‘Spitting’ Samuel handed ban

Inter’s Walter Samuel has been suspended for three matches after spitting at Pavel Nedved of Juventus.

The Italian football authorities have handed Samuel the ban, after TV evidence from Saturday’s Italian Super Cup match was evaluated.

Footage shows the Argentine, who only arrived from Real Madrid in the summer, spit at the Czech ace in Inter’s 1-0 win.

The former Roma central defender is now set to miss the Serie A matches against Treviso, Palermo and Lecce.

Inter are likely to appeal against the punishment, especially as the player himself has pleaded his innocence.

"I may have spat but it wasn’t targeted at Nedved, it was aimed at the ground," stated the South American.

Nedved himself said: "I’ve been told of what happened but I didn’t realise anything at the time."

Juve agree Cassano move - Report

Roma’s fans made it clear Antonio Cassano’s days at the club are numbered and it’s reported Juve reached an agreement for the player today.

There are claims that Bianconeri director general Luciano Moggi met with his opposite number Daniele Prade’ in Rome this morning and agreed to exchange Cassano for Adrian Mutu, Giorgio Chiellini and a cash sum. It’s suggested that an official announcement will be made on Friday.

The former Bari starlet has rejected terms for a contract extension with the Olimpico outfit and his current deal expires at the end of the season.

To prevent him leaving on a free transfer, the Giallorossi hope to sell him off now and at least make back £13m of the £20m they paid for him in 2001.

Roma have threatened to leave Cassano on the bench for the entire campaign if he doesn’t “confirm his status as a member of the squad by signing a new contract,” but the final straw came last night.

During the team presentation at the Stadio Olimpico, Cassano was roundly insulted by the crowd and only came on for the second half in the 2-0 friendly victory over Arab side Al Ain, with goals from Vincenzo Montella and Rodrigo Taddei.

The fans also hurled abuse at the Italian international when he attended teammate Francesco Totti’s wedding earlier this summer and the rapport with the notoriously fiery Roma

Six matches off in Serie B

Week 1 of the Serie B schedule has been thrown into chaos after six games were postponed in a row over kick-off times.

The Italian Football authorities have switched the majority of this season’s Second Division matches to Saturday afternoons.

However, that has been met with widespread condemnation by local council authorities who have refused to hand over stadia – which they own – at 15.00 hours local time.

As a result, Albinoleffe-Rimini, Arezzo-Crotone, Brescia-Cremonese, Cesena-Atalanta, Modena-Mantova and Piacenza-Catania have all been postponed.

Italian Fooball League chief, Adriano Galliani, has confirmed that their lawyers are now assessing their options.

"We have understood that we just can’t play football on a Saturday afternoon in Italy," explained Galliani.

"But I would like to remind the mayors of Bergamo and Brescia that they never complained when their teams played on a Saturday in Serie A last season."

The League authorities are under pressure to switch kick-off times but Galliani has warned he won’t throw in the towel.

"I don’t know what will happen but at this point we will simply postpone games from Saturday to Saturday," he added.

"None of us thought this would happen. After all, these games are not attracting a mass number of fans.

"Last season, Albinoleffe’s average attendance was 1,133 and Arezzo’s was just 5,345."

Pescara’s Week 1 match against Torino was already postponed because of Toro’s difficulties in forming a new club.

ROME (ANP) - Het voetbalseizoen in Italiė begint in totale chaos. Zes duels in de tweede liga, de Serie B, kunnen zaterdag niet doorgaan. De burgemeesters van de speelsteden hebben de duels verboden en de stadions afgesloten. Zij kunnen de veiligheid in en rond de stadions niet garanderen.

Voorzitter Galliani van de voetballiga reageerde woedend. ,,Het is ongehoord dat enkele burgemeesters de Serie B zo in de weg zitten. Zij kunnen een schadeclaim verwachten'', zei hij. De clubs lopen door de afgelasting belangrijke televisie-inkomsten mis. ,,Daar stel ik de burgemeesters voor verantwoordelijk'', aldus Galliani.

De burgemeesters van Albinoleffe, Arezzo, Brescia, Cesena, Modena en Piacenza verzetten zich tegen voetbalwedstrijden op zaterdag, omdat het dan veel te druk is hun steden met andere activiteiten en evenementen. In hun ogen is zondag de beste voetbaldag.

Roberto Mancini heeft voorgesteld de 3 thuiswedstrijden in de CL poule, tegen Artmedia, Porto en de Glasgow Rangers, buiten de deur te spelen (buiten Italie) en de opbrengst qua kaartverkoop aan een goed doel te schenken.
