quote:I recently sent an email to a editor at PlanetGamecube with the name Michael. He had the final version of the game, I asked him if all tracks were playable online and here is his response:
"Sorry for not responding earlier...some of my emails have
mysteriously disappeared from my PC, so I had to dig around my
webmail.
"Yes, after connecting at home I can confirm only 20 of the 32 tracks
are online-capable. It isn't really a surprise: it's clear the MK
team had trouble dealing with (perhaps synching) many moving objects
in online mode: there is no Battle Mode, items cannot be dragged, and
the tracks MIA when online involve things like traffic and giant
pinballs.
A shame, since those are some of the best tracks, but 20 tracks isn't
such a "small number." Double Dash and MK64 each only had 16 tracks.
There are many good online tracks, don't worry."
My mail will appear in their mailbag soon.
I hope this isnt true since the official MKDS site states that all tracks are playable online.

quote:Online play - sup?
-4 player races are all that's available for online play. No battle mode, no 8P races.
-Not all courses are available. Basically ones with moving parts (traffic, etc) aren't available. 20+ are, however.
-No dragging items.
-All characters and karts selectable, although many will have to be unlocked through 1P
-MOST IMPORTANTLY, online play is still a hell of a lot of fun. Do you know how tempting it is to have my DS bedside, now? I know that within seconds I can be up and racing possibily Konno himself. Just one quick online GP before bed... yeah right. Everyone already knows that 8P local wireless is where Mario Kart is at... it's the most fun I've had gaming in a long time. Online play provides added value, not primary value.

The problem with Mario Kart is that the online portion is extremely limited. The only way you'll be able to connect with me on a regular basis, outside of randomly connecting to me via "Worldwide Mode" is if you have my 12 digit Friend Code, and I have yours. If you have mine, you still won't be able to connect to me as a friend since I don't have yours. Knowing someone's online name isn't enough. Nintendo's system also forces the group of up to four players -- people can't choose who to play, or even enable a simple two or three player challenge. And even in random Worldwide match-ups, if I enjoyed racing against someone, I have no way of adding that person to my list of friends. There's no way of chatting with that person or finding out his email address to get that information after the fact, either.
Get Mario Kart DS because it's the best freakin' kart racer ever, with an incredible focus on single player and local multiplayer. Don't get it solely for its online component because you'll end up wanting way more than what's offered here.
