Joel Manners - Producer (PSP™)
Need for Speed™ Most Wanted is sure to be the hottest game when it releases this November 17th filled with police chases, car crashes, hot cars and a true sense of speed.
To get the behind-the-scenes scoop on the development of the game, the Need for Speed Community Team (CT) met with PSP™ Producer Joel Manners to learn more on his role on the development team and why Need for Speed™ Most Wanted 5-1-0 is a must have game for this system.
Community Team: What can you tell us about your background as well as what brought you to the development team for Need for Speed Most Wanted 5-1-0?
Joel Manners: I've been with EA's Fusion team, which specializes in PSP development, since the launch titles, but I have been in games development for a while now, going back to the days of Privateer and Wing Commander when I was a designer at Origin.
CT: Need for Speed™ Underground Rivals was a fresh start for the PSP system, how is Need for Speed Most Wanted 5-1-0 different from Rivals?
JM: It's very different. Working on a launch title for a new platform is quite challenging as you develop new technology and new ideas long before the actual hardware exists. You spend as much time dealing with those challenges as you do actually working on the game itself.
With Most Wanted 5-1-0 we were in the great position of starting with a cool existing game in Rivals, and being able to spend our time building from there, creating a cool new game with even better technology supporting it, such as internet multiplayer. It really released us to concentrate on new gameplay and new ideas.
CT: How does Need for Speed Most Wanted 5-1-0 differ from its big brother, Need for Speed Most Wanted?
JM: Some things are similar … the focus of NFS Most Wanted 5-1-0 is still the experience of street racing and car modding, building up your reputation as a king of the streets while avoiding the police.
However, we also wanted to make sure that 5-1-0 gives the player a different game, so we created new and unique things for him to enjoy. We have new cars, a bunch of unique customizations, all new tracks to race on, and even new game modes to play, including the ability to drive as the police in pursuit of the racers.
CT: While we're on the subject, why the 5-1-0 moniker? What exactly does that mean?
JM: 5-1-0 is the police code for illegal street racing in progress, so it seemed very appropriate for us. The addition of the police to the races really changes the tenor of the experience. Now it's not just about beating your rivals, you have to also get away from the cops at the same time!
CT: Can you expand more on the Tuner Takedown mode that's included in Need for Speed Most Wanted 5-1-0?
JM: Sure thing. Tuner Takedown is a cool new game mode that allows the player to drive as the cops, searching for street racers and trying to bust them. IF you are successful you can move on to other races and go after bigger fish, and your rewards include brand new police vehicles that you can drive, including massive SUVs and maxed-out muscle car interceptors.
CT: While we're on the subject of vehicles, are there any exclusive cars included in Need for Speed Most Wanted 5-1-0 that aren't in other versions of the game?
JM: Absolutely. We've included two new exclusive cars for 5-1-0, including the Porsche 4s. The rest of the car selection is a great mix of different car types, including street tuners, exotics, and muscle cars from all over the world.
CT: How does the world in Need for Speed Most Wanted 5-1-0 differ as well? Does it take place in a small section of the city of Rockport or another city setting altogether?
JM: 5-1-0 takes place in Rockport just like the other versions of the game, but features exclusive tracks to compete on. Our art team created areas all over the city, including downtown areas with tons of sharp corners and heavy traffic, warehouse districts with lots of hidden paths and construction, and outskirt areas with wide expressways and even country roads.
CT: Thanks for your time, Joel. One last pop quiz for you - if you could describe Need for Speed Most Wanted 5-1-0 in one sentence, what would you say?
JM: Super-fast street racing, fantastic car customization, and intense cop chases that you can play anywhere!
CT: And that's the bottom line!
