Bronx shooting (Newsday/ David Greene)

NEW YORK -- Just a dozen years ago, Lillo Brancato Jr. was going to be a star.
The unknown actor earned critical acclaim opposite his idol, Robert De Niro, in the 1993 movie "A Bronx Tale." He played the Oscar winner's son in the story of a teen torn between two role models _ a local mobster and his dad _ in a heavily Italian Bronx neighborhood.
From there, Brancato went on to appear in more than a dozen films, including "Renaissance Man," "Crimson Tide," "Enemy of the State" and "The Adventures of Pluto Nash." Brancato later enjoyed a recurring role on "The Sopranos," eventually getting executed by fictional mob boss Tony Soprano in one of the series' more memorable departures.
But on Saturday, the actor was far from the bright lights and red carpets of Hollywood fame. Instead, police said, he was breaking into the basement of a vacant Bronx house when a gunfight erupted and an off-duty city police officer was killed.
Brancato was just 16 when De Niro launched a search for non-professionals to appear in his 1993 directorial debut, the film version of Chazz Palminteri's play "A Bronx Tale." Brancato was discovered by a casting director strolling along the sands at Jones Beach; he came out of the water and wowed him with impressions of De Niro and Joe Pesci.
In a New York Times profile, he was described as "friendly, earnest, sweet-tempered, a fast talker, a salesman, the kind of goofy tough guy who once upon a time used to hang out on a city street corner." Brancato, 29, was raised in the Yonkers by adoptive parents, and he still resided in the city just north of the Bronx.
Brancato, born in Bogota, Colombia, was adopted when he was 4 months old. "I consider myself Italian," he once said. "I was raised to eat pasta."
In 1999-2000, he appeared in a half-dozen episodes of "The Sopranos" as a dim-witted aspiring mobster. In one episode, his character worked a high-stakes card game where the players included Frank Sinatra Jr.
Brancato also starred in the short-live TV mob show "Falcone," and guest-starred in a 2002 episode of "NYPD Blue."
His most recent appearance in the headlines came in June, when Brancato was arrested by Yonkers police after they discovered four glassine bags of heroin during a routine traffic stop.

An actor who appeared as an aspiring gangster in US TV series The Sopranos faces murder charges after a policeman was shot dead during a burglary.
Prosecutors say Lillo Brancato Jr, who played Matt Bevilacqua in the show's second series, will be charged following the raid in New York.
Mr Brancato Jr, 29, and Steven Armento, 48, also face burglary and weapons possession charges.
Both were taken to hospital after being shot by the officer during the raid.
The two men were said to be in a critical condition after being treated for gunshot wounds.
Acting break
Officer Daniel Enchautegui was off-duty when he disturbed a burglary in a property near his home on 10 December.
Police said the officer was shot in the chest but managed to shoot both suspects several times.
Colombian-born Mr Brancato got his acting break as a 16-year-old in the Robert De Niro-directed film A Bronx Tale in 1993.
He also appeared in films including Crimson Tide and Enemy of the State.
His character in The Sopranos, Matthew Bevilacqua, appeared in six episodes before he was killed by mob boss Tony Soprano.

NEW YORK (AP) _ An actor whose credits include a Robert De Niro movie and the "Sopranos" remained hospitalized Monday following a shooting in which an off-duty police officer was killed.
Lillo Brancato Jr., 29, and his alleged accomplice, Steven Armento, 48, both of Yonkers, were listed in fair condition at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.
The suspects were injured early Saturday while allegedly breaking into a Bronx apartment to steal prescription drugs.
Officer Daniel Enchautegui, 28, who lived next door, tried to intercept the burglary. Although wounded in the chest, he fired eight shots, hitting Armento six times and Brancato twice, police said.
The funeral will be Wednesday for Enchautegui, who worked in the South Bronx. He was the second city police officer killed in less than two weeks. Officer Dillon Stewart was shot to death on Nov. 28 during a car chase in Brooklyn.
"I just feel for that family," Stewart's wife, Leslyn, told the Post.
Enchautegui's sister, Yolanda Rosa, called the shooting their mother's "worst nightmare."
She told the Daily News that Maria Enchautegui never wanted her son to become a policeman. "I'm the only one left," said Rosa, 41, whose sister, Yvette, died of cancer in 1996.
Brancato got his acting break as a 16-year-old in the De Niro-directed film "A Bronx Tale" in 1993. De Niro issued a statement calling the shooting "deeply disturbing news, a tragedy beyond comprehension."
Brancato played mob wannabe Matt Bevilacqua in a half-dozen episodes of the 1999-2000 season of "The Sopranos." He also appeared in a dozen other films, including "Crimson Tide" and "Enemy of the State."
In 2001, Brancato played former U.S. Senate candidate Rick Lazio opposite former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in the "Inner Circle," a political spoof presented by the New York media and City Hall, the News reported Monday.
"At the time, obviously we had no idea he would be accused of such a horrendous crime," Giuliani spokeswoman Sunny Mindel said. "The city has lost a fine officer."
The Bronx district attorney planned to charge Armento with first- and second-degree murder and Brancato with second-degree murder, said spokesman Steven Reed said. Their arraignment was not immediately scheduled.
Armento is believed to have fired the fatal shot, authorities said.
Neighbors said that Brancato often fought with his on-and-off girlfriend, one of Armento's daughters.
Armento's ex-wife, Donna Nelson, said that Brancato wooed premed student Stefanie Armento by boasting of his movie role.
"He would tell her, 'I was in "A Bronx Tale,"' Nelson told the News. "I can show you what life is like."
Stefanie Armento broke off with Brancato after six months because of his alleged drug use, Nelson said. Her daughter changed her cell phone number three times because of his persistence, she said.
Brancato had been arrested in June for heroin possession and again just two days before the Bronx shooting, after one of Armento's daughters called in a harassment complaint, Yonkers police said. He was charged with disorderly conduct.
Brancato's mother, Domenica, told the News the he is a "wonderful, generous and gentle son. He's a good boy."
