Rupert Lowe. "Until we reach agreement Pompey do not have permission to speak to Harry, who is still in our employment." Redknapp, who says he has not quit as Southampton manager but will not return to the club, admitted that the impasse has left him in limbo.

Redknapp told BBC Sport: "I would love the opportunity to speak to Portsmouth."

Portsmouth chairman Mandaric is also keen to speak to Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez over their vacant managerial job. Sanchez has stated he would be happy to take on a club role alongside his Northern Ireland post. "We believe that Lawrie is someone who given proper support could be a success at our club," Mandaric told BBC Sport.

"For that reason we are going to ask permission from the IFA to contact Lawrie and see what his views are." The IFA have said that if Portsmouth ask for permission to talk to Sanchez, it will be granted. Redknapp walked out of his job at St Mary's last week after he was refused permission to speak to Pompey about their manager's post, which has been vacant since Alain Perrin was sacked on 24 November.

Redknapp insists he will walk away from football if he cannot become Portsmouth manager again. He has also revealed he regrets his decision to move to Saints. He told the Sunday Mirror: "The last year has been the worst of my life and that is no exaggeration. "I made a monumental mistake walking out of Fratton Park and a day hasn't passed since I left the ground for the last time that I didn't regret my decision.

"Events this season have simply increased my desire to get away and once Portsmouth asked permission to speak to me this week I knew I had to go back."

THE BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award is being hijacked by Liverpool fans voting for striker Peter Crouch - and he still hasn't scored for the club.

Crouch, who cost £7million from Southampton, was also booed by England fans during a recent friendly. Despite that, the 6ft 7in player is said to be second to the favourite, England cricket hero Freddie Flintoff.

Emails are flying around the internet urging loyal Crouch fans to give him the nod in the annual poll to find Britain's greatest sporting talent.

Previous winners have included rugby World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson, footballer David Beckham and athlete Daley Thompson. Runner Kelly Holmes won last year after her double gold medal triumph at the Athens Olympics.

Richard Pedder, spokesman for Liverpool Supporters Club, said: "This shows that all the fans at the club are behind Peter. These votes are obviously from people who want to speak out against everyone who's been getting on his back, giving him a hard time."

The BBC has vowed to erase duplicate voting, but a spokesman admitted there was nothing to stop each individual vote counting towards the final result.

Crouch award bid peters out

Peter Crouch may have scuppered his chances of a place on the Sports Personality of the Year podium after ending his goal drought for Liverpool.

The striker has been polling a large amount of votes for the annual BBC award, which is presented on Sunday, after a cruel internet crusade was launched by Everton fans keen to embarrass him on live television.

Some online chat rooms even suggested Crouch was lying in second place behind favourite Andrew Flintoff before his strike put the Reds 2-0 up against Wigan on Saturday.

That goal could see the wheels come off the campaign - which had also been backed by some Liverpool fans, sympathetic to their player's plight.

And if the Premiership's dubious goals panel rules Crouch also scored the first goal - controversially awarded to Wigan goalkeeper Mike Pollitt - the plot will be well and truly dead in the water.

After all, where's the fun in giving an award to the top flight's in-form striker?
